His expectations may have been too high. Also some more info on his page might help. Is it fretted or are the frets just painted on? The action looks high which makes me wonder if it's for slide only. Does it have a pick up? i.e. can it be plugged into an amp. Competition can be rough, but he seems to be doing fine. Has he tried selling them at a local street fair? Can he play them? That can help sell them. Good luck! He seems to already getting joy from building them. He should keep it going. They would make awesome gifts too.
Online.
Fret wire is cheap if you don't mind waiting a few weeks. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EQ25B7A?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Need an actual fret saw. I've never found a hardware store with a narrow kerf saw that works right.
I'm not sure about San Diego, but I'm pretty successful at finding beat up first act or the like small guitars at my local Goodwill. If they are missing strings they usually get thrown in the toy section for $1.99.
I can salvage the tuners. I have reused the frets but the tang gets damaged and will need super glue.
Sometimes I find a box there but I usually find boxes at "Vendor Mall" type places. Any cigar shops I have asked seem to have theirs spoken for or want around $10 a box. I usually end up paying 3-4$ for a good modern box. Old ones seem to be pretty high when I see them.
Wood for the necks isn't a problem for me I have a good supply of walnut and cherry, but thrift store and curb furniture is a source.
Lots of printable PDF fret layouts available free online. I use the fret calculator on stewmac's website, but there is a version of wFret I think that will create custom printable templates.
Awesome! Thanks for the step by step photos. I want to build a CBG soon.
Is this the pickup you used? Does it work without a battery?
with a guitar hanger. but i guess it might depend how big the head is.
I just picked up a pot strainer for a future project
