That's outstanding!!! I'm so glad to hear that it was plug and play for you.

if you're curious about picking up the sonnet breakaway puck, give the gigabyte RX 580 gaming box a look first. In a package about twice the Puck's size, the RX 580 gaming box houses a more powerful AMD GPU with twice the VRAM. It also sells for $100 less than the Puck. Just like the puck, it comes as a prebuilt package that just needs to be plugged in. I use this enclosure with a NVidia card and I love it.

GIGABYTE Gaming Box RX 580 8G Graphic Card eGPU (GV-RX580IXEB-8GD) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CCK527Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_VxA6CbRECBZXR

u/sovereign007 · 3 pointsr/eGPU

How much is cheap with regards to the card? You can get a brand new "mining" RX470 8GB that has a single DVI output for 130$ (assuming you are in the US). While the RX580 is about 20% more powerful, being able to connect the eGPU directly to the monitor provides a boost, so you should end up with better performance overall. If this is about the same price you'd pay for the RX580, it might be a better option.

A brand new, normal, RX580 is 190-200$ on Newegg right now as well.

The AORUS Gaming Box RX580 is 389.99$ after rebate on Amazon, including both card and enclosure.

Finally, if you do get the cheap mining card, you'll need an enclosure: The Power ColorGaming Station is 179.99$ as open box on Newegg. A brand new one is 199.99$. This is the cheapest fully-featured (87W charging, and a good PSU to support nearly any card, and even Ethernet and USB expansion) eGPU enclosure currently available.

Ok well then it's pretty easy -- get yourself one of a number of TB3 eGPU enclosures and then get yourself a big honkin' expensive graphics card (I recommend a RTX 2080 Ti, because money is no problem, right?). You'll definitely see a performance boost. Take a look at this.

EDIT or you could do this and be done with it.

Hi Escape_Pilssken!

Recently I have been looking into building a eGPU for my dell m3800 precision laptop. I Reddit searched the Akitio Thunderbolt 2 external PCIe port and your build post came up. I use my laptop for CAD and can run games at medium settings (GTAV, 720p, 45FPS) however I have trouble running any game more intense than GTA. My computer has a thunderbolt 2, so thats a start and i have been looking into other parts. Now I see you use it for mac but have read it does work with windows. As of now this is my shopping list..... Akitio,

http://www.amazon.com/Akitio-AMZ-T2PC-TIA-AKTU-Thunder2-PCIe/dp/B00LTAUTHE/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458307550&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=akiitio

Power supply,

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1GNV44JSQF1C20V1ACSH

PCIe risser,

http://www.amazon.com/PCIE-Powered-Flexible-Extender-Bitcoin/dp/B00GUKRX6S/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1GNV44JSQF1C20V1ACSH

and most importantly, GTX 960

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Overclocked-GDDR5-Graphics-GV-N960IXOC-4GD/dp/B0167OW8M0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1458308437&sr=1-1&keywords=gigabyte+itx+960

Is this all I need? am I overlooking anything? I assume the akitio comes with a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 2. I am not the most tech savy when it comes to hardware so i just want to make sure im not missing anything. Also from what you can see will this card fit or will i have to leave it outside the box?

Thats all I can think of now, so thanks for our help!

Most thorough guide I have seen thus far.

Although... How does one tell which gen of mini PCIe they have?

I have a samsung 700z7c-S01UB which as far as I can tell no one has a build for yet

It has this

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Centrino®-Advanced-N-6235-6235ANHMW/dp/B009SJTSWU#Ask

wifi/bluetooth in its mini PCIe slot if that helps

Also, has anyone ever tried desoldering the iGPU (x16 connection in my case) and DIYing that into a eGPU connection?

Thanks for all your help! I am trying to see if it's at all worth it to hook up a GTX 1070 eGPU for VR dev

also you said that an eGPU can get 70-95% of the GPU cards processing power, is that based on bandwidth and connection type?

\^ $200 I've bought one of these and it worked

https://smile.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-Graphics-IceStorm-ZT-T20600D-10M/dp/B07MHR1Z8H/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2809LZNVAFD1J&keywords=rtx+2060+super&qid=1567402305&s=gateway&sprefix=rtx+2060+s%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-4

\^ 2060 super can be found at $360 and performs as well as a gtx1080 with added features such as ray tracing tensor cores and thunderbolt out for single cable VR

Buying anything less than this and your price to performance is gonna fall off and you'll just wish u stuck with whatever graphics are in ur laptop

it's actually small and portable and pretty good after the firmware updates - fan noise is no longer so annoying that I would replace the fans. The only thing is USB bandwidth still seems to be limited - but it's working fine for USB HDD and Xbox wireless adapter etc for me. Just Oculus complains and asks me to use a different USB port, so I guess the full USB 3 bandwidth isn't available.

All in all, it's a great box, especially for the money.

u/hijewpositive · 1 pointr/eGPU

Careful, because that amazon link you pasted is for an M.2 USB C enclosure, which only has a 10Gb/s throughput. You want an M.2 to Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, which has a 40Gb/s throughput. However, I don't know if just any enclosure will work. I only know that this particular one has been tested and proven to work: https://www.amazon.com/WAVLINK-Certified-Thunderbolt-Enclosure-External/dp/B07YB4DDRB

That PSU is going to be overkill. 600w is what you need to power an entire system. An RX580 shouldn't be pulling more than 220w in gaming. Plus, it's generally not recommended to hold an internal PSU externally. It's just not shielded the way external ones are. Better to be safe.

And it's Wall > Power Cord > Dell PSU > GPU > R43SG > M.2 Enclosure > TB2 Adapter > Laptop

u/genpfault · 1 pointr/eGPU

Bought 2m active TB3 cable from StarTech for ~$75 a year or two ago.

Works great on my Razer Core V1.

u/EquivalentAtmosphere · 1 pointr/eGPU

Oh, okay.

I saw this https://www.amazon.com/Akitio-Thunder2-PCIe-Box-intended/dp/B00LTAUTHE/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Akitio+thunder2&qid=1563918555&s=gateway&sr=8-2 and all over youtube, it says you can use it. It shows in the title "Not intended for the use of graphics card) so what exactly does that mean?

And also when I asked Apple Support they said that the T3 to T2 is like if you have a T3 (on your mac) and you have something that's T2, you can do T3 -> T2. They said that if a device is T3 and you have T2, it won't work that way (afaik).

I looked at the https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-AORUS-Gaming-Graphic-GV-N1070IXEB-8GD/dp/B073PYMG3G?th=1 Aorus 1070 and value-wise it seems like a great price. NVIDIA drivers are the biggest question mark: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/117854/en-us

If you are trying to game on a macbook, use windows bootcamp. These links will help you. You already have an RX580 so all you need is the enclosure. go with a breakaway box.

https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Breakaway-Thunderbolt-Expansion-GPU-350W-TB3Z/dp/B072L9QTZT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549175166&sr=8-1&keywords=sonnet%2Begfx%2Bbreakaway%2Bbox&th=1

I bought the 350W to save cash, and i just have my laptop charger plugged in when using the egpu instead of having the box charge my laptop.

u/BattleManyako · 1 pointr/eGPU

Hi, I have Xps 15 9570 top but without 4k display. Can you use Vr with this system, and do you recommend this eGpu?

Edit: Is this the one you have bought?

u/varyl · 1 pointr/eGPU

I had been eyeing this one but do not own it yet, will mark this as somewhere to come back to afterward and enter into the google sheet. This had been a huge concern to me, been surprised at how hard it is to find real world testing data for these cables.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H5QF2TK/

u/Kyleez · 0 pointsr/eGPU

Yes, I will run it on Win10 Bootcamp.
So I just need to buy this + this one and connect it to the display?

u/knowledge1010 · 1 pointr/eGPU

This isn't that much more then I paid for it if you're interested:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B076PZ6PRK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I paid roughly $817 CAD + tax

u/dms31986 · 1 pointr/eGPU

I was looking for more of a plug n play option in possible.

Link of what I'm looking at.

https://www.amazon.com/Embedded-Thunderbolt-Portable-External-GV-N2070IXEB-8GC/dp/B07NDZV2WC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=egpu&qid=1564262768&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Then using a adapter for the thunderbolt to USB

Is this option possible?

u/digitalhomad · 1 pointr/eGPU

I bought this longer cable on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BKSQ87S/ and it did not work. I am using the original cable that came with my Razer Core X

u/BlackEric · 2 pointsr/eGPU

I was using an Anker hub with PD that I had bought for a Chromebook. It ended up being annoying because the built in cable to connect to my 2019 MBP was too short. I have my MBP on a stand and it would hang awkwardly in the air. Here is a link to the old hub: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Adapter-Delivery-Charging-Chromebook/dp/B07DD8BLJW

I had this laying around and decided to start using it again: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Gigabit-Ethernet-Converter-Support/dp/B014ZOJX7W

Instead of using an adapter for the existing USB A to B cable I bought a new skinny cable instead: Cable Matters Type-C USB 3.1 Type B Cable (USB-C / USB C USB B 3.0 / Type-C USB 3.1 to USB B ) in Black 3.3 Feet https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UXKTJE0

This setup gives me 3 high speed USB 3.0 ports and gigabit Ethernet. Plus it's small and easy to pack up. I like that the new Cable Matters cable is detachable (of course) and it's extremely thin. Kinda cool.

u/TechByTom · 1 pointr/eGPU

If you need a long cable (6.6ft), this active one delivers 100w and a stable connection. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074JZVD2M/
I've been using it for a couple years with a NUC and then my Lenovo T480. No issues.

$49 is about as good as you'll get.

u/PadreFalcone · 1 pointr/eGPU

I don't think it makes a difference, but I've found it hard to find a longer cable with 40gbps. Especially here in Denmark, where most amazon sellers don't send to!

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Thunderbolt-Cable-Chainable-Passive/dp/B01N9J47EG?th=1

u/sfjohansson · 2 pointsr/eGPU

So it came out at about 2400MiB/s, on the 2m cable Belkin cable ...and if thats normal and as good as its gets...then probably no reason to dig out the shorter cable an try if there is a difference.

u/anotherbozo · 3 pointsr/eGPU

Have you looked at the Gigabyte Aorus Box?

It is the cheapest quality option I could find. Haven't bought an eGPU yet but this is top of my list.

u/Madmartigan1 · 1 pointr/eGPU

You're correct, it uses standard PSU connectors (24 Pin).

The specific form factor is 1U, like this one.

u/amZNeZk1 · 1 pointr/eGPU

Such thing is under development by Mantiz https://www.reddit.com/r/eGPU/comments/66augw/mxm_egpu_the_portable_egpu/

For now this is the smallest available on the market enclosure + built-in card https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-AORUS-Gaming-Graphic-GV-N1070IXEB-8GD/dp/B073PYMG3G

I got mine from newegg but they are no longer selling it (this also ships to the UK from amazon US)

u/begentlewithme · 2 pointsr/eGPU

Did you buy it from the same company? Try a different brand. I also had the same problem as you and ended up going through the same research process, and I ended up purchasing this 6 feet TB3 cable that's worked for me since and never had problems with. I also use the Aorus gaming box, the 1080 variant, which shouldn't make a difference.

u/sjc723 · 1 pointr/eGPU

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Graphics-Windforce-GV-N2070GAMING-OC-8GC/dp/B07JC1TM5V/ref=dp_ob_title_ce $500 for rtx 2070 that's bang for buck

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CCK527Y?&tag=egpu2017-20

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073PYMG3G?&tag=egpu2018-20

for some reason all the rx 580s and 1070s are used, but they are in 350-400 buck price range

I'd stick away from the 1080s they are all way too overpriced with used ones at $800 when the brand new ones were $650. They were everywhere about 2 months ago but I guess they stopped stocking pascal because of turing.

When i was deciding this same question, i was advised to get the non-chroma core x and a separate usb 3.0 hub because the GPU data floods the ports with its information so if you had your keyboard and mouse connected to the same bus they would have a lot of input lag as your key presses try to fight through the onslaught of information from the GPU, whereas using the usb 3.0 hub uses a different section of the computer and doesnt have any input lag.

So if that is important to you, go with a separate hub with the non-chroma core-x

Edit: I bought the non-chroma core X with this hub.

u/systm117 · 1 pointr/eGPU

I just recently purchased the Sonnet eGPU Breakaway Box and am currently using it with a XPS 15 (9550). I have only played OW, PUBG, and hearthstone, but what you're saying I think is more heavily dependant on the game; at 1080p I can get 144hz no problem.

u/Addyct · 1 pointr/eGPU

I mean, I understand the TB3 cable requirements, but why did you spend $100 on a cable that's only going to live on your desk? There are much cheaper compatible options. Hell, even the overpriced-af, name brand Belkin version was only 80 at full price retail, and only 70 now.
