Thanks for the info!
I live in Los Angeles.
I got one of those $25 dollar Chinese knock offs at the beginning to test a dashcam for the first time, but it was so inconsistent that I got to buy a good one.
I bought a BlackVue Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD 16GB (replaced the 16GB for a 32GB Micro SD Card). Records 1080p @ 30fps and with a 32GB SD-Card can go for days of recordings before the last one gets erased. If you watch a Youtube recording of this camera to check the quality, keep in mind most of the uploads compresses the video so the original quality will be higher than that.
Very nice camera. If you play the video in their program on your computer you can also see the Google map of your whole trip on the side at real time due to the GPS in the camera. You can also see the screen in real time while in the car if you connect your android/iphone with the WiFi's feature of the camera.
I used to have it in my 2012 Accord connected to the 12v power because it only activates when the ignition is On. So it records and it turns off when you turn your car off.
I just bought a Mustang and after an entire day with the dashcam on, I just discovered that Mustangs have the 12v power on all the time (??). So I have to buy Blackvue Power Magic Pro to cut the power when the battery reaches 11.8v so it doesn't get discharged. You can also set a timer for parking mode so it records a certain amount of hours and turns off. It has a switch to cut the power when you turn off the car or you can let the camera with power so it records in parking mode.
You have to install some cables in the fuse box and attach the ground to the chassis. But it was done in 30-45 mins.
I will sell my old one in Amazon and the one that I want to buy now is BlackVue Wi-Fi 2 Channel DR550GW-2CH 16GB.
Looks awesome plus recorded video will be synchronized front and rear.
I have four of these, one in each of our cars. It's pretty good for the price, $30-$40. It plugs into the cigarette lighter and starts and stops automatically, the best resolution for it is 720p. You need to get a SD card for it so I have 16gb cards in each of them. You can certainly get better ones if you want to pay $100+ but for the price it's an excellent value.
I think it's called an FL500. I got it off amazon. I had to send the first one back because it just stopped working but the new one they sent has been running 24/7 for at least 6 months straight. Pretty happy with it for the price.
EDIT It's called an F500L http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Dashboard-Camcorder-Camera-F500L/dp/B007X4PUGU/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1381938816&sr=8-17&keywords=dash+cam+500
The reviews on Amazon seem pretty thorough on some of these.
I found this one for $25 with $5 shipping and ordered it. It got decent reviews especially considering its price and theres even videos of it in action. Plus a 16GB Class 10 SHDC Card for $11.99 with free shipping from newegg and I'm at about 40 bucks total, not bad.
I dont know what country you are in or what your budget is but i always recommend this cam for anyone who wants to add another angle. I personally have bought 5 (for me and others) and i only had a small problem with one. The quality is fantastic as is the sound and its only 25ish dollars. It is a chinese knock of product so dont expect much but again, 25 dollars. I took this vid from one a while back. Its worth checking out if price is the only thing keeping you from upgrading. And with a dash cam you dont realize you need it until its too late.
Really? My $50 dashcam from Amazon has a 1080p 30fps and a 720p 60fps shooting mode all with wide angled lens. My GoPro hero 3 has the same exact shooting ability.

Here's the one I have. I was looking for something inexpensive, and from what I found, all the inexpensive ones have very bad reviews. But if you want something that is reliable, according to reviews, you will have to spend well over $150. I bought this one about a year ago, and it's been functioning just fine. The price has dropped $10 since I dropped it. It's not the best camera, and you won't be able to see a license plate unless you are within 2 car lengths, but if you were in an accident, you would easily be able to see what happened. For the price, I'm happy with it. Although, I think it will be luck of the draw as to whether or not you get a unit that actually lasts, which is the biggest gripe in the reviews.
EDIT: Also, I thought about using my phone as a dash cam. It would actually be better, but the problem was that I'm very forgetful, and knew that I would rarely remember to do it. And that's the reason I got this one. It starts recording as soon as you turn the car on, and turns off shortly after(It has a battery in it).
I wonder if something like this would work for you:

Beware those $50 cams. When it comes down to it, they often do not have the resolution to read license plates at speed, distance, at night, or in bad weather.
Pony up for one of these, they are #1 rated on dashcam sites. I have two and they are awesome.

I did the same, took me a while to get it working properly though.
I don't know, I don't use the cable clips. I used one of these to wire it into my car and ran the cable behind the siding roof lining.
Donno about toddlers, but there is a Manga.
I have the database one, it's actually a fairly informative series. My wife actually was able to describe quite a bit about DBs and normalization and knew nothing at all prior to reading it.
Most record to an SD card, and record over old footage automatically.
