This is all going to come down to personal preference. The Wii U has a huge gamepad that your daughter will probably not be able to handle properly, and it doesn't have a camera.

I know you're anti-Microsoft, I'm just the opposite, but I decided to branch out and bought a Ps3, which I loved, and plan to get a PS4. I am not sure what your story is, but it just became evident to me that being a fanboy was causing me to miss out.

I would recommend the Xbox 360. You can pick one up super cheap, make sure you get the Kinect. When my son was your daughter's age, his favorite game was Once Upon a Monster. Some other good kids games on the 360 are listed below that on the Amazon link, I haven't tried the other sesame street game, but the Rush game is really cool. Another cool Kinect game the kids loved was Kinect Disneyland Adventure which lets you virtually walk around Disney World and interact with characters. In addition, Kinectimals allows your kid to play with and care for a virtual animal, it's really cute. The only thing close to that I've found on PS3 is Eyepets, but it's just not as kid friendly, in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Wii U, and they're about to come out with a new console so the price will probably drop. It has a lot of games geared toward kids, but it neglects the under-6 crowd, in my opinion. One cool thing about it, though, is that your kid can play on the gamepad itself without the TV, which I've found to be pretty convenient when I get tired of kid games and want to pop a big boy game into the Xbone.

Edit: I'd recommend watching that first video on the Once Upon a Monster page. I know a lot of times they advertise stuff that doesn't come to fruition, but the way they show it is exactly how it works, and it's a blast even for me to play, we break it out when the younger cousins are around.

I know it can be tempting, but you should never buy a console solely because of the hardware. Hardware is no good if it doesn't play the games you want to play. Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake are both PS4 exclusives. And though nothing has been officially stated, many people assume a Spyro remaster is coming next, especially in the wake of Crash Bandicoot's critical reception and sales numbers.

The idea that PS5 will feature backwards compatibility is likewise only a rumor, however, it's backed by logical evidence. But it's worth keeping in mind that Sony has a business interest in NOT offering backwards compatibility, so that they can more easily sell Playstation Now subscriptions, classic digital titles (ala Nintendo's virtual console), and remastered classics. (In other words, just because they can, doesn't mean they will.) And if Sony does ultimately offer b/c with PS5 and copies Microsoft's approach to the tiniest detail, then the PS5 won't have b/c at launch but will have it patched in later, and even then only for the most popular titles. I still have my Xbox 360 hooked up because my Xbox One isn't a 100% replacement for it, and it probably never will be. So buying any console with backwards compatibility in mind is something of a crapshoot.

It might be worth mentioning that you do have options besides Playstation and Xbox. Nintendo Switch has been very popular since it launched in March, and remains perpetually sold out. To get one at this point in time, you'd either have to buy one from an eBay scalper or watch stock trackers carefully and be in the right place at the right moment. But it doesn't take advantage of 4K, and in what could be either a pro or a con depending on your mindset, offers less crossover with the catalog of games you already have access to on PC. However, Nintendo does have a stellar reputation for offering approachable games and single-system multiplayer, and is often thought of as a good choice for girlfriend gaming. Your other option is to run an extra video cable from your PC to your TV if your hardware supports it, and buy some wireless controllers. (I recommend wireless Xbox One controllers, or wireless Xbox 360 controllers if you're running Windows 7.) Then you can just play PC games on your couch, although it won't be quite as simple to start and switch between games, which might not sit well with your g/f.

Connecting multiple consoles to your TV is not particularly menacing, unless you just don't have the physical space for it. If you have a 4K set you probably have enough spare HDMI ports, and if not you can get an HDMI switch to expand the number of available ports, along with a power strip or two if need be. I have 6 consoles hooked up to my 4K flatscreen — PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii U. That's why I don't worry about backwards compatibility.

Any "gaming headsets" are usually overpriced for what they offer, but if you want wireless, the most recommend are the Gold headset by Playstation.

However, if you don't mind a Y splitter, then you can also connect a Modmic and a headset, here is a good list of reviewed headsets specifically to see how good they are for gaming.

Edit: also, if you want a more expensive headset but don't want to pass your $100 budget, you can always get a cheaper mic. I used a zalman mic for a good year before getting a modmic, sound quality was amazing for the price, but no noice cancelation.

It's absolutely possible to hook a computer up to it.

If your computer has HDMI output, this will do the trick. Don't believe the "hurr durr didn't work" reviews, they either weren't setting up their HDMI out correct or they forgot to toggle the NTSC/PAL switch (which will give you a rolling and/or black and white image). If you have DVI, VGA, etc., there are options for that as well. I used a mini Displayport to VGA, then VGA to composite adapters on my 2009 Macbook Pro and get perfect composite video even though I had to convert twice. I often found myself forgetting if I was playing the real hardware or an emulator until I looked down and remembered I was using a USB controller (I own much of the real hardware and played it as well). Then I moved and switched to an HDTV and definitely appreciated the HQ2X filter to clean up the blocky graphics you get on an HD screen.

The games you play on your Wii are still emulated and honestly the homebrew emulators are probably more accurate to the real console or may even be licensed to Nintendo for the Wii VC in the first place. The emulator community takes accuracy very seriously and retro systems are getting emulated to the point that they accurately replicate incorrect functions as a real system would (i.e. a glitch will work the same). Some systems like N64 still aren't perfect, but anything pre-1995 is damn near perfect at this point.

You should get a good 24 or 27 inch monitor, IPS panels are really good and yes 1080p is enough. I have used an Asus MG279Q for my PS4, but now I'm using a TV. The image quality was awesome, but for the sound I had to use a HDMI audio extractor, it isn't hard to setup, basically you just have to hook everything up.

There are definitely lots of users on BO3 but if I were to have to only get 1 game...and it be a cheap game. It would have to be Battlefield 4.

  • You can get all the DLC next to nothing or even free if you keep your eye out.

  • Massive community on PS4

  • Battlefield has vehicles (or not if you choose a different game mode). It's better IMO to have the option. I enjoy the different tactics available to you & how you have to adapt, overcome and improvise to win sometimes.

If you want someone to show you the ropes let me know PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

  • Edit - wrong info on BF1 current servers

Could it be the original xbox?

https://www.amazon.com/Halo-Special-Xbox-Game-System/dp/B002B5FQC4

This is one version and that is around the time it was out. What did the controller look like? Did it have dual joysticks? Did it have 4 face buttons, dpad, and trigger buttons?

> Mac Mini

is that '09 model? all aluminium ones can drive 1440p im almost sure

for cheap 1080p panels I don't think you can do much better than this ASUS. Wirecutter recommends it too.

I use this:

Your console needs to have optical out, though. I don't think the PS4 slim supports optical, does it?

The extreme (expensive) option is to get a keyboard/mouse converter unit for the PlayStation 4, like the XIM4:

CD binders will lead to scratches. Buy a shelf. Here's a relatively inexpensive one that holds a lot of games.. I had to buy something like this for the same reason.

u/krownroyal83 · 1 pointr/consoles

Oh i know. I was thinking about getting something like this

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00E2TKB5E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A21O1O0VBTB0YT&psc=1.

I have no idea is my console is a "slim" model. I think it is though. I just know it's an arcade.

>The very same article states that the "...numbers are only going to keep growing – and it won’t be long before digital purchases account for the majority of software sales".

One thing are numbers, other are expectations. No one said digital sales weren't increasing over physical, I was just pointing out how your argument that "Physical distribution is dead" was just wrong. Here is an article that shows how Q3 2018 physical sales on PlayStation are still over 50%. Decreasing for sure. Not dead.

>You call it abstract but just look the help forums and see how often even system updates that go through several beta stages cause problems or bricks. And now you have deal with this for each and every update on every game?!

I really do not understand your point. As a matter of fact, last time I've checked, software releases also go through beta stages and can cause problems or bricks. Unless you are suggesting firmware version on the cartridges (which isn't by far a requirement) I do not see how this proves as an disadvantage. Install a digital game in your SSD. Now imagine the same game installed in an SSD, but this is external instead of internal storage. What is the catch, really?

>That is not how storeMI/Optane works. Your console wouldn't swap out the full size game into the cache.

Does NBA2K19 needs 31.5GB of storage to run in the Nintendo Switch, plus 5GB of internal memory? How many games on PlayStation 4 do you know that have the ability to play the first few hours of the game without downloading the full package? 15% of the games? 10%? There is a very big difference between what is achievable and how developers handle those possibilities against the investment of time and effort. At the worst case scenario, the full game needs to be loaded to the SSD, and this is how we should approach the problem when we speak about it, instead of believing that developers will actually put effort towards development of a feature that is only usable in the console space out of their good-will, and completely unusable on PC landscape.

______________________

Storage space is a non issue in the future, no disagreement there. As for today, or a console on shelves next year, I am not so sure. When it comes to physical media, there are three options, which I present by decreasing probability (according to my beliefs): physical media is extinct, flash memory becomes the new standard for physical media; a new disc format with higher storage capacity (and ideally better reading speeds) is released.

I seriously can't understand your accounting. Here's a link to a two double-layered BD sized SDD on amazon. 20 US$. Currently discounted to 17 US$ :D.
