To expand on The Wizard of Oz, they released it on Blu Ray in 2009 with an entirely new HD transfer from the original negatives, definitely give it go even if you already have the 2005 remaster! There's also a really big edition that even comes with a watch lol. The new DVD edition is just the 2005 remaster again though.
The Sound of Music has a really nice HD release too, but it was filmed on 70mm and in good condition, so they didn't have to do that much to make it look good. It's also got a bigger box set version, but no watch lol. Both have an incredible amount of special features. I can't really think of another musical release that was as big a deal as these two, but if I do I'll just edit this post.

My Fair Lady's DVD is great because it lets us hear Audrey's actual singing on a couple songs, I'm hoping they'll have it as an audio track option on the upcoming Blu Ray. Singin' in the Rain is getting a big release next year, and an anniversary edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory later this month, something to look forward to.

I don't know if these releases changed anything or not, but they're sure awesome editions. I kind of think the success of the Wizard of Oz big set inspired the Sound of Music, Willy Wonka, and other big sets, but I can't say for sure.

There are no licensed bluray releases of the true original films. They are available on dvd though as bonus discs of the Limited Editions. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-Limited/dp/B000FQJAIW And a little loophole is that if the Limited Edition is the full screen version then the bonus disc original films will still be widescreen. There are apparently still some very minor changes to the original films like a couple random sound effects but I've never gone through and picked them out. Although I dont suppose it matters since there's apparently nothing to compare it to other than the original 35mm print. Apparently no home video was ever released of the original films as they 100% exactly appeared in the theater. So the story goes.

As for the bluray Special Editions of the original trilogy episodes 4-6 I actually prefer Empire Strikes Back in the Special Edition. Every single change I think adds to the story and is very well done. Episodes 4 and 6 special editions are basically pure garbage. Episode 4 has a reincorporated deleted scene which is interesting but very badly done although I think they did the best possible job. As a star wars fanatic I think the only thing worthwhile in the episode 4 special edition is that its now the first appearance of Boba Fett although just a cameo. Not that he ever has much more than that anyway.

And I could've swore there are actually technically two editions with added scenes. I swear I saw in the theater A New Hope that was just the THX Remastered Edition which still had one new shot of a few X-Wing Fighters approaching a planet and also put the rings around the explosions of Alderan and the Death Star. I can't find any reference to this though but I swear I saw it in Dallas at Northpark in 1995

This is the region free player I have. It's a pretty popular one and works well. It can be bought cheaper on different sites but I'm not sure exactly where, maybe someone else can help out with that. Generally you can't get them for as cheap as your basic bare bones player.

No, they are not illegal to my knowledge. They advertise blu ray players as "region free" on Amazon sometimes. As far as websites, you can always just go to the Amazon page for the specific country or find distributors you like in other countries and buy directly from them if they ship internationally.

I believe these are on sale till July 6th 11:59 PST. Check the series out during the 4th of July marathon on the Sy-Fy channel. It's a great deal for all 156 episodes as well as special features. There is a great extra of Rod Serling on the "Tell it to Groucho" show with Groucho Marx. Well worth the price admission.

  • Where do you live now? North Carolina
  • What is your favorite genre? I like films regardless of genre, but based on my collection, I'd say comedy.
  • First DVD I ever bought: I can't remember the first DVD I bought, but the first DVD I ever owned was Gladiator. It was a Christmas gift.
  • My guilty pleasure movie is: Out of the ones I own, The Return of the Living Dead, but I can't really say I have any guilt.
  • My least favorite movie I own is: That's a tough one. Probably GoodFellas but only because I have to flip the disc to watch the whole movie. I love the film and need to upgrade it.
  • My favorite director: It's a toss-up between Martin Scorsese, Sergio Leone, and John Landis
  • What I'm most proud of: My Twilight Zone Complete Definitive Collection
  • What I'm looking for: More money and better pawn shops in my area. ;) I'm not really looking for anything that is hard to find (a "holy grail).
  • Software/app I use to keep track: I use Delicious Library 2. It's sorting options aren't without flaws, but I love being able to scan the UPC on my movies and them being entered automatically. You can see my library here.

My collection doesn't include iTunes Store purchases, but it would only add a few films anyway. I can't really call myself a DVD/Blu-Ray collector, I just acquire things here and there. I bought most of the films for myself, but I sometimes buy DVDs for others and they get "left" to me, as you can see.

    Edit: Removed an extra "I"
u/hansorg · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I personally don't believe there will never be an "unedited" original trilogy legally released on Blu-ray. At least not while George Lucas still draws breath. I would suggest buying this and being happy.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Complete-Episodes-Blu-ray/dp/B003ZSJ212/ref=sr_1_1_twi_1_blu?ie=UTF8&qid=1427397610&sr=8-1&keywords=start+wars+blu

Because it's an awesome set. And let's face it. It's what the films are "intended" to be. Regardless of whether a vocal subset of the fan base agrees with those intentions or not.

u/bongobill9821 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

As everyone has already said, I highly doubt there is a dedicated site for collector's editions, but as Kirah has pointed out with her examples, you're best best is to find them on amazon, for most of them anyway.

I technically only own two. I say technically because I have the Spider-Man 2 Limited Collector's Edition, but also I have the Willy Wonka set coming in soon, but don't have it on me.

u/rib_eye_b · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

I have lots of great titles available for anyone starting a collection. Take a look and let's make a deal. Also have a Seiki region free SR4KP1 Up-Converting Blu Ray Player new in box for $100 + S&H. Shipping within the UNITED STATES only please.

u/dustin_slothman · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Ah wow! So is the 2004 worth having at all? Whats on the bonus disc? Are any of these worth checking out? There's a couple dozen different options

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B005F96UF0/ref=tmm_mfc_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=1511625322&sr=8-2

If you look at the one that's $21.99, it's about $28 with shipping and they state everything's in great condition.

> Complete with outer box, book, letters, golden ticket, pencil case, pencils, wonka bar eraser, and all discs are in excellent condition

May be worth looking at if it's too expensive elsewhere.

u/Whats_Water · 6 pointsr/dvdcollection

Gravity is also 14.99 today on Amazon. Lowest I've seen it since the release and definitely worth it.

Edit: Put the link /u/gutpocket0 provided to benefit the prize vault.

u/Z0MBGiEF · 4 pointsr/dvdcollection

For those interested in the stand, I picked up a set of 6 on Amazon for $9.99. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XSJ2VCN/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The stands are awesome, they are adjustable, it will accommodate different sizes as needed so it will even work on larger cases.

u/SuperWoody64 · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I don't have it yet but I think Miller's crossing is in the coen box set. It's on sale very often at Best Buy.

$21 on Amazon

u/beertastic · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

I would tread carefully reading Amazon reviews. For one, they combine DVD/streaming/Blu-ray reviews all together, so it's not always obvious which release you are reading about. Even more confusing when titles get a 2nd Blu-ray release.

Plus most Amazon reviewers don't know what they are talking about when it comes to this sort of thing.

It's been quite awhile since I've watched my Blu-ray copy, but I guarantee you it looks better than the DVD. I sold my DVD copy years ago, so I won't be able to give you a comparison. Here's a caps-a-holic comparison between German Blu-ray and US DVD. I don't know how the German Blu-ray compares to the US Blu-ray, but there are some color differences between the German Blu-ray and the US DVD. You can see the US DVD is acceptable, not great, even for a DVD. Not to say I'm blown away by the Blu-ray screenshots either.

Have you considered this set for $20? Each movie comes in it's own case. Not a bad deal for $5 a movie. I bought it years ago, and threw out the box/sleeve because I thought the brain/head thing was ugly. Worth mentioning the Fargo release is the older (non-remastered), first Blu-ray release and Blood Simple has a new Criterion release. That may influence your decision.

u/charlesp22 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Damn, I traded that version to my brother for this version. Looks like he got the best of me on that deal, just from a dollar value perspective.

u/DrDoak · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

Well, I detailed what's in the Blu ray set here I know that there are other versions where Lucas has altered parts of the original trilogy about 3 times now... I guess it depends on which one you might want. I have this version which adds some changes that were made on a third VHS release about 11 or 12 years ago. There's also this version but I honestly don't know much about it.

EDIT: formatting

u/Neil_deGrase_Tyson · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Saw it after buying. Best deals right now for USD conversion are the Indiana Jones collection, and this Star Trek Stardate Collection. I'm going to buy this Deer Hunter 40th anniversary exclusive edition and some Disney 3Ds.

u/OGSoley · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

If Hammer films are what you want, your best bet is probably to buy a cheap region-free player and buy this set.

u/wonkarers · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I'm assuming you're referring to this one? It is reasonably priced, especially in comparison to some of the OPPO players people have recommended to me in the past. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to research it a bit more after work.

u/vanteal · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

$2 per single dvd = $14 and the star wars comes with 4 disks, episodes 4 5 6 and a bonus special features. This set of movies is also remastered and has the added scenes....It apparently sells for $190 at amazon http://www.amazon.com/Trilogy-Empire-Strikes-Widescreen-Edition/dp/B00003CXCT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370019270&sr=8-1&keywords=Star+wars+special+edition+dvd So I dunno, I'm guessing $80 is fair.....

u/GramercyPlace · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I also recommend Atlantic but a different model: Atlantic Oskar Adjustable Media Wall-Unit - Holds 756 CDs, 360 DVDs or 414 Blu-Rays/Games, 21 Adjustable and 6 fixed shelves PN in Espresso https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058O8GRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EQmSDb87SFXHX

My dream is 3 of these with one in the middle and two of them perpendicular to form a little movie cave.

Amazon UK: Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures [Blu-ray] ~$20
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003AQBVRW

u/therealjshaff · 4 pointsr/dvdcollection

These are from the UK Pixar box set, which curiously seems to have gone out-of-print?

The good news is that they appear to be worth some money now. The bad news is that this release was region B locked, so unless you live in the UK or have a region-free Blu-ray player, you won't be able to play these.

u/NuffBS · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Just looked on Amazon real quick, I'm sure you can find it else where for cheaper, point being it's out of print so now people are milking it. Blade Runner 5 disc

u/slayster · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

I'm taking over the new releases from charlesp22 (with permission) so he doesn't have to do everything here, so now every Friday we'll have a look at what is coming the following week.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides seems to be the most popular this week, I've yet to see this myself. The "Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy" seems a little excessive though. There's also a nice four movie treasure chest edition as well. Also The Goonies on Blu-ray, but it looks like the same as DVD version presumably with a resolution upgrade. Finally as a Sci-Fi fan I have to mention "The Captains - A Film By William Shatner", I look forward to seeing this when it gets a UK release.

In the UK this week (17th) we've got Green Lantern, Pulp Fiction (BD), Jackie Brown (BD), Bones (S6), Nightmare On Elm Street 1-7 (BD)

Also, if you're a fan, there a worldwide release of Star Wars Clone Wars - Season 3 and a boxed set of seasons 1-3.

u/tehskanksta12 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Your link looked weird. I am guessing maybe you posted it from your phone and its a mobile link possibly? Anyways here is the link for people not on their phone :)

u/mimurph1 · 8 pointsr/dvdcollection

if you don't care much for Spartacas, you can get the same collection here [blu-ray] for about $35, it's region free

u/GoAvs14 · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

They look kinda like this: Wal Mart

edit: Amazon

u/curtistalls · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I picked it up in the blu-ray box set, it was on sale for like $30 total at the time. Now it's even cheaper. You can check it out HERE.

u/Cyanides_Of_March · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Buy box sets from directors you like, Coens. Sometimes cheaper than buying them separate and you get the box for display purposes.

u/adamsandleryabish · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

okay so then I was backwards you will want this set

u/offensive_user_name · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

This may be another option. Probably about $45 shipped to the US, but there's no Sparticus or Dr. Strangelove. Also one of the special feature discs listed there is missing.

Probably nowhere near as attractive packaging, but definitely a lot cheaper.

u/XtrmeReddit227 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Picked it up from Amazon! It's not too bad but a little flimsy.

u/Max_W_ · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

I think it is region a/b/c/ and not just B region.

u/SepticReVo · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Blu-ray editions of Frozen, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Gravity, and Anchorman 2 are all $13 on Amazon as well.

u/Elfman72 · 5 pointsr/dvdcollection

Blade Runner - The Final Cut Collectors Edition. This set has the making of documentary "Dangerous Days". It is a great watch and really speaks to how classic film making and in-camera effects is a dying art with all the use of CG now days. A lot of blood sweat and tears went into the making of this film.

u/AWayOut · 6 pointsr/dvdcollection

There's actually 3 extra discs of special features in the 9 disc Star Wars complete box set (not 6 discs).

Canadian

American

u/kcwatne · 6 pointsr/dvdcollection

They were limited editions when they came out. It was these editions:

A New Hope

Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

u/Duffadash · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

It is indeed! It's a British DVD release called The Ultimate Hammer Collection. The "Ultimate" part is dubious though, as it is in no way, shape or form complete. (For example it contains only the third, fifth and sixth Dracula film, the fourth and sixth Frankenstein, and the fourth Mummy film, the third Quartermas film, and none of the Karnstein Trilogy.)

This is of course because of distribution rights. It is still a decent collection, although I have noted that very few of the discs seem to contain subtitles.
