Let her into your room! She'll be much happier with more space. I highly recommend having a cat tree or two in your place. Give her a box to hide in. Or even try one of these out!

KOJIMA Shark Round House Puppy Bed with Pet Bed Mat, Small to Medium (Gray, Small) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HRXQ90I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dcINybCJMQWEE

Don't prevent her from hiding, but do challenge her once in a while to be comfortable in different rooms and open spaces.

Try the toy distraction on your 2 year old cat. That's what I meant. If she's showing aggression, it's one of the best ways to distract her from the cat who's more shy.

Make sure the new cat isn't doing anything to provoke your 2 year old cat. If she is, that behavior will need to be adjusted before the 2 year old cat can be comfortable with her.

100% agree on the tuna. If you'd like to learn about cat nutrition, I highly recommend http://www.thecatsite.com for its active forums and articles on feline nutrition (they can also give great input on behaviors)

Here are two nutrition articles to get you started:

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-choose-the-right-food-for-your-cat

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/grain-free-cat-food-what-does-it-mean

You'll find that grain free high protein wet/raw foods are best for your babies as unlike people and even dogs, cats are obligate carnivores. (Here is some of that science: https://www.waltham.com/document/nutrition/cat/dog/differences-between-cat-and-dog/284/ )
My recommendation is making a small trip to an independent pet food store (not petco, petsmart, or even pet supplies plus) Take a look on yelp for good ones in your area. (Just search for pet food stores) If there are none, try Chewy.com. They sell all sorts of pet foods (you can filter by grain free) The forums on thecatsite are very good in terms of discussion of different commercial and home-made food options. (As you might be able to tell, I've done a lot of my own research!)

But yes. You are correct. Plain tuna does not contain the amount of Taurine (that's just one or the major ones) cats need to thrive. Fish generally is something you should stray from due to high mercury content and addictiveness. (Dry food is also very addictive and contributes most to obesity, digestive issues, UTIs, urinary crystals, and more)

And good! Yes, be creative in your ways to distract her! If she's not enjoying her favorite toy, try a new one. (Cats love Da'Bird and similar long (~3 ft) fishing pole type toys. ) Check out these links.

GoCat Da Bird Rod and Feather Cat Toys, Assorted Colors https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BOVEU4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wzINybW7DMFV9

Cats really jump for these types of long fishing pole toys that use feathers or other fur like parts. I do recommend always having a handy supply of strong duct tape to fix minor issues and strengthen the parts of well-used toys. (I had to tightly reinforce the end of the rod that connects to the string so the end piece holding the string wouldn't come off)

Petmate Jackson Galaxy Cat Crawl Solid Tunnel, Green/Orange https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O3GWKHS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_UDINyb34HXAEW

Great space for stalking and hiding during play

Nature In Hand Cat Play House with Catnip and Scratcher (Cat Scratching House) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AJAHOC2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DFINybC4C5TWA

Triple function hide, stealth play, and cardboard scratcher. I have one that my cat loves! You can sometimes find seasonal looking ones on clearance at local pet stores (I have a gingerbread xmas themed one that I got on clearance for half the price on amazon) Cardboard scratchers, to me, are a must. Whether it's something like this or just by itself.

Nano Robotic Cat Toy (White/Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RWU17KS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kyINyb5FX7DB2

This one is great if you have hard wood or tile floors. Otherwise, pass.

The idea here is to give them more enrichment, hide space, and ways to play.

That said, having more vertical space is also a really good idea.

You know how cat trees (especially the 6 ft ones) are like 200 dollars at pet stores?
Check this out:

Go Pet Club Cat Tree, 50W x 26L x 72H, Beige https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003WGGWQA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_awINybGSAA2EB

BestPet CT-9073 Cat Tree Scratcher Play House Condo Furniture Toy, 73-Inch, Beige https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NOL7OQU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-wINybKYYYCDX

You can find more on amazon. Groupon or eBay are also good sources. Your cats will be more comfortable if they can observe their territory from a high place rather than hiding behind a toilet. I really do think it would help give them more confidence. You could even install cat shelves on your walls if you want to. But a cat tree(or two!) goes a long way!

Give them their own favorite places to occupy so that they are better able to share their space.

You basically need to find a way to keep him entertained in the mornings. Here's a few options:

  1. Get him a buddy. My kitten used to be so needy and wanted to play at the worst possible times up until I introduced her to one of my cats from home. I have since moved that other cat into my apartment and they are best friends. They play together and wrestle all the time. Your cat is still pretty young, so this may be a good option for him.

  2. Get him some toys/games that will entertain him for a while. There's actually a lot of toys that cats can play with that will keep them entertained on their own. If you have an iPad or a tablet you can download games for cats. I have a laser game and a mouse game that I downloaded for free and I just leave the iPad on the floor and they play with that for quite a while. Other entertaining toys we have are this (courtesy of this year's Reddit Secret Santa!) and also this. Both these toys can keep my kitties entertained for quite a while.

  3. I've never had to do this, but you could try getting up with him at 6 one morning to play, and then the next morning make it 6:15, and then so-on until you're at the ideal time for you. Again, I've never tried this, but it might be worth it.

  4. After you establish a better sleep schedule for him, keep him in your room on the nights that your roommate's girlfriend stays over. Then she can't really wake him up and make him want to play. If that's not an option, you could ask her to play with him for a couple of minutes in the morning before she leaves.

I hope you figure something out for both yours and your cat's sake. The best solution for me was to just get another cat. Now I don't usually have problems with them wanting to play at bad times anymore. But I know that for a lot of people, getting another pet just isn't an option. So I would definitely try the toys. I'm sure there's plenty of other toys out there other than the ones I mentioned that could work for your kitty as well.

One last note- if your kitty isn't neutered, I would definitely recommend getting him neutered. Neutering cats has a lot of benefits, and it might even help with the howling- source
    Again, good luck!

I am providing links but all of these are available at different retailers.

My girl enjoys the Catit Senses components. You can start out small and keep adding to it.

Catit Design Senses Super Roller Circuit Toy for Cats https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A4A7UOU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hQ8vCbXXNCGPJ

The Katris modular System looks great and my cat absolutely loves hers! We have them staggered along the wall in my living room taking her up to the point where she can touch the ceiling if she wants.

https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/katris-modular-cat-tree-2845031?cm_mmc=PLA-GG-_-PTC_P_SUP_PLA-GG_FY17_SCShopping-Draw-_-55162009170-_-A&kpid=go_1581587647_55162009170_296946065888_aud-474167082703:pla-365007370291_m&scid=scplp2845031&sc_intid=2845031&utm_config=tad0iunwp&utm_campaign=PTC_P_SUP_PLA-GG_FY17_SCShopping-Draw&utm_source=google&gclid=CjwKCAiAv9riBRANEiwA9Dqv1WA5Uw81TI2m38CE98fHwNU4OL2SzoI0QovtdA6EnKwO9LoRH7u_tBoCtmIQAvD_BwE

MousR is fun for cat and pet parent alike. You can control it with your cell phone or you can set it on auto- play to keep your cat entertained. It has an all day setting where it will go into sleep mode and then turn itself back on periodically throughout the day to get your kitties attention and get them to play.

https://petronics.io/?gclid=CjwKCAiAv9riBRANEiwA9Dqv1aqVNMna2cYSjemkdko8N-syGKRxL3tIqf7S5OjF8Koycts9zrS-LhoC2LcQAvD_BwE

The ultimate way to use up all that cat energy is with the cat-wheel, and this is the best one on the market made by One Fast Cat.

https://onefastcat.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiAv9riBRANEiwA9Dqv1dA_vXcadwai98lwk3ratu2XNPGzx1mMKognvQwA-iq69poNUAe4sRoCBD0QAvD_BwE

And though it is not a toy, it is important for cats to get adequate hydration and most of them do not. A pet fountain can really encourage them to drink. My girl loves hers! This is a link to what I have but there are different price ranges and styles out there.

PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Ceramic Dog and Cat Water Fountain, Red, 70 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HQHFDCU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rS8vCb5C0HACG

And of course kitty has to eat. Cats naturally eat six mice a day in the wild. Doc & Phoebe’s has come up with mice feeders that satisfy the hunt, catch, kill, eat instinct that all cats have. My girl loves hers and I can honestly tell she has been more content since I have been using them. It is good to feed wet food to cats so that they get the additional moisture but I feed a combination to mine, especially since she drinks so well from her cat fountain.

There are many things you can try, and ultimately it’s just the more responsible cat guardian to do. Most people think cats like to sleep all day, but my 45years of cat parent experience definitely shows otherwise. Cats will sleep if they have nothing else to do, but the two main things your cat is going to need are 1. Stimulation and play and 2. Territory.

Outdoor cats have established territory, it will take a while for your cat to adjust, so be prepared for many attempted jail breaks. A tall baby gate at the door may help, you can get a 48inch gate on amazon.

Secondly, your cat needs attention and distraction- but a couple of cat wands, one with a feather twirly at the end and one with a deer hair mouse - every cat I have ever known love these:

GoCat Da Bird Rod and Feather Cat Toy, Handmade in The USA (1 Bird) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BOVEU4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5zHZDb58EY5F7

Go Cat Cat Catcher Teaser Wand with Mouse Cat Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LPOUNW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LAHZDbYVCB38S

But what ever it’s your cat likes, work towards 10 solid hunting minutes in the morning and again at night. Use the cats favorite toy to distract when they want to go out.

Finally- there is an amazing calming product called “licks”. If your cat starts howling, you squeeze the packet on their front arm, work it into the Fur, they lick it off and it was better for calming my cat than Prozac.

Licks - Cat Zen - Calming Aid and Stress Management- Tryptophan, L-Theanine, Eleuthero Root, and Ashwagandha Root - LiquiPaks - 30 Use https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SLBMLR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4CHZDbM1TA9DC

Good luck!!!

I've moved my cats a number of times, and I learn something new with each move! You're off to a great start, and it's awesome you'll be able to spend a couple days at home with her in the new digs at the start. Here are a few suggestions that might also help:

  • Throw an old t-shirt or towel of yours into the carrier with her. Having her favorite human's scent close by will be a comfort.
  • Expanding on /u/ASpoonfullOfSass, try to give Skye a room that she can stay in for the first week or so in the new place, that also has all her stuff in it: beds, cat trees, toys, anything that belongs to her and smells like home. It will help her feel better/like she already owns the new place.
  • Once she seems more or less comfortable in her new room/or starts showing signs she wants to explore the rest of the house, let her do so—just for a little while at first. Leave the door to "her" room open, so she can retreat to familiar territory if she gets scared. As she gets accustomed to the rest of the house, move her stuff out into it, as well. For the first month or so, try to always allow her access to wherever "her" room is, if possible.
  • For the actual drive, microchipping is a good idea, as is a collar, with your name and contact info on it. My cats wear these year-round, with their name and my number embroidered on it.
  • Make sure she's familiar with the carrier she'll be in. I fed my cats inside their carriers for the month leading up to our last big move, so by the time the big day came around, they weren't unhappy about getting in their carriers.
  • If she cries during the car ride, try putting on an audiobook or talk radio. I have one cat who hates being in the car, and the only time she'd quiet down was when I played an audiobook. It seemed to soothe her somehow.
  • If you're at all concerned about her escaping her carrier on the drive, or that you may need to take her out of it for some reason before you reach your new home, a harness and leash isn't a bad idea. If you go this route, I find vest-style harnesses work best (my two cats are escape artists, and strappy harnesses won't hold them). Spend some time getting her used to wearing the harness, if you can.

The general idea is to minimize the amount of Scary New Stuff that is happening to her all at once. So the more you can make bits of moving day (being in the carrier, driving in the car, etc.) just a regular part of stuff Skye does sometimes, the less stressed she'll be.

I hope some of this helps. Best of luck with the move (and school)!

Whatever you get, go for a ceramic or metal one. Theyre easier to clean than plastic, and last longer. I put my ceramic one in the dishwasher.

You do have to clean it regularly every 1 to 2 weeks, so get one with less awkward shaped pieces to clean.

I'm pretty sure all of them have this, but make sure it uses a good filter.

Honestly cat fountains are awesome and every owner should get one. Cats that eat dry food usually do not get enough water with a normal bowl since they instinctually avoid drinking from standing water (also, avoid putting the water next to their food). Also, you have to fill it up less! It's only a minute at most every day, but it's nice not having to worry about it.

Edit: I originally had this one (or one like it) and you can see from my recommendations above the issues I had with it https://www.chewy.com/drinkwell-platinum-pet-fountain-13/dp/48102?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Drinkwell&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoKzsBRC5ARIsAITcwXGTnem57Axg6L0moqegE58nIB1v2jwT6YttNSD-ryPTYB7L0l9PSxQaAm8TEALw_wcB

I now have this one and love it: PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Ceramic Dog and Cat Water Fountain, White, 70 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BD3UN8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zG3IDbR8SK0P6

Some cats take a long while to get used to their new person. Who knows what life was like for that kitty before you adopted them? It's going to take a lot of patience to get them to trust you but the reward is worth the effort.

Honestly? Try ignoring the cat and see if it will start to come to you on its own. Don't stare at it or go after it (staring can be seen as threatening to cats), look at it indirectly while busy with something else. Have it's food bowl in the same room as you but far away so it starts to associate you with food time. Make sure you have lots of hiding places for your new cat so it can feel secure all throughout the house.

Have you read Think Like A Cat? It's a great insight into why our fuzzy felines act the way they do and how to best live with them. It might have some tips for making a skittish kitty feel more comfortable with you.

u/noxyrew · 2 pointsr/cats

Hi! Just wanted to add:

Best thing I ever invested in, was a cat tree! My cat absolutely loves it and I can't image our lives without it. Cats feel much more secure in their environments when they have higher ground they can get to. Here is an amazon link to a great brand: https://www.amazon.com/Armarkat-B5701-57-Inch-Tree-Ivory/dp/B003BYQ100/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1474819240&sr=8-2&keywords=armarkat+cat+tree

Also, to combat an litter box issues, I would suggest investing in a nice litter pad for accidents or for tracking litter out of the box. I just bought this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUU90IW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It is pricey, I know, but it has made the clean up process so much easier.

Also, please please please invest in some quality cat food. I might get some flack for this from other Redditors, but quality cat food makes a difference (I have found that there is a heated debate about dry versus wet food and whether brands really make a difference). I have chosen to err on the side of caution and buy high quality food to prevent any future health problems. From the research I have done, a combination of dry and wet food is best, and it is not ideal to simply provide dry food for cats, since cats need to get water intake from the food they eat. Here is a good article suggesting some good brands (http://www.reviews.com/cat-food/).

u/likewh0aa · 1 pointr/cats

My cat loves sisal posts but won't touch cardboard apparently! I bought her this fancy scratcher 2 months ago and she's only scratched it like twice lol https://www.amazon.ca/PetFusion-Scratcher-Construction-significantly-alternatives/dp/B004X6UEH6/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=petfusion+scratcher&qid=1551210284&s=gateway&sr=8-1

The reviews rave about how their cats love to scratch it and are laying on it all the time. My cat never does either. But she loves playing with toys in the holes so atleast its not a total waste :p

u/Snazzypantss · 3 pointsr/cats

Hopefully someone else will have some good advice, but it sounds to me like he may have Pica. If it is Pica the best thing is to basically keep dangerous things away from him. I would also suggest dog toys, something like an xs or small Kong might be good (they are pretty high quality rubber). If he wants to chew cords you might try something like this. You might also get him some cat grass to give him something he chew up and eat without hurting himself.

u/million_dollar_heist · 1 pointr/cats

Try getting one like this one, this one or this one

Using catnip or catnip oil will make it more attractive to her. I can't guarantee that she'll never scratch the furniture, but most cats prefer things like this that have a better texture for scratching.

Owning two cats is really in many ways easier than owning one. They become lower maintenance. Of course you have to spend slightly more time feeding, cleaning the litterbox, grooming etc, but the cats are happeir, better behaved, and much more pleasant to spend time with, which in my opinion is worth the small amount of extra effort.

u/rainstruum · 3 pointsr/cats

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NIZAH6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I think you could find it at PetSmart too

This is a great fountain because you can easily change how many spouts of water there are, a cat can either drink from the basin or lap up the streaming water (which my boys love to do) It is VERY easy to clean and take apart, you could even put most of it in the dishwasher if you wanted to. I've never had an issue w it causing more acne w my youngest cat, who is prone to get clusters on his chin since he doesn't really clean himself v well. He had more of it when I was just using ceramic bowls as water dishes actually.

As far as the acne on the chin, if your cat can't groom there and it seem to be bothering him, there are wipes and things you can get to help keep clean.

Try these Cord Protector - CritterCord - A New Way to Protect Your Pet from Chewing Hazardous Cords https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EH2I5O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_yd6ZBbY88G20N. They also come in special sizes for specific kinds of cords.
I’ve been with my husband for 20 years now, and he still doesn’t get cat-proofing. Sorry to bear bad news.
Also you might consider a crate for her when she can’t be supervised, just like we do for dogs. You can find pretty large ones, big enough for you to walk into and hang out, which you can do while training her what a great place it is. Feed her only in there, put her favorite toys and comforts in there, and she’ll learn to like it.

u/auditory · 1 pointr/cats

In my experience, cats kind of do what they want but you can do some things to curb their behavior. If he likes catnip, you can put catnip in the places you want him to go. Also, you might find it beneficial to get him some more places that are "his" like a cat tree and a laydown scratcher. My cat is partial to this one and will lie in it all the time.

The key to getting him to know that you don't really want to hang out is to humanely give him signals that cats understand to say "hey don't get in my space." Yelling, setting him down somewhere else or scolding won't work because cats down understand that. You can try things like blowing air in his direction if he's on your lap, or get a squirt bottle to mist water at him if he's somewhere you don't like. Make sure it's a mist, and not a directed nozzle squirt.

As an aside, you should probably talk to your GF about this.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Here are some of my cats favorite toys and furniture. He also loves wiffle golf balls and laser pointers. His bed is actually an old Serta neck support pillow we don't use anymore. A good scratching post built into a tree is also a good choice for his room. Hope this helps!

My kitties love playing in cardboard boxes and paper bags. They also love plastic straws and go nuts for the cat dancer. For when you aren't home, my cats play with the Peek-a-Prize toy and Catit Play Circuit. If you can afford it, a cat wheel is also great to keep him occupied.

Kitten attractant is something already in litter made specifically for kittens. Dr Elsey's is the one everyone swears by (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0009X49IC/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468566476&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=kitten+attract+litter&dpPl=1&dpID=41BSeOetVsL&ref=plSrch). Also, pool noodles are an excellent idea. My kitten used to love to go behind the fridge until I wedged some between the tight spot she squeezed through and the fridge. Good luck.

Super cute kitty!! I am also getting my first kitten in a few months and have done a TON of research and have read at least 7-8 books. Think Like Cat (link below) is hands down the best book with the most advise and information. I highly recommend it, it covers everything from, reading your cats mood, how to play with your cat in a productive manner, training, behavior correction , how to tell if your cat is sick and more.

What a little cutie! I have 2 cats, and this book has helped me immensely.

You may want to consider building an outdoor cat shelter. It's easy and fairly inexpensive. If you're looking to adopt this kitty, place an article of clothing belonging to you or your fiance in the shelter; this will help the kitty get used to you.

Best of luck, and keep the rest of us in the loop!

Thank you so much kind stranger for the long and detailed response, this honestly made my night!! heheh

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting this for my kitty:

https://www.amazon.com/Cat-Dancer-Products-Rainbow-Charmer/dp/B007VPFC8C/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=cat+wand&qid=1557282661&s=gateway&sr=8-4

but because I keep reading reviews about how they can choke on it, it makes me so nervous about any toy I plan on getting her!! Also, that's a great idea. I also was concerned about her falling over or knocking things over, but lying the scratch post sideways is a brilliant idea.

Thank you so much for the lengthy respond, it means a lot! I'll definitely be posting pictures in r/aww when I get the chance :D

The image of filing a cat's nail is just adorable, for some reason :)

We've had a few scratchers over the years that the cats have really been into:

This cat tree was a big hit and has lots of scratching posts. Both cats also love this bed - they usually give it a good scratch and then settle in for a nap!

u/Malted_Shark · 3 pointsr/cats

Off amazon! I actually received it as a wedding gift. XD To be fair, it was on the registry.

Specifically it was this one: https://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Kitty-Heated-Cat-16-Inch-Mocha/dp/B00176F9AM/ref=sr_1_3?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1494476531&sr=1-3&keywords=heated%2Bcat%2Bbed&th=1

It doesn't heat up too much, and have never felt it to be a fire hazard(some can become that way tho) and she loves it.

These entertain my cats while I am out pretty well, but they only work if your cat will initiate the play. Plus with these you can rearrange the thing to keep them engaged. I have more than one set. If you want the light up balls you need to order them separately.

u/wild_salmon · 3 pointsr/cats

Cat Attract Litter is the only litter my cat will pee on. Otherwise the floor is more attractive.

She took to it without much coaxing, but I did give her a treat after each litter box use as a reward. She was about 5 years old at the time, and 3 years later hasn't relapsed.

Checked for more pics and saw your post about him scratching. Cats usually scratch for a few reasons--relieve stress/energy, sharpen claws, or to mark territory. These PetFusion brand cardboard scratchers are kind of expensive, but my cat uses his at least 3-4 times per day. The only time he's tried to scratch the sofa is when I waited way too long to replace his favorite scratcher. Anyway, these are well-reviewed for a reason imo. Cats just really like them. A lot of the reviewers agree that they are furniture savers:

https://www.amazon.com/PetFusion-Scratcher-Cardboard-Construction-unverified/dp/B004X6UEH6

I cut them in half and screw them back together to double their lifespan.

Also, this is a good toy for cats to relieve stress, especially if they like to grab and bite and kick occasionally. This is one of my cat's faves:

My outdoor turned indoor kitty loves her mesh tent! And it’s nice because I can put her out there and do chores, like vacuuming, which she isn’t a big fan of.

u/TheUnorthodox · 1 pointr/cats

Whatever you do, don't declaw him. Soft nail caps do work and are not expensive. You can also try kinds of double-sided tape on favorite scratching areas to dissuade scratching (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Sticky-Furniture-Deterrent/dp/B0006NE4QC).
Cats do need to scratch something though. Make sure you are providing the cat with a place that he/she can scratch appropriately (scratching post, cat tree, etc.) and clip his/her claws regularly. Sometimes, just spending some time playing with the cat on top of or near a scratching post will be enough to encourage him/her to use it.

u/RockChicken · 1 pointr/cats

You know, I'm not sure; I personally haven't tried it on leather. I would probably stay away from anything like packaging tape and try something gentler. There is special furniture tape that is packaging tape-sized but less harsh, though it is more expensive than other tape. It would probably be a good idea to google a good method to clean sticky residue off leather just in case.

I always recommend getting this book, you don’t have to read it cover to cover it has a great index for different topics and stages in life.

It looks like your kitty might benefit from one of these. Every other cat bed I bought for my cat was ignored. This heated one on the other hand, she adores it.

u/selfobstructs · 1 pointr/cats

What cuties! If you haven't gotten one already, you should look into getting them a heated pet bed (like this or whatever suits your fancy). My kitties love them.

u/lovemeloveher · 7 pointsr/cats

It's a Catit Design Senses Super Roller Circuit Toy. I got one of these for my mom's kitten a few years back, she still loves it.

u/LakotaSilver · 3 pointsr/cats

I second the pet fountain - you may want to get a ceramic or stainless steel one instead of plastic, however, as plastic can easily harbor bacteria and can lead to outbreaks of "cat acne". I have this fountain:

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Drinkwell-Fountain-Ceramic-Capacity/dp/B00BD3UN8C/ref=sr_1_12?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1495836250&sr=1-12&keywords=cat+fountain

It's pricier, but worth the investment.

BTW - your kitty is a "Domestic Shorthair" - this is a catch-all term that basically covers all non-pedigreed cats of a certain fur length (the other terms are Domestic Longhair and Domestic Mediumhair, for long- and medium-furred cats, respectively). This basically means a moggy/"mutt" cat. Unless you know for certain a cat is a specific breed, with a pedigree from a breeder, they are referred to as "Domestic (fur length)hairs".

Tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed (it is the stripy pattern you see in a lot of cats). Your girl would be called "bicolor" or "tuxedo" in terms of coat color/pattern.

https://www.amazon.com/Kitty-Convict-Cat-ID-Collars/dp/B018IRQ316 This where I got mine for my two boys. I love being able to put one side information (His name, Microchip #, my cell phone number) and the other side (As shown in the picture). Even though both mine are microchip I want them to have collars so people know they are indoor kitties and that they do have a furever home too. :)

u/supersonic_princess · 2 pointsr/cats

My young kitty adored this toy. He would chase it and jump really high and just generally be very active. It was fun for both of us.

Now that he's a little older, he tends to chomp down on the end and refuse to let it go, which results in us going for a walk around the house like it's a leash (though he's leading, not me). Still fun, but less active.

u/jurisprugus · 2 pointsr/cats

If you are thinking about an electric blanket, make sure it's approved by a nationally recognized testing agency, has a thermostat with adjustable heat settings, and has an internal temperature control to shut off the blanket if it gets too hot. I use an electric blanket on low heat sometimes when I am at home and my cats love it, but I don't feel comfortable leaving it on when I am not home. When I am not home, they have a heated kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Kitty-Heated-Cat-16-Inch-Sage/dp/B00176F9AM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382927540&sr=8-1&keywords=heated+cat+bed a self-warming kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Lounge-Sleeper-Self-warming-16-Inch-20-Inch/dp/B003YIIJGM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1382928358&sr=8-8&keywords=heated+cat+bed and a polar fleece blanket I made by sewing thinsulate fabric between 2 layers of polar fleece. The polar fleece blanket is the favorite of 2 of my cats. While my other cat prefers the heated bed.

u/Velehk_Sain · 3 pointsr/cats

I got mine from Amazon (this one to be specific). It took several weeks to arrive (it came from China), but for $12 it was well worth the money. There's other sellers as well (I think one had prime shipping, but for $39 or so), though I don't know how good they are.

Sadly mine did not come with the little cushion that was supposed to be inside. I suppose it's okay since my cat likes the hard surface of a floor/carpet compared to a bed, but just something to keep in mind.

u/phantomheart · 3 pointsr/cats

So we ended up with this for the tent. Keep in mind that it's a fabric mesh, not a metal one. You can get attachments for it as well. So far, it has been a wonderful addition.

u/bluesharkies · 1 pointr/cats

Some cats like a water fountain. My cat prefers the mini culligan bottles, but to each their own.

Also, I haven't seen anyone mention a collar or harness. If you get a collar make sure it's a breakaway. I'm a fan of personalized IDs that attach to a collar with the cat's name and your cell.

Would a slow feeder toy be a possibility? I let my cats forage food out of one and it's legit just sit and use one paw to get the food out.

This is pretty much my cat arsenal. Not sure if these will work with your man but figured i'd put them out there. I also buy cat sticks for them to chew on but usually you have to supervise them because big chunks get chewed off.

Have you tried any interactive, fishing pole type toys? My cat LOVES his Da Bird toy that we purchased for him a few months back. The attachments can be easily replaced are there are many different attachments that you can get. My cat has learned the sound of me opening the closet where I keep his Da Bird and will come running and meow until I get it out to play and he will cry and whine when I stop playing with it too soon.

Not OP, but you could look into pheromone sprays which have a calming effect on stressed kitties. Typically they are sprayed at key point that cats might touch, i.e. the bottom corners of walls or chairs. They even make air diffusers with the pheromones in it and collars like OP mentioned.

u/SoullessGingerCat · 2 pointsr/cats

I have a covered box you just roll over to scoop. It's great, and it won't break like the automatic boxes.

u/thejadeshadow · 2 pointsr/cats

I recently had this problem with a new kitten we brought home (she even peed down our floor air vent.)

How many litter boxes do you have? I read that some cats want more than one box for various reasons such as disliking doing both numbers in the same box or just preferring options. And they are more likely to remember to use them. (I have two boxes and two cats. I read I should have 3 boxes for 2 cats, but my cats seem satisfied now and I have no place else to put a 3rd box)

Also, you can try Cat Attract litter....I bought some and my kitten hasn't peed out of the box since I got it.

I also second the vet recommendation too, just in case.

u/ninjalinda · 5 pointsr/cats

I am allergic to my two cats. The items listed keep my allergies at bay, with the most effective/helpful products listed first.

I use Allerpet C on my cats once a week. I use Clorox Anywhere Anti-Allergen Spray or Allersearch ADMS on my furniture and bedding.

I don't know if this would be overboard for you, but I also use Allersearch Allergen Wash for my laundry, especially to wash my bedding.

Zyrtec or Claritin handy will be helpful too.

u/kfunke · 20 pointsr/cats

The Allerpet gets rid of the things that you are allergic to on a cats skin, just make sure to apply it every 5-7 days. The Furminator will get rid of the cat hair much better than a brush or comb. Also vaccuming every few days and proper ventilation do wonders. My GF is highly allergic to cats, but when I remember to do all of these things, she is completely fine.

u/Relenq · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat has a roller track that he can use autonomously. We don't tend to see him use it that often nowadays, but he does occasionally play with it in the mornings while he's waiting for us.

He also has a tall cat tree where he can sleep/watch out of the windows, and he often uses the windowsill in our study to watch for birds. He also has his pick of cardboard boxes scattered around the apartment and often chooses to play/sit/nap in them on his own.

We also have a tunnel feeder, and a treat ball -- both used to keep him occupied and thinking at meal times.

I have one of these, while not "auto cleaning" in the sense that you have to physically rotate the box it eliminates the need to scoop. Coupled with a Litter Genie it takes me less than 30 seconds to empty my (2) cat's litter box.

Eventually I'll get myself a Litter-Robot but for now this is just fine.

This one was very affordable and we can often find the filter replacements (both filters) at a PetCo, PetSmart, and if neither has them you can find them on Amazon!

The dual filter makes it so the kitty fur doesn't clog the motor. Even our Maine Coon doesn't clog it. My husband was taking it apart and cleaning it out once every two weeks, but that was when we had five cats. We only have three babies now and so maintenance (taking it apart) is about once a month.

u/IamNoExpert · 2 pointsr/cats

I haven't heard of this before... but then I'm no expert. But you could try some Feliway spray. It mimics a cat pheromone that is supposed to calm them.

u/huniper · 2 pointsr/cats

I had an issue with my kitten for the few weeks I brought her home. What I did was buy some of this 'cat attract' litter and bought a few disposable litter pans. I then put the pans near where she tended to go to the bathroom and after a few weeks of no accidents I removed the temporary litter pans. She's now two years old and has not once gone outside the regular litter pans.

I don't think attention is the problem, the little guy is just a few weeks old and doesn't know any better. :)

u/antilumin · 1 pointr/cats

I had one sorta like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015P13QMM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wRj0Cb1EHC25V

Then one of my cats learned how to pull the tubes out. Cheater.

u/dasistverboten · 1 pointr/cats

Pay attention to your kitty. Their tails and the ears will tell you a lot about their mood! If your kitty doesn't take to you right away give it time.

Cats are pretty hardy creatures and I doubt you'll have to worry too much about hurting one... if you put a collar on kitty make sure it's a breakaway. That's one danger people don't always think about. They can choke if it gets caught and they're scrambling to get away. Also, if you've got strings on your window blinds, maybe tie them up out of reach. Be mindful of plants and foods you've got out as a lot of plants and certain foods are toxic to cats.

I might humbly suggest this toy for your kitty. Every cat I've known who had one loved this thing to bits.

u/Crystaleyes · 1 pointr/cats

This has happened with my cats any time either of them visit the vet. Usually some hissing and growling going on when the vetted cat comes home. This never lasts very long, though, then things are back to normal. If you have some blankets, bedding or toys that is used by the cat that visited the vet, maybe try rubbing them on him to hopefully put his more familiar sent back on him. If you continue to have problems, which I really doubt you will, try a product called Feliway. https://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-Feliway-Diffuser-Cats/dp/B00I9SI40S/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1479269097&sr=1-1&keywords=feliway

u/MagneticFlea · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat did this - making up for lost time when her teeth were too sore to eat.

We had to switch to wet food for half of her diet and put the dry food in a game that slows her eating (there are several devices, we used this)

u/alkaliphiles · 7 pointsr/cats

My girlfriend's two cats go ballistic if there isn't food available at all times.

My cat eats til she pukes, too. To try and prevent that, we bought two puzzle feeders. My cat also tends to harass us until we go with her to monitor her eating.

Since we got the puzzle feeders, our cats eat a lot less food overall. But mine still needs a chaperone.

u/Kaalisti · 2 pointsr/cats

If you are feeding dry food, the cat may be eating too fast. Try something like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015P13QMM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Which also makes eating fun for them. If you are feeding wet, feed less but more frequently.

Technically you can eat ants, but the Formic Acid will be bitter, and the ant can bite the tongue/mouth/esophagus. I second the suggestion you fix the ant problem.

Try providing wheat grass inside, near their bowls, so they won't eat random possibly poisonous plants outside. If you have a health food store nearby, they often sell little pint-size patches for about $2.

u/Lereas · 3 pointsr/cats

Almost everything has been covered, but may I suggest this litter box?

http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Paw-Self-Cleaning-Litter-Pewter/dp/B005E2S77C

At first, I had one of those boxes where it has the mesh segment that you lift up to sift, but then you have to pour all the litter into the other tray and stuff. It's a mess. It's one of the reasons I had never really wanted a cat to begin with until my wife brought home our two little furballs; I hated scooping litter.

I got this one and it's fucking genius. All you do is flip it over and all of the poop and clumps are in the little pull out drawer. It's goddamn magical.
