    >This topic is addressed in our FAQ. See the link for more details about the different dub versions and soundtracks.

There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen.

  • For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Blu-ray set [16:9 Cropped]
  • For Dragon Ball Kai, your best option is most recent Blu-ray/DVD set. If you prefer Kenji Yamamoto's musical score, you want "Parts 1-4" of the Part set. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set. [4:3 Native]

    Other releases include:

  • The Dragon Ball Z Orange Brick DVD set [16:9 Cropped], which are criticized for their aggressive filtering, over-contrasted colors, automated center crop, and excessive detail loss during scenes with shaky picture.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box set [4:3 Native], the now-out-of-print collector's edition which is considered by many to be the best DVD set of the series. Unfortunately, they run around $700 for a complete set on eBay, and don't include the American broadcast soundtrack.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Blu-ray Level Sets [4:3 Native], the now-cancelled Blu-ray set which was praised for its faithful colors, grain preservation and original 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • The Dragon Ball Z "Rock The Dragon" set [4:3 Native], which contains all 53 episodes of the original Ocean Group dub.

If you prefer a stream, you can watch the series on several online services including FUNimation. Streams are available subbed or dubbed, but both versions will feature the original Japanese soundtrack.

>This topic is addressed in our FAQ.

  • Dragon Ball tells the story of Goku through the end of his childhood and spans 153 episodes. It is the foundational story of Goku and his friends, and skipping it is not recommended. If you want to skip filler episodes, you can use this guide.
  • Then, watch EITHER Dragon Ball Z OR Dragon Ball Z Kai.
  • Dragon Ball Z spans 291 episodes. The Japanese voice actors were in their prime when recording Z, and the Funimation home release with subtitles by Steve Simmons is highly recommended. The Funimation dub, on the other hand, is notorious for its inexperienced voice actors and egregiously creative translations. If you want to skip filler episodes, use this guide.
  • Dragon Ball Z Kai spans 167 episodes in the international version and 159 episodes in the Japanese version. It is a remastered version of Z with the majority of the filler removed. The Funimation dub offers a now-veteran cast and considerably more accurate translations. If you have no nostalgia for the original Z dub, this is the recommended route.
  • Dragon Ball Super comes next, according to in-story chronology. It begins about 4 years after the final battle of Dragon Ball Z, or about 6 years before the 10-year time skip at the end of Z (episodes 289-291). The first two arcs of Super are retellings of the final two Dragon Ball Z films (14 and 15), so you have a handful of choices on how to continue the story:
  • The more complete route (recommended): Watch the JSAT special and Battle of Gods. From there, read Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, and watch Resurrection 'F'. When finished, move on to Dragon Ball Super.
  • The anime-only route: Skip straight to Dragon Ball Super, understanding that it adapts Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' into story arcs, with some details changed. For a list of changes, see here and here, scrolling down to "Main Differences From the Theatrical Film".
  • The combination Super/Movies route: Watch episodes 1 and 2 of Dragon Ball Super. Watch Battle of Gods. Watch Episodes 15-18 of Dragon Ball Super. Watch Resurrection 'F'. See this post, then continue with Episode 28 of Super.
  • The quickest route (for the lazy/impatient): Watch Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F'. See this post, then continue with Episode 28 of Super.
  • Dragon Ball GT spans 64 episodes and begins 5 years after the 10-year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z, i.e. well after the time setting of Super. It follows those events, but it is the only series not based on a story by Akira Toriyama, and its continuity has been overwritten by Dragon Ball Super.
  • The rest of the movies/specials are separate from the main storyline, and are entirely optional. If you'd like to watch all of the movies and specials in the order released, use this list.

There's only one way that I know of to buy pre-Z Dragon Ball uncut and in its entirety. You'll want to pick yourself up the Blue Bricks. The quality isn't terrible compared to the Orange Bricks. Don't forget about the movies.

For Z, you'll definitely want to avoid the Orange Bricks. The only good thing about this release is that it finally made Dragon Ball Z easy to buy without collecting endless DVDs. But the picture is botched up beyond being saved, and it's cropped to widescreen. Ideally you'd want to purchase the Dragon Boxes, but they're out-of-print and cost a pretty penny. Maybe check eBay if you're interested. You're probably going to want to go with the latest Blu-Ray releases. They're still cropped like the Orange Bricks, but they're a superior overall product even if they still aren't up to par with what we should be getting. Pick up the movies and Battle of Gods too.

GT is pretty simple. Buy the Green Brick. Like the pre-Z Blue Brick, the "remastering" didn't destroy the integrity of the product. It also comes with the one GT TV special. Yay!

And if you're interested in what order you should watch all this, check out our guide.

u/BulmaBriefs · 4 pointsr/dbz

Seeing it in person is always the best way to purchase.

Local comic shops. Barnes and Noble, FYE, Hot Topic and other major retailers are carrying high quality merch.

And most importantly, Conventions! If there is an anime con in your area, GO! If the con life ain't for you, then go the last couple hours on Sunday, pay $10 for a pass and head straight to the dealers room. Vendors will be easier to haggle down and price match other vendors on the floor right before closing.

If you are purchasing online there are some red flags to avoid.

Most importantly, check the origin of shipping. If it ships from China, there is a 98% chance it is fake. Nearly all figures are "Made in China" but very few legitimate sellers ship out of China.

Second, the price. If the figure is being sold on Amazon for $60 and you find it for $15 on eBay or another seller, it's likely fake. You can always ask the seller for pictures of a product before ordering.

AVOID SITES LIKE THIS

Lastly, make sure to check for the foil Toei sticker. Not all official products will have the sticker but a majority do. And if you know it's a figure that should have a sticker, it's easy to spot the fakes by the sticker alone.

In terms of brands, it depends on the kind of figure you want.

If you want the posable figures, then you want SH Figuarts like this Vegetto.

If you want statues, brands like Banpresto and Bandai have a great series of statues. Watch out, sometimes Amazon sellers will send fakes, so research who you buy from and message them if you need to.

You should expect to spend $30-$100 on quality figures and statues. Below that there are mini pvc figures like the WCF collection that hang around ~$15 (except the rare ones) and little statue/scenes that come out of jp arcade machines like these that I've been buying for around $8-12 at cons.

Good luck. Happy collecting!

Sorry for the weird angle. But yeah, I too showed off the Dragon Balls & case looooong ago but I figure I'd share links for alot of people that were wondering where to get certain items. Mainly people are interested in the Dragon Balls & case.

The Mini SSB I bought in a small shop in Los Angeles but if I find it through eBay or Amazon I'll link it over. The big Gogeta Statue is a Resin that's been sold out for a while now

EDIT: So I started looking for the Base that holds Shenron & it turns out they sell the complete setup now lol

Isn't a bad bundle deal

u/VegettoEX · 15 pointsr/dbz

Jaco the Galalctic Patrolman was an 11-chapter manga, written/illustrated by Akira Toriyama, serialized in 2013 in Weekly Shonen Jump both in Japan and America/internationally (in English by Viz). It received a collected release in Japan in 2014, and earlier this year in America from Viz (print/digital).

Shueisha hyped it ahead of time, somewhat spoiling things, as the "shocking revival of Dragon Ball".

Without ACTUALLY spoiling things for you: it's a wonderful comedy series that works beautifully on its own and provides a rather perfect lead-in to Dragon Ball.

Then it got a bonus chapter in its collected release, "Dragon Ball Minus," which may be one of the most derided pieces of Dragon Ball content in decades.

Funny how that works.

You can purchase the print edition from a variety of places (like Amazon), or the digital edition also from a variety of places (like Amazon or directly from Viz themselves).

u/EmmaWinters · 1 pointr/dbz

Since this is something a lot of you want to do, I'll be happy to set up and sticky a thread at the usual time.

> Also, I'm happy to send links in private messages directly to videos or a site where you can find your own links, or just torrent it,

While we can't exactly stop you, we'd prefer that you don't. Unlike Dragon Ball Super, the Dragon Ball Z movies are available on both DVD and Blu-ray, and for very cheap. We will not be linking to or encouraging others to watch a free web stream.

u/mynameisnotjacob · 14 pointsr/dbz

Oh yeah no doubt. I was about to buy the Batman Beyond complete series but I ended up finding this. Only had enough money for one so that was an easy decision lol. They also had this and this DBZ movie collection for like $15 each. Pretty bummed I couldn't get them.

u/Gold_Jacobson · 12 pointsr/dbz

He is the main character of Akira Toriyama's recent short comedy manga: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman." It's a funny story that takes place in the DB universe.

The manga he starts in takes place before Dragonball begins. And it appears that he returns to earth to star in this movie.

I recently just bought it off amazon. It's a fun read.

u/Im_A_Fuckin_Seahorse · 1 pointr/dbz

I've purposely avoided SH Figurarts because of the crazy prices, plus I have enough addictions with my DC figures/statues as it is. However, one line I have enjoyed, which isn't overly pricey are Banpresto's DB statues. They have a 6-7inch scaled line and a 10inch line, both with amazing detail. Those are recommendations I'd certainly give fans of newer and older DB material.

  1. SSGSS Goku - http://www.amazon.com/Banpresto-Dragon-Movie-Figure-Volume/dp/B00QYUCY1S/ref=pd_sim_21_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=416etiuM8GL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1TY14RGPWQTZW00Z6HY9

At the bottom of each link, you'll find additional recommendations of other Banpresto based products if they interest you.
u/Nickolaus · 2 pointsr/dbz

I only own the Dragon Ball Z blu-ray sets. They are the better releases, besides the Dragon Box set, which is going to cost you about 700 dollars. You may be able to pick them up for cheaper, but that would require you to scout eBay every single day. The ones that are cheap are the ones that are usually picked up the fastest.

Amazon | Price
---|---
Dragon Ball Z: Season 1 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 2 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 3 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 4 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 5 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 6 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 7 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 8 | $20.49
Dragon Ball Z: Season 9 | $20.49

In my opinion I would wait until you find a good deal on the Dragon Box sets. You could also buy the Spanish Dragon Box set, which is what I own. It has been a bit of a process ripping subtitles and audio from my blu-ray set onto my Spanish Dragon Box set. The Spanish Dragon Boxes are a lot cheaper and still are being produced.

u/alan2500 · 1 pointr/dbz

You could get him a figure, like this one http://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Tamashii-Nations-Figuarts-Saiyan/dp/B00EL3W546 i know i would have loved a high quality figure as a kid, there is also a version where you can move its limbs http://www.amazon.com/Bandai-73944-Trunks-S-H-Figuarts/dp/B006HBXIQ4 but as you can see, its pretty expensive, i think its because it is not widely avaiable at the moment.

You know that Jaco first appeared in his own Jaco the Galactic Patrolman manga before he showed up in Resurrection F and Super, right? I strongly suggest reading it sometime. You can get the entire one-volume story for well under $10 on Amazon.

Okay, if the Blu-rays are better quality, I guess I'll go for those.

(The bottom three are DVD box sets, but I noticed that the DVDs and Blu-rays are about the same price, but the DVDs have more movies on them, compared to the Blu-rays that only have two each.)

u/XZero319 · 2 pointsr/dbz

Here's Season 3. You can follow the recommended items through to get the others from there if you want.

As a heads up, Funimation has its own online store and periodically has sales for the complete series for around $130.
