Series 1 was released on Blu-Ray in North America back in 2016, and everything from Series 5-11 has been released on Blu-Ray as it was initially released.

There were sets released for 11 and 12 called “The Complete Actor’s Name Years” which were the best deal for those respective eras, and come in beautiful books that house all of the discs. Matt Smith’s is out of print, so that one isn’t really financially viable anymore, but Peter Capaldi’s is still available for a really good price.

Series 2-4 and the Specials are getting a Blu-Ray release in NA in a few weeks called the Complete David Tennant Collection. This is by far the best deal I’ve ever seen for Doctor Who, as it’s only $35 to pre-order and contains every David Tennant episode, plus his animated episodes and appearances on Sarah Jane Adventures.

Series 11 and Resolution have both been released on Blu-Ray separately, but if you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, I would recommend waiting until Jodie’s era as the Doctor is complete, as they will release a box set of her episodes for a better price, similar to the other Doctors.

As for Series 1 and 5-7, I would recommend waiting for a sale to pick those up. I’m told that Barnes & Noble does a BBC sale sometime around the end of the year, so that would be the best time to pick them up. Keep in mind that the Matt Smith specials The Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor are not included in Series 7’s Blu-Ray, and need to be purchased separately. With that, you should own all of New Who.

Side-note: Doctor Who is technically region locked. The reason I say technically is that apparently episodes still play if you import Blu-Rays from the UK, but there is conflicting info on if the special features play. I’d recommend sticking to North American releases just to avoid any potential problems with playback.

Forget this word when it comes to Doctor Who: 1, 2

---

EIGHTH DOCTOR

BOOKS:

BBC: Eighth Doctor Adventures

  • These novels pick up immediately after the TV Movie.
  • The first novel, The Eight Doctors, relies heavily on Classic Who continuity. You may wish to skip it, or just read the Prologue; Chapters 1, 2, and 23; and the Epilogue to get the new companion's introduction.
  • Vampire Science and Alien Bodies are also well-regarded early starting points.
  • Alternatively, The Burning apparently works well as a starting point for the later EDAs
  • You can buy most of these novels online on websites like Amazon and eBay.

    COMICS:

    Radio Times: Doctor Who

  • These comics were printed in Radio Times 3775-3816.
  • They take place between the first two EDA novels.
  • The ending of the strip is a bit abrupt, as the run was cut short.
  • It is quite difficult to get a hold of these (without piracy).

    Doctor Who Magazine (1996-2005)

  • These comics were printed in DW Magazine 244-353. I highly recommend them.
  • They've been collected into four graphic novels that are still in print and available on Amazon:
  1. Endgame: UK, US, Canada
  2. The Glorious Dead: UK, US, Canada
  3. Oblivion: UK, US, Canada
  4. The Flood: UK, US, Canada

    Titan Comics: The Eighth Doctor

  • Mini-series set shortly before (or possibly during a quiet period of) the Time War.

    AUDIOS:

    BBC: Earth and Beyond

  • Short stories read by Paul McGann that tie into the BBC EDA novels.
  • The first story, Bounty, depicts new companion Sam's first trip in the TARDIS.
  • The original release, along with its first re-issue - Tales from the TARDIS 2, are incredibly difficult to obtain, but luckily it has recently been re-released.

    Big Finish: Main Range

  • Full-cast audios that usually run 2 hours, and are divided into 4 parts (aka Classic Who format).
  • The Eighth Doctor releases in this multi-Doctor range are set during an early period of his life.
  • Stories featuring Mary are set before those featuring Charley, but as they were released later they generally work better being heard in release order.
  • I recommend starting with Storm Warning and working your way through the Charley stories before getting into the Mary ones.

    Big Finish: Eighth Doctor Adventures

  • Full-cast audios that usually run 1 hour, and make up larger seasonal arcs (aka New Who format)
  • These Eighth Doctor tales are set during a later period of his life, and don't require knowledge of the previous Main Range releases. Although, listening to the Charley audios does give you insight into the Series 4 finale.
  • The first EDA release, Blood of the Daleks, is a great place to start for New Who fans.

    Big Finish: Dark Eyes

  • Full-cast audios divided into four boxsets, each containing four 1 hour linked-stories.
  • The first story contains heavy spoilers for the BF Eighth Doctor Adventures finale.
  • I recommend listening to the Eighth Doctor Adventures, Robophobia, and UNIT Dominion first.

    Big Finish: Doom Coalition

  • Full-cast audios with the same format as Dark Eyes.
  • A companion is carried over from Dark Eyes, but this still works well as a starting point.
  • You might want to consider listening to The Black Hole before this.

As a fellow female Whovian, who likes silly things (DW themed socks are awesome btw)

Here are a few suggestions:

Adipose plushie

Sonic Screwdriver

Exploding Tardis Blanket

TARDIS Mug

Tom Baker's Scarf

The list goes on and on :) Finding out which Doctor is their favorite might help narrow it down. But you can't go wrong with Doctor Who stuff :)

Good luck!

u/GreyShuck · 1 pointr/doctorwho

Hugely dependent on which Doctor you prefer (and whether you have seen all their TV stories, since several of the books will refer to them or be direct prequels or sequels).

I'm going through them by Doctor and am almost through the Pertwee era, so for the first three I'd suggest:

  • Time and Relative, Empire of Glass or Ten Little Aliens
  • Dreams of Empire, The Dark Path or The Indestructible Man
  • Eye of the Giant, Harvest of Time or Last of the Gaderene

After that, there are the books in the "50th Anniversary collection" which are fairly reliable choices (but I've not read them myself so far):

4= Festival of Death, 5= Fear of the Dark, 6= Players, 7 (They have the novelisation of Remembrance of the Daleks, but I'd suggest Nightshade instead.), 8= Earthworld, 9=Only Human, 10= Beautiful Chaos, 11= The Silent Stars Go By

For the War Doctor, it has to be Engines of War

For Twelve, if you want a full length novel, then The Blood Cell is the best so far, but the novella Lights Out is actually the best print-based tale for Capaldi's Doctor overall.

On the subject of novellas/shorts, there is the 12 Doctors, 12 Stories collection (which Lights Out is part of) and that might be a good place to start.

Otherwise, there are loads of short story collections, most of which feature tales by different authors featuring different Doctors, so you're pretty much bound to find something you like in any of those.
u/b2monstermouse · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

Maybe this?

Doctor Who: 12 Doctors, 12 Stories - I've only read the first couple. They're not long, but they're not bad - each written by a different author.

There's also this one:

Summer Falls and Other Stories - I've only read Summer Falls, which was the book featured in The Bells of Saint John, "written by" Amy Pond. It's a cute read.
The other books were added after I bought the initial ebook, so I can't comment on those, but the reviews seem to be good.

u/thornybacon · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

Yeah that's probably the best for an overview, but I also like this blog's timelines for the companions/monsters etc:

https://bradleybasement.wordpress.com/doctor-who-timelines/

There's also a book 'AHistory' by Lance Parkin:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ahistory-Unauthorised-History-Doctor-Universe/dp/1935234110/

I haven't read it myself, and it hasn't been updated for a few years but I've heard good things.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/doctorwho

I haven't read it yet, but since I love his other stuff I'm going to recommend Alastair Reynold's Harvest of Time.

u/LokianEule · 5 pointsr/doctorwho

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1935234110

I own it. It's glorious.

It's chronological by history, not by the Doctor's timeline.

It's not updated for the latest new Who novels or Big Finish audios, but it's the best out there afaik.

u/Merganman4 · 5 pointsr/doctorwho

Well I don't know where you're looking, but you're clearly looking the wrong places. Stores like HMV and Barnes and Noble have them. I've seen them here in Canada at Sunrise Records (which used to be HMV).

Season 12

[Season 19](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJ397JH?aaxitk=Jgx53MOwOjcEnZo6kjuV3A&pd_rd_i=B07GJ397JH&pf_rd_p=3fade48a-e699-4c96-bf08-bb772ac0e242&hsa_cr_id=9996827840201&sb-ci-n=productDescription&sb-ci-v=Doctor%20Who%3A%20Peter%20Davison%20S1%20(BD)

Season 18

Season 10

These versions are all only available in North America, the key differences being the packaging is very basic and they're called, for example, "Tom Baker Season 1" instead of Season 12.

u/JakeM917 · 1 pointr/doctorwho

Series 1-4

Series 5-7

Series 8-10

They're all on DVD but if you want to go cheap this is your best route.

u/LegoK9 · 4 pointsr/doctorwho

>The other day I was at my local Wal-Mart and I saw the new $35 USD box sets that have been put out of the show (Chris & David, Matt, and Peter).

Like this, this, and this?

As far as I know they are complete collections with all the episodes and specials of the respective Doctors.

The BBC shop gives more details:

>Climb in the TARDIS for the adventure of a lifetime with this enormous Doctor Who collection featuring every episode of the first two Doctors of the modern era, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. [etc.]

>60 Episodes

u/calkinsc · 1 pointr/doctorwho

I've recently read both Harvest of Time and The Wheel of Ice and found them both enjoyable. I think it is neat that they are writing new stories for classic Doctors, Pertwee and Troughton here, respectively. Reading the dialog of Zoe, Jamie, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, etc. really gives the feeling of a period episode.

There are also many books from when the series first went off the air that were written at that time, starring the McCoy Doctor, but while I have quite a few, I haven't read them since that time, so can't comment well. IIRC, Bernice Summerfield was first a companion in those books, later appearing in the Big Finish audio stories, so some could be worth a read as origin stories.

u/embiggenedmind · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

You'll do well with two options off the top of my head:

The Key to Time with Tom Baker, that set spans an entire series.

And The Trial of a Timelord with Colin Baker. I recommend the former ;)

u/madison_sn · 11 pointsr/doctorwho

It's available as an ebook

My friend found a high-res PDF of the cover and glued it onto an old book she had laying around :)

u/PSBlake · 1 pointr/doctorwho

If you're just needing a visual medium, the Doctor Who Magazine 8th Doctor strips are all collected in four graphic novels.

u/Lurking_Grue · 8 pointsr/doctorwho

I just finished this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Harvest-Alastair-Reynolds/dp/0385346808

It was like a big budget Pertwee episode and rather good.

u/LostInTheGate · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

https://www.amazon.com/Trailer/dp/B07H129T5Z/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537725609

You can already buy the season pass - which is really the way to go - it'll save you money vs buying each episode individually. It'll even automatically notify you when a new episode is available, so you won't miss it!

u/tinglep · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

Yeah but what about the Tennant? That's all we care about and this...

https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Tenth-Doctors-Screwdriver/dp/B0009P5YXO

...is absolute filth. The slide button keeps falling off and eventually gets stripped from being reapplied over and over.

u/Primetastic · 3 pointsr/doctorwho

If you have an XBox, you can purchase the season on the Zune Media Player. You can also download zune and do it through your computer. Additionally, you can also purchase from Amazon instant video.

http://www.amazon.com/Season-7-Trailer/dp/B008ZXTOTW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346611259&sr=8-1&keywords=doctor+who+season+7

You can either purchase it for 1.99 per episode (good if you want to purchase at your leisure) or the automatic payment which will be around 1.89 and will be charged with every new episode released on a weekly basis. You won't be able to see it on premiere night, but you will be able to catch it the next day.

I really hope this info helps you, we would hate to see you have to leave, we whovians need to stick together. =)

u/doohy · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

Same on Amazon in the US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B06XPTWTGN?ref_=aiv_dp_season_select

> For a limited time, Doctor Who is on sale; catch the first episode for free.

u/twadepsvita · 1 pointr/doctorwho

I think you're thinking of either Destiny Of The Doctor or 12 Doctors, 12 Stories. I have the latter i=as a boxset with the postcards, and it's good. I'll probably get Destiny when I've managed to get through my Big Finish backlog.

u/bluehawk232 · 1 pointr/doctorwho

The Matt Smith ones are gone and very expensive now. Don't know when they'll do them again.

u/123knaeckebrot · 1 pointr/doctorwho

I didn't found it on amazon uk, but on amazon com - but I'm not sure if I really would be able to stream it after purchase. Have you ever bought a stream there before?

Do you think the $28.99 for season 1101 (?) are already the "season pass" ?

https://www.amazon.com/Trailer/dp/B07H129T5Z/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538500221&sr=8-1&keywords=doctor+who+season+11

u/bluemooneyes · 1 pointr/doctorwho

I just bought this one, which is the 10th doctor sonic:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009P5YXO

Also cool to note: The prop made for the new series was small. Then this toy came out - it was bigger to accommodate the batteries - and the Doctor Who producers revamped the TV prop on a mold from this toy. So this Sonic Screwdriver is exactly the same size as the one Doctor Who uses on TV!

u/Albinobird · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

I picked my copies up at the school bookstore, because I was in a rush. I found copies of them on Amazon though:

u/unusualJD · 1 pointr/doctorwho

Here's for Husbands of River Song in season 4
https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Husbands-River-Song/dp/B018MJAMQM

Looks like Mysterio isn't included with Prime
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MQOFKRV?ref_=aiv_dp_season_select

They're both under the title ' Doctor Who - Christmas Specials' instead of plain DW

u/floatinondafreshies · 7 pointsr/doctorwho

I took philosophy and science fiction at my university. We mostly just watched episodes of Doctor Who and wrote about the philosophical aspects of it. Also my teacher co-edited this book: Doctor Who and Philosophy. She was cool.

u/Lysander_Night · 2 pointsr/doctorwho

I have purchased a region free DVD player and started buying region 2 DVD's because OH HELLL NO!! Just 54 more and my collection of complete serials is done. I refuse to buy incomplete serials. Not buying underwater menace with it's telesnap crap. When they're animated like Moonbase, reign of terror, ice warriors, the invasion, and tenth planet I will gladly buy them. Those telesnap reconstructions hurt my head, I find them totally unwatchable.

u/NoMoreAnxiety · 8 pointsr/doctorwho

You're in luck, stranger! There are two alternatives out there: the touch-activated sonic, and the one-button sonic. I'm not sure if the one-button has been released yet, but here's a link for the touch-activated one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Doctors-Control-Screwdriver/dp/B00LA2R9VA

u/Bioluminescence · 5 pointsr/doctorwho

Amazon should have it tomorrow - that's usually the way. You need to wait an extra day, but it's legal and can be in SD or HD.

u/Teotwawki69 · 1 pointr/doctorwho

As Slestak pointed out, Amazon does have it as streaming video. Unlike earlier seasons, which are included with Prime Membership, you have to pay extra for this one -- IIRC, US$ 1.99 per episode, or US$ 1.49 per episode if you subscribe to the whole season in advance.

Part one is here, and the link to part two is just under the big box...

u/XTheRedDragonX · 1 pointr/doctorwho

Peter Capaldi Collection

Eccleston/Tennant Collection

I also did managed to find a UK release, also however none of these collections are in Blu Ray.

u/exlonox · 6 pointsr/doctorwho

Only six complete season sets have been released, but the BBC is currently in the process of releasing a new Blu-ray season box set every few months. Here are the complete seasons that have been released so far:

Season 10 (Blu-ray; pre-order)

Season 12 (Blu-ray)

Season 16 (DVD)

Season 18 (Blu-ray)

Season 19 (Blu-ray)

Season 23 (DVD; out of print in US)

u/localgyro · 5 pointsr/doctorwho

You can buy the episode on Amazon or iTunes for a couple of bucks. That's what I did.

u/Bl00dlessX · 1 pointr/doctorwho

It depends. If you don't mind a book full of pictures, go for it. If you want a book full of information I suggest this

Edit: sorry for reposting this like 3 times. I forgot I could edit comments.

u/mugenhunt · 7 pointsr/doctorwho

So they have only recently begun to release complete season sets for older Doctors. There's one for the Fourth Doctor's first season, https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Complete-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B079PT1N7W, and one for the Fifth Doctor's first season, https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Davison-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B07GJ397JH/.

There aren't full complete season sets for all of the previous Doctors, so you'd have to hunt down individual DVDs.

u/EveryGoodNameIsGone · 4 pointsr/doctorwho

There are no "season" sets of classic Who, with two exceptions (seasons 16 and 23). Each season is comprised of stories that are usually 4-6 episodes in length (shortest is 1, longest is 12 unless you consider season 23 to be a single story), so each individual story is roughly movie-length as a whole. Because of this, the DVD releases are generally limited to a single story, sometimes two or three.

Also note that the BBC erased many tapes in the 1970s in order to reuse them/make room in their archives. Because of this, 106 episodes remain lost to this day, and as such there are a few stories from seasons 1-6 that no longer exist. Some DVD releases have animated versions of missing episodes to fill in the gaps.

There are also fan-made reconstructions that you can watch (the audio tracks for every episode exist, so fans have taken those audio tracks and placed still images over them to "reconstruct" the episodes), and the BBC has released the audio tracks as "audiobook" style CDs, with some of the original actors narrating action when there is no dialogue. (There are also some fan-made recons that use these audio tracks instead of, say, Loose Cannon, who uses the original, narration-free tracks, using scrolling text instead where necessary.)

The recons can be a chore to sit through, but if you can do it I recommend it. I did, and while it took me ages to get through the first six seasons, I think it was worth it.

I'm assuming you're in the US - I'm going to link you to Amazon.com listings for each story that has been released (there's only one or two that aren't on DVD yet) - THESE ARE REGION 1 (USA) NTSC RELEASES, NOT REGION 2 (PAL) RELEASES, WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL FORMAT OF THE SERIES:

(Also note that if there is an updated "special edition" release of a story, that's the one I'm linking to, as they usually have superior-quality video/audio restorations, particularly in the eras of the first three Doctors.)
