The core material EDC, to me would be knife, light and cellphone. But cool keychain gidgets are really nice too.
So I'd say if you have a knife, a good flashlight would be next, then a backup knife and light (one is none, two is one). I like a multi-tool or SAK for my backup knife, and a keychain light for my backup torch.
(In case you're curious, after that I start considering footwear, gloves, hats and other clothing.)
(Sorry, I'm feeling a bit lazy, so you'll have to live with bare links.)
This one is pretty popular for keychain use: www.amazon.com/iTP-A3-EOS-Flashlight--Upgrade/dp/B006K5C2EG/
Fenix has single AA and 123 powered lights that are well regarded and compact:
AA: http://www.amazon.com/Fenix-E11-Compact-Lumen-Flashlight/dp/B005GW8UC2
CR123: www.amazon.com/Fenix-Compact-140-Lumen-Flashlight/dp/B005CWRB44
There are a lot of other brands worthy of consideration too, of course (Fourseven's mini, Jetbeam, Klarus, Zebra, just to name a few).
There are also a lot of much larger but more capable flashlights out there.
Keychain stuff is always nice:
I use these sliver grippers way more than I thought I would. The convenience of always having them around is unparalleled: http://www.amazon.com/UNCLE-BILLS-SLIVER-GRIPPER-TWEEZER/dp/B001KMSUA4
I've been thinking of getting this, I'm a little leery about that much stuff for so little cost though: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A5E5IK
I love this style of keyring, but it's way cheaper on eBay: http://www.amazon.com/Vigilant-Gear-Aircraft-Cable-Ring/dp/B006ZSP1PA
Little one-piece keychain tools have become really popular, and I really like having a little prying and screwing tool always present.
The Gerber Shard is cheap but probably at least worth what you pay for it: http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-22-01769-Shard-Keychain-Tool/dp/B002ZK45IQ
This one has a bit more functionality, and is made of the magically delicious titanium: http://www.amazon.com/Schrade-Chain-Tool-Seatbelt-Cutter/dp/B004PQJ1QO
Keychain multi-tools can be good.
Here's one from Gerber: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006M9NIDO
Supposedly the build quality isn't as good as Leatherman's though: http://www.amazon.com/Leatherman-64010101K-Micra-Multi-tool/dp/B000JCN0FG
I'd also recommend looking for a glow in the dark lanyard.
A pen you can EDC is another "you're surprised how often you use it" item. I have an Inka and it's definitely alright, though a bit fiddly: http://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Inc-Inka-Pen/dp/B001E6R6EM/
The biggest competitor is the classic Fisher Bullet Space Pen: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Space-Pen-Bullet-400B/dp/B000WGD13U
Something to write on is nice. I'm a real child of the digital age, but I still like having an analog recording medium on me. I prefer Pentalic's pocket size books to Moleskine's. They're a little thicker, but they have a flexible cover, and are usually cheaper. Here's one: http://www.amazon.com/Pentalic-Travelers-Sketch-3-Inch-4-Inch/dp/B0025TZ35Q but I don't know if it's ruled or grid or what. I also prefer a bright color cover to make it easy to spot.
Continuing on the writing stuff matter, a sharpie and/or a metallic (ink) sharpie are nice to have. You can get sharpies with stainless steel cases too, which feel nicer to hold, and you're a little less likely to forget somewhere.
Black (dozen): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006IFEP
Stainless Steel: http://www.amazon.com/Sharpie-Stainless-Permanent-Marker-1747388/dp/B001V9LQLG
Metallic: http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-39108PP-Metallic-Sharpie-Permanent/dp/B00119QWCO
I think everybody should carry some sort of bandanna. I carry an off-brand buff (tubular bandanna) and an olive drab shemagh.
I like to carry a small baggie of what I call MacGuyver goods. Paracord (bound up in a hanayawa right now), some gorilla tape and electrical tape wrapped around a card, super glue, a sewing kit, zip ties, twist ties, rubber bands, safety pins, binder clips, and a few 1 quart ziplock freezer bags. (Like hell I'm finding links for all of those.)
Yet another "surprising how useful it turns out to be" item is a small mirror: http://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Featherweight-Mirror/dp/B0047QV44O/
Whistles are useful for warning people of fire or danger, or calling for help, so I like to carry one: http://www.amazon.com/Fox-40-Whistle-Breakaway-Lanyard/dp/B00544UJC6
A monocular is fun to have on your person. This particular model is really great because of its super low minimum focusing distance, which lets you use it as a sort of loupe. In regular mode it's good for looking for house numbers or your car in a parking lot, that sort of thing: http://www.amazon.com/Brunton-Echo-7x18-Pocket-Scope/dp/B000FKMTBS
I think that's all I could come up with off the top of my head.
Items are as follows:
Then we are kindred spirits. If I'd had more disposable income when I originally started looking for a bag, I would already have the Adapt pack in hand.
I love everything about the Adapt pack EXCEPT the total lack of organization inside it. It wouldn't even be so bad if there were better options for organization outside of it, but with the shock cord, it doesn't leave much usable space for that without hindering the shock cord.
There are three options that I have come up with, although there may be a better one I haven't yet realized. Here are the drawbacks of each. The pros should already be obvious to you since you've decided you like the bag.
For internal storage, I'm not seeing a lot of options that really stand out to me. Nothing that says, "That's perfect!". There are a couple options out there. The longer I look the more I'm finding as well.
From your statement, I'm guessing you're looking for something to fit inside of the rear pocket that would attach to the loop field in there. Maybe externally on the loop field on the back? Well, I'll address the inner field first.
Maxpedition Hook and Loop Mini Organizer
Maxpedition Hook and Loop Medium PALS panel
Also, check out here for some more ideas. Apparently Skinth can make any of their pouches with a hook field on the back!
For the small loop field on the outside of the bag, I'd love to get something like the Maxpedition Hook and Loop Zipper Pockets which would fit nicely up there I'd think (instead of patches).
You could also slap something like a Maxpedition EDC or a Fatty on the side of the bag instead of the rear to retain use of the shock cord.
You could always move the shock cord around though if it's an issue. I was contemplating the usefulness of the cord itself one day, and figured if I ever wanted or needed it on a bag that didn't have it, I could pretty easily source some and run it through any MOLLE/PALS webbing that was on said bag.
As far as internal organization. The best thing I've seen are dapper style organizers. Blue Force Gear makes one that seems to be pretty popular and could be used in conjunction with any Velcro pouches listed above to create a highly customizable, easily swap-able, inner organization sleeve. Since I don't know how well they'd fit on either of the fields mentioned above, this is the place I'm going to also mention Mountain Ridge Gear who also makes a few nice looking velcro backed pouches. The Grid It is another option, although I've heard mixed reviews from people who've tried them. Also, I think it might be a hair larger than the internal size of the Adapt pack. I may be wrong there though.
My biggest issue is that all of these options add up in cost and weight. You end up spending a lot of time sourcing these things and waiting for them to arrive. It drives up the cost of the total bag, and starts to pile up shipping costs if you don't know exactly what you want (buying one at a time) or have to shop several vendors. At what point would it have been better to have just gotten a bag with more organization to start with? Is it a pro or a con to have everything removable?
Basically it comes down to preference. If you absolutely have to have the Adapt pack, do it! The quality is right up there. Once you get it decked out with your pouches you will certainly be able to say it is 'Yours'. However that versatility and modularity will likely hit your wallet a little harder than a bag that can do what you need it to do right out of the gate.
Now personally, I agree. The Adapt pack is basically what I am looking for. However, in order to get it where I will ultimately want it, I'm likely looking at another $50-80 in added pouches, patches, and dappers. Wheras I could take the loss of the ability to sling the bag, and the better color options, and grab a 5.11 Rush 12 and be able to do essentially what I want to do with it without having to buy anything extra....except maybe some shock cord.
For a couple more things about the Adapt pack check this link.
For a little more info on the Blue Force Gear Dapper and what you can do with it, check out this link
I'm 18, I'm a student and a IT guy (pretty good one too). I like fixing stuff
What I put in my pockets
Verizon LG G3 An oldie but goodie, been weilding this phone for a little over 2 years. Currently is running Cyanogenmod 13. Also has a 3rd party Anker battery inside which are a bit nicer than the one the phone comes with
Buxton Tri-Fold wallet Very sturdy and nice feeling wallet. My grandparents got it for me half as a joke as my last name is Buxton. Holds a second battery for my phone in addition to all the money I dont have.
Keyring with 144GB of Flash Storage on it. Keys for my house, and assorted flash drives. 2 8GB and 2 64GB. One 64GB is for my portable build of Ubuntu, the other is for Storing files on the go. One 8GB is for Hirens Boot CD, and the last one doesnt work and i'm too much of a lazy ass to take it off. Plus it looks cool.
Feild Notes I think everyone on EDC has one of these. Super handy. Above it is my handy Pilot G2, my personal favorite pen. Ive been using that one for about a year and it shows it with all the chew marks at the top.
Random Skullcandy Headphones.
Things I put in my bag
iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit Probably the best toolkit for computer repair, has literally every single screwdriver tip imaginable, plus some really handy tools for things like phone and tablet repair
2016 Razer Blade A wonderful gaming laptop, that can actually be used in the real world. Is very thin and light considering what's on the inside. Holds a 5ish hour battery life, so I'm not tethered to a wall all the time.
Steam Controller Wonderful for Gaming on the Go. It's a very good controller for PC Gaming, but only for certain people. First person shooters would totally suck on this controller (but then again they suck on every controller), but works very nicely for the games I play.
Logitech MX Master Probably the nicest mouse I have ever used in my life. Fits super well in my rather large hands, and the thumbrest button, speed adaptive scroll wheel, and horizontal scroll in addition to wonderful tracking and bluetooth support make it my favorite mouse of all time.
Cable Matters Thunderbolt Dock Very handy for a laptop that doesnt have Ethernet or VGA output, and an Extra USB port never hurt anyone either.
USB 3 & Micro USB OTG, SD Card and Micro SD card Adapter. Can plug into either standard USB or Micro USB, works as an adapter for a Micro SD or an SD Card. Also useful for a computer that doesnt have an SD card slot.
Microfiber cloth. The Razer Blade is a fingerprint magnet, so this comes in handy quite often.
At the moment I'm running:
TEC Centipede - Titanium ruler that's about 8.5cm in length. I measure things irregularly, but not enough to warrant a full tape measure which will take up more pocket space. Feels super well made.
Leatherman Micra - Just got it, and I'm torn on how much I like it. Whilst beefy, the scissors sometimes flex whilst cutting thicker items (so it goes between the blades laterally). I've never had this problem with my Classic SD, and may end up moving up to a 74mm Victorinox like the Executive for the sake of the bigger scissors.
Boker Vox Access Tool - Titanium prybar with a carbide glass breaker on the end. I've come from the SD Titanium Prybar which was bloody useless for nail pulling due to the groove literally being a 'V' without any guiding for nails, and the edge of the bottle opener kept digging into my hand when I used it. Although for it's follies, the tip lip is very thin (yet sturdy) and can get between thinner crevices than the VAT; I also drove in a couple of nails with the SD, and in seeing if I could unscrew a half in one with the VAT, I chipped the guiding groove for the nail puller (not severely, but it was kind of disheartening as I literally just bought it and didn't think it was much of a stress test).
Kershaw Pub - Technically this isn't on my keys, as I put it in the 'snuff pocket' in my jeans, it's beefier than the VAT for box opening, and the blade is about the same size as a Stanley blade. It's a bit of a different design and great for fidgeting. Not so great for fidgeting when people see you, but fun all the same.
I've currently retired:
The SD Ti Prybar - See above, a great little prybar, hampered by a frankly stupid decision to put a bottle opener on it. NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A BOTTLE OPENER.
Victorinox Classic SD - A present which I absolutely love, however I'm in the pursuit for something 'beefier', although the scissors on this are second to none for all the little odd jobs I've had over the years.
Uncle Bills Sliver Grippers - Brilliant tweezers for splinters, however the first day I put them on my keys, and then sat on my keys, I hadn't put them in the holder right and they stabbed me in the arse. These tweezers have never been on my keys since.
Resqme Car Escape tool - Had it on the keychain, realised I'd only ever use it in the car, and now I keep it in the glovebox as I have the glass breaker on the VAT.
Leatherman Squirt PS4 - An absolutely fantastic multitool let down by a shit pair of scissors which have a lot of play between the blades. It results in a lot of rough cuts and ultimately spoils a perfect out of the box multi-tool. In the pursuit of better scissors and a lighter set of keys, I've currently retired this fantastic piece of kit.
Leatherman Brewzer - I absolutely loved this little prybar, but it broke in half when I tried to get a little shelf stud out of a bookcase, and it just shattered my confidence in the product to the point that I can't be bothered sending it in under warranty, as I know I'd never use it again.
Gerber Dime - I bought this at the same time as the Squirt PS4 because I couldn't decide between them. After taking them both out of the packing and comparing them side by side one after the other, it was instantly obvious that the Leatherman was just the better fit, so this was retired pretty much instantly and was gifted within an hour.
True Utility Keytool - First keytool I ever had and it was great for years! Practically invisible and as I only used it for the file, the mini screwdriver, and the thread cutter, it was fantastic. Never had an issue with the quality, and never had the need to take it off the key it was on, I only stopped carrying it because I don't use the type of key it works with anymore, and don't want to carry it round for the sake of it when I have so many other options. Great little buy though.
I'm probably going to buy:
Victorinox Manager - This is pretty much the best multitool for what I really need, and it has a pen. It's just 58mm and I really want a larger pair of scissors, however it has all the tools I've used recently, and it has a pen!
Another Prybar. As soon as I find a beefy titanium 80mm~ straight prybar which doesn't have a bottle opener on it, and instead has another useful purpose I'm going to get it. Hell, even if it doesn't have a secondary purpose I'll probably get it as well.
Bags
-or-
Gadgetry
Accessories and Miscellaneous
Ok here goes. Pocket breakdown.
Front right pocket: Phone
Clipped to edge of front right pocket: Knife
Clipped to edge of back right pocket: Pen
Back left pocket: Wallet
Clipped to edge front left pocket: Flashlight
Also clipped to front left pocket: Keychain
Now for my flashlight philosophy. Phone lights are just kind of fine but they really stink as flashlights because they aren't very bright and can't throw more than about 15 feet. My $10 Olight i3E keychain light can throw like 100 feet, which is not all that far. My sidewalk from the road to my house is longer than 15 feet and I like to be able to see a good ways in front of me when walking at night. My main flashlight (Emisar D4) has adjustable brightness so I can put it really low in a movie theater or something when I need see to go pee but not disturb anyone, and I can also put it on full brightness to turn on the sun in any given direction if I need to see far or see a lot of stuff. Mostly it's just plain easier to grab a flashlight clipped to your picket and press a button than it is to pull out your phone, unlock it, swipe the quick settings onto screen, and then click the flashlight button.
Knife philosophy: I carry a dedicated knife because it's easier, faster, and more comfortable to use than any multitool. It always stays clipped in the right hand, tip up position so I just pull it out, deploy the blade, and start using it (and that all takes like half a second or less). If I tried doing the same with my Leatherman Squirt I'd have to pull out my keychain, find the Squirt, open the blade with the nail nic and then reposition my hand to start using it. That requires about 3 seconds (6x as long) and BOTH HANDS. Often when I need to cut something I'm supporting the thing with one hand already so I only have one hand free to get my knife.
Tweezers: take a look at these. You might be able to add them to your keychain: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001KMSUA4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1523632099&sr=8-1&keywords=keychain+tweezers&dpPl=1&dpID=41qJZ3wCLJL&ref=plSrch
I hope this helps!
I would recommend a flashlight, and small multitool.
Flashlight
I would recommend the Fenix E05 | [Amazon Link] $20.13 for a very small light.
Multitool
The Leatherman Style | [Amazon Link] $16.79 is my most used item on my keychain because of the great scissors and minimal toolset. It has none of the tools I don't ever use. If you're looking for a more versitile toolset, look through the remainder of Leatherman's great micro-multi-tool lineup. Try to stay away from Gerber products if at all possible.
Flash-Drive
A flash-drive can be useful as well, but it's hard to find one that is both small and durable. I did a lot of research on which option to buy for quite a while. The grail of USB flash drives is the PQI Tiffy because of its incredible speed and durable housing. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to find for sale, and it's also super expensive. I went for the Kingston Datatraveler | [Amazon Link] $10.40, and it's working very well for me.
Fire
I've rarely needed one, but many folks want to carry a fire-starter with them, and there are some small options for your keychain. The Exotac NanoStriker $23.50 is a ferrocerium-based striker, and the True Utility FireStash [Amazon Link] $16.23 is a simple, tiny lighter.
Suspension
Finally, it's nice to have your keys hanging in a comfortable place in your pocket, and not in a bunched-up heap at the bottom. Definitly consider grabbing a P-7 suspension clip $12+shipping. I waited a while to pull the trigger on mine, but I don't regret it.
Another option would be the Obstructures Pry/Open tool $32. It serves as a pry-bar, which you don't yet understand how much you might use after you start carrying one.
Additional Information
Here's my setup today.
Here is a great post by /u/goretsky about where to buy one-handed multi-tools like Atwood, etc.
---------------------
P.S. It's great to have a color-scheme for your keychain. It looks fantastic.
Left to Right, mostly:
Green Cards - I switch this out with other cards pretty regularly, but it matched today. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ESWPAKU/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_R-0TDbZEN6C0N )
Slim Wallet - It's super thin and it attaches to my phone. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P4J55NV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9msGDb54PTKM2 )
Watch - It's durable and in my opinion doesn't look too bad for the price. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BosGDbN06048V )
Wireless Earbuds - They are dated so they aren't the best anymore, but they are still pretty good. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07582VVJR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QnCDDbV5X5EQY )
Multitool - It doesn't have a knife so I take this to school. It's not the best, but it does small things great. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058RX9NU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_Rc1TDbRPMMDB0 )
Flashlight - For the size, it is really bright. It doesn't last forever, but it is rechargeable. I recommend it for something small. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GQRJLDP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_6g1TDb65T465P )
Knife - This sub knows this knife. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-Bugout-AXIS-Lock-Knife--98607 )
Necklace - Totally normal carbon fiber dog tag. ( https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Panchenko-Dog-Tag-Folder--29966 )
If anyone has any questions about any of this stuff, leave a comment and I'll do my best to respond. To clarify, the knife goes in my pocket and I put on the necklace after school.
Thanks for taking the time to check out my post! Have a good rest of your day everyone!

Seconding the flashlight and multi tool.
I carry my flashlight with a pocket clip just so it can be attached to the brim of my ballcap if I need light and both hands. Much easier than fumbling with my phone.
Also, if I’m in a situation (ie: truck broke down, power’s out, etc) I don’t want to waste precious phone battery for a flashlight, which uses a ton of juice. Gotta save those sweet amps for mobile gaming, or emergency comms.
I just picked up a Thrunite Ti3, very happy with it. It’s very small, study, great output, multiple settings, and the clip is amazingly (surprisingly) strong.

Also, a good multi tool is a must for me.
I have several, a Gerber and a Leatherman, as well as a half dozen cheap no name models, but I carry the Victorinox SAK Tinker daily. Fits well in the coin pocket of my jeans. It does have a blade on it though, so be wary of that. If you don’t go with the Tinker, another Victorinox would still be great.
My Leatherman has been with my for well over a decade, and is my daily work carry, but I’m a firm believer that they don’t make them like they used to (mine is a 2002 model).
The Gerber is a forever backup. It was a gift, and my least favorite. Feels cheap in my hands when I use it, but I know it would get the job done if necessary. It stays in my range bag normally.
As for the Tinker, here’s a link;

Good luck and happy hunting.
Just a few notes:
From Top Left to Right.
Gearward Compact Survival Cord Mini, 25’

Tucked inside the folds of the cord are: a micro neodymium magnet, a pen spring, a small safety pin.

Have actually used this for: fishing some ladies keys from a grate at the school before the janitor could show up. Also repaired a neighbour’s skate lace with the cord.

Have actually used this for finding a lost earring in a dark movie theatre. Thought I would use it to find the locks on my house and car, but everything is pretty well lit.

A new addition. I like the full sized Phillips screwdriver bit. Has a flashlight. Used it to open the bottom of my son’s new RC car’s battery compartment. Has a knife, too. Good for package opening. Not much else.

To light cigs, mostly. Haven’t needed to start any urban fires. But… I wrapped over it a thin layer of [To-Go Gorilla Tape] (https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-6100101-2-Duct-Tape-Black/dp/B01M2AAGTZ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484274817&sr=8-1&keywords=travel+gorilla+tape) and generic electrical tape at the base. [I interwove the electrical tape through a generic (plastic coated) paperclip so that it acts as a keychain. Haven’t lost one yet.]. I used the duct tape recently when a poster fell down at my kids’ Christmas recital and I was able to peel a few pieces off for the teacher to put it back up.
[Mini Sharpie Marker]

Used it recently to write a nasty note to a jerk who dinged my car. Also to get an autograph on a menu of an actor you’ve probably never heard of, but who was big growing up in Toronto.
[Generic Folding Travel Scissors]

Sharper than I expected. I recently used this to save the day when my son refused to wear his new Christmas sweater for a family picture because the tags were itching his back. Snip. Problem solved.

A good way to keep it all together. These clips don’t lose their… clippieness.
So, I love this little EDC. Will continue to use it, thought I don’t see many ways to improve it!
I have a few options for you that I hope will help. One, you could try a slimfold wallet from here: http://www.slimfoldwallet.com/
They are incredibly slim and still have really decent capacity. And, being soft and slim, you can carry in the same pocket as your iphone (I do, and I was practically obsessive about giving the phone a dedicated pocket for protection before).
For keys, try a true utility key shackle, it's the part actually attached to the keys in the image: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007IOHPRW?pc_redir=1395983890&robot_redir=1. I have one and I love it. Add to that a keychain clip for the top of the pocket (think like a pocket knife style clip, and you free up some serious pocket space: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0035R3N1I/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1396236800&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40
Combine some of these options with a pocket holster that gives your gun a wallet like imprint and stop worrying about the imprint at all! I do all three. I carry an LCP in my front right pocket in a wallet style holster, and people really think it's just a wallet.
Sorry for the links not being hyperlinked, I'm on a mobile app. I hope these options help you or inspire you to think of something that will work for you!
I'm 28, in the Navy, and here's what I'm usually carrying.
Maxpedition Pocket Organizer
NM Flag patch
Old coin given to me a while ago
Sparrow's Tuxedo Pick Set It's a great set, and a cool thing to learn. The linked set has a different case, I guess they don't do the leather cases anymore. I also had them put rubber handles on mine when I ordered, makes all the difference.
USB cord that came with my phone
Tekton 4" adjustable wrench
Zebra pen. Forgot which specific one...you probably know it though, it's one of the popular choices on this sub. My main pen I keep in my breast pocket, the Fisher Bullet. That's the best pen I've ever had, hands down.
Fine point Sharpie
Rite in the Rain notebook. It's ok. I much prefer Field Notes Expedition which I also keep in mind that breast pocket. Just wish the pages were perforated.
Streamlight Microstream. Awesome little light, and the AAA battery it takes lasts quite a while.
Chapstick
ThermoWorks surface thermometer. Sorry, can't find a link. My buddy gave me this last Christmas. Comes in real handy in the field, to see if my JetBoil is too hot to put away. Also, I dunno, I can tell you if stuff is hot or cold or whatever. Neat.
I was in a similar place as you. Here's what I got:
I wanted a small EDC that I could fit into all my pockets. It's not for everyone, but it's worked out really well for me. I use the pen almost daily, and even though it's only my third favorite in terms of writing, always having a pen on me is awesome. The Mirca has been great for just having a decent pair of scissors and a pocket knife. The other features will pay for itself when the time comes. The notebook I keep in my back pocket with the pen. It goes with always having something to write with, I now have something to write on.
I really should post my EDC soon, seeing as this sub was what inspired me to pick up those items.
Well, most of them, but ok, I'll bite. I really like the Bellroy Note Sleeve that I replaced my old, very fat, wallet with. I'm trying to settle on a knife carry right now, debating whether I want to pair my much-loved-but-I-wish-it-were-bigger Rambler with a larger knife or not. The Rambler really is great, though. It punches way over its weight class, which is half the problem - it covers everything I really need day to day, but I like to have a knife that fits my hand a little better. If you have trouble with things balling up in the bottom of your pocket, the Tec P-7 suspension clip solved that quite well for me. I guess that's about it, really.
If you want to still keep your work keys on a separate ring from your house keys, you could try something like the Free Key System.
Otherwise, you could try something like the Keysmart, and put your 5 keys in that, and then just have that, the car key, and the fob on the ring.
I personally use the Keysmart, and it's been great so far. I've had mine for a few months already, and it's held up great. My best friend has had one for several years, and his is also in great condition.
I also recommend a suspension clip, I've been using this one by Keysmart recently, so I just drop my keys in my pocket but hook them on the top of my pocket. That makes it easier to pull the keys out of your pocket, and also keeps them dangling in your pocket as opposed to bunching up at the bottom.
Hope this helps!
I know this will get buried but I have decided to revamp my whole EDC.
/u/ieatedjesus I have taken the plunge on the Wallet you have recomended. I hate when a product has no reviews or I can't do research about it but whatever. I'm also super stingy with money so this is a huge deal for me lol ($42 with engraving)
As for the pen, I have decided to get a Fisher Space Pen $15. I have 3. Now I will have 4. (also bought a clip $5) ((also bought fieldnotes $10 for the wallet))
/u/odomandr I have decided to go with that knife $16. Nothing sexier than a good stone wash and minimalist design. I also need a knife. No idea about the quality but today I have decided to trust a total stranger on /r/EDC
/u/Ryl4nd99 Thank you for the great idea of a post! I hope to post again when everything comes in. I decided to add/replace my edc with the items above. I also carry a muthafuckin Casio as well as an Olight s2 Baton along with dollar store chapstick. Hopefully I can keep you updated or make a new post when all my goodies come in!
Sorry for the wall of text. Thank you for reading.
Multitool: Leatherman Skeletool - $41.03
Knife: Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight (S110V) - $114
Light: Thrunite Ti3 - $20
Total: ~$175
Edit - I got the Skeletool for $20 when it was on sale at Home Depot and the Manix 2 on massdrop for $98; so you could get everything for $138 or possibly less if you look for deals.
Edit2 - How about some reasoning:
> Skeletool - this is my favorite multitool because it has only the tools I would forseeably need on a day-to-day basis, and leaves out the tools I associate more with camping (saw, can opener). It rides the pocket comfortably with the secure pocket clip. The carabiner-style clip is clever, because it works double-duty as a bottle opener. The screwdriver and bit/holder gets the job done. My favorite feature, though, is that the (liner-lock) knife can be deployed and folded away with one hand, without unfolding anything else. The most common complaint I hear is that the pliers/wireclippers aren't spring loaded. (And that covers all the tools on the Skeletool!)
> Manix 2 Lightweight (S110V) - this is my most frequently recommended knife because it is:
> 100% ambidextrous
> super lightweight for its size: 2.9 oz (82g) for a 8.03" knife (blade length: 3.37")
>* low maintenance: riveted construction means you can't take the knife apart even if you wanted to. S110V steel is known for its edge retention (I think... I actually don't know anything about bladesteels)
>Thrunite Ti3 - I don't know much about flashlights but I've had this for over a year on the same AAA battery cell and it's going strong. It is tiny, very bright and easy to use.
The Kershaw Skyline is currently on sale for $30 from Amazon; it's usually a bit over $40.
The Skyline is an excellent knife at its regular price and even better for $30. 14C28N is easy to sharpen and holds its edge longer than other budget steels. The knife is extremely light, barely over 2 ounces. The blade geometry is excellent for cutting things (it's surprising how many knives are not), and Kershaw's warranty is one of the best in the industry.
Possibly relevant to you: its pocket clip holds it in place quite securely.
For those interested;
Got everything for about $100. I really love the Leatherman, who knew something so small could have such great quality standards, it feels so solid. The Fenix is crazy small and light, couldn't believe it. Finally the Tenacious is a great knife for under $50, also great build quality and man is the clip tight, that thing isn't going anywhere.
Okay, I'll bite. These are all items I currently carry in my EDC organizer that are under $10.
• Uncle Bill's tweezers (definitely not in the everyday use category, but superb for that "damn I need this" category. e.g. wife with metal filing splinter)
• 16 oz Nalgene (just started carrying mine and glad I did. e.g. I need to drink more water)
• Mirror (sure you can use your phone, but I've found it handy a few times. e.g. at work place before meetings; to pick that food out your teeth after lunch)
• Toothpicks (to pick said food from teeth before meeting)
• WD-40 pen (cuz... WD-40. e.g. squeaks and stuff)
• Hand Sanitizer pen (because germs. e.g. after a BBQ Brisket Quesadilla for lunch)
• Gorilla Glue super glue (again, used a few times, but in a "save the day" type of situation.)
• Plastic or Metal Collar Stays (I always seem to forget collar stays, so I pack them in my EDC organizer)
• $10 (in cash) (I've forgotten my wallet once before—but had my EDC organizer in my laptop bag—still got to eat lunch that day)
Yes I realize 4 of my items specifically mention "lunch".
Before the list, I would just like to personally thank all of you on the EDC sub. Many of the things I use everyday, I bought after seeing them here and reading your reviews and recommendations. I love seeing the diversity of the tools and stuff you all use. I'm including links to where I got my things just to save anyone the time searching.
Here's my EDC on a budget...
Phone: OnePlus 5t (8GB/128GB). Recently replaced my aging Nexus 5. No phone has ever been perfect in my eyes, but the 5t is awesome and lightning fast, and it doesn't have a bunch of bullcrap and bloatware.
https://www.oneplus.com/5t
Knife: Gerber Suspension. I have several knives, but this is the one that goes with me everywhere. The pliers, screwdrivers and scissor get used more than the blade.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EDPT9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Watch: Timex Field Chrono. Inexpensive, accurate and reliable. Plus I think it looks cool.
https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8
Flashlight: J5 Tactical V1. Got this to replace my Mini-Mag LED that constantly flickers with even the slightest shake or bump. I used to love Mags when they had incandescent bulbs. They really f'ed up their LED tech though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V7T1YRQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Field Notes: I also do drone photos for real estate and I use this as a flight log.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034KDEMO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Other stuff: Cheap glasses because I lose or break them about every 6 months. Chapstick, Levis wallet, car keys, G2 pen, wallet survival card ($1 at Walmart) comes in handy.
Not pictured: Altoids to cover up the coffee breath. Ringke Fusion phone case.
There are tons of great options, the Parker Jotter I can definitely recommend. I've never had any leakage issues with the stock ink cartridge it came with but I also normally switch it out for a Fisher Space Pen refill.
Other good metal pens that aren't too expensive might be a Cross Click which is my current edc with a Fisher Space Pen refill in it which is great for signing receipts and quick things like that. I use it at work to give to customers to sign their receipts.. I like it because it is skinnier than the Parker Jotter, however, it is easier to accidentally click in your pocket whereas with the Jotter you have to use an intentional amount of force to click it.
Another one (or two) would be the Fisher Bullet Space Pen or the Cap-O-Matic Space Pen. The bullet is really quite compact and the Cap-O-Matic is a regular sized pen.
And if you're really worried about ink leakage in your pocket then you can get something like a Lamy Swift which has a mechanism so that when the tip of the pen is extended, the pocket clip retracts which makes it impossible to clip onto your pocket. One thing to keep in mind with the Lamy Swift is that it comes with a rollerball refill which is incredibly smooth but it puts out more ink than a regular ballpoint so it has a longer drying time and can smear on receipt paper.
Flashlight my dude, you won't be able to go back after carrying one.
Going by the rest of the stuff you carry i'd say a small AAA light that you can either attach to your keys or clip inside a pocket.
A couple of recommendations:
To clip on to keys: The Olight i3 EOS. 1xAAA 90 lumens, 45min runtime. Simple twist on/off, one mode, plenty bright for most daily stuff. If you want something multi-mode still good for your keys, the Thrunite Ti3 and Lumintop AAA Tool are honourable mentions too.
To clip to your pocket: The Streamlight Microstream. 1xAAA 45 lumens, 2.5hr runtime. Solid pocket clip and push-button that lends itself to be a really good momentary light but can be clicked on for continuous use. Really solid light, inexpensive, Tried and trusted by a lot of the EDC community. Honourable mention goes to the Streamlight Stylus Pro. Almost the exact same light but longer. 2xAAA, 90 lumens, 6 hour runtime if you don't mind the weight of an extra AAA on you.
Definitely a Microstream, best bang for your buck and plenty of light for most of what a keychain light is needed for.
If you want a twisty switch, though, I really love my Maratac AAA. Been going on 2 years now and kicking hard as ever. HOWEVER, since they raised their prices, I don't find them to be as much of a bargain as they were. The only Maratac light I'd spring for would be one of the specialty ones (like their newly introduced brass version, or the copper one - especially now that they've finally updated them to Rev.3).
I'd probably personally go for something like the Thrunite Ti3 if my Maratac ever dies. About the same price (a little cheaper actually) as what I paid for the Maratac when I bought it, and my buddy loved his til he lost it. http://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-Max120-Lumens-Flashlight/dp/B00LUO028U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426784161&sr=8-2&keywords=thrunite+ti
Sorry guys, I thought this comment would show up but it didn't so here's it again!
Info and such.
Picture one is my work (garrison, not deployed) EDC and picture two is my normal EDC.
notebooks
So I do carry much more stuff with me while I'm working but I'm quick to shed it when I get back to the barracks.
Hope you enjoyed and I'll be happy to answer any questions about my getup!
You can get quite a few of those together for $25, but obviously different places. I would map out what you use the most:
Notepad, pen, lighter, pliers, scissors, screwdriver, flashlight are all great to have.
http://www.amazon.com/eGear-PICO-Zipper-Light-Blue/dp/B001SAM0IQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344376840&sr=8-1&keywords=pico+light are a better choice over the streamlight. You can often pick up Micras for $15 or less at Target or Menards on clearance/sale
I prefer the Meretac, but http://www.amazon.com/Fenix-Flashlights-E01FL-Compact-Flashlight/dp/B002YLTU3Q/ref=pd_sim_hi_12 is a good option
http://www.amazon.com/Vigilant-Gear-Aircraft-Cable-Ring/dp/B006ZSP1PA/ref=pd_sim_sg_66
http://www.amazon.com/UNCLE-BILLS-SLIVER-GRIPPER-TWEEZER/dp/B001KMSUA4/ref=pd_sim_sg_79
You can find a lot of Amazon items... I'll go through my purchase history and see what else...
DODOcase Durables Wallet for iPhone - Just started carrying this a few weeks ago when I found out my SwitchEasy Tone case was still allowing grit in and scratching the back of my phone. So far so good.
Fisher Space Bullet Pen - Always heard good things about this pen, it was smaller than I expected but that ended up being a good thing. Very happy with it.
Leatherman Micra - Perfect size for a keyring multitool, I can't deal with a ton of bulk in my pockets and this gets the job done. I'm considering modding some of my house keys on to it soon.
Standard VW keyring with keys, the USB dongle is a password key for my work laptop, nothing special.
Nice Walther, nice knife. You could go with a standard carabiner or an S-biner, both available at Home Depot, both like to stay closed. I use a Freekey system that hangs from a standard carabiner, myself. Keybars and Keysmarts are pretty popular around here and they seem like they are worth looking into.
[This (Keshaw select Fire)] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IVPKOU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.6azybTTQWBH1) has easily been the most useful knife I've owned. The blade itself is good, not great, but certainly good enough for everyday tasks. With typical knives I found myself using the blade to do things that I should have just gone and grabbed a screwdriver for and would end up chipping the edge.
However if you just want something with a good blade I'd recommend [Kershaw Leek] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009VC9Y0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SlbzybWEZ68XA)
Gerber EDC Zip. Absolutely tiny, but pretty darn useful. Rarely do I need a larger knife. Hard AF to sharpen though, I have to take it apart. http://imgur.com/a/bwGIO
Spyderco Bug (12) Too small. Must be held like a full-size folder, which just doesn't work at this size.
Gerber EDC Zip (7-12) Love it. Thick enough to hold with a pinch grip, and small enough that I don't have to give any consideration to its weight. Sadly I have to take the blade out to sharpen it.
Rotring 600 0.5mm Mechanical Pencil
Sandisk SD Card
Sorry for the lack of info fellas. I posted the pic last night and totally for got to add the specs.
Hello everyone!
I had been wanting to post my edc for school and felt since the semester is almost over, now would be a great time. I am a computer science major and have been carrying this with me for several months now. Also, pls excuse the obvious line down the middle - i merged two seperate pictures together. So here is my edc from L>R, T>B.
I do carry all of this with me. It's not too heavy as I've tried to minimize the weight of the items I did decide I wanted to carry.
Some bonus pics are below:

I have a ProTac 1L-1AA and like it a lot, but I don't think it would be that good to clip on your pocket for day to day use, maybe look into a single aaa light such as the Thrunite Ti3 or Ti5 whether you prefer a tailswitch or twisty. This form factor is big enough to be useful but small enough to not take over your pocket.
If you're set on Streamlight I like my Protac 1AAA for its size compared to the 1L-1AA, but it is still much bigger than the Thrunites and a lot of other single aaa lights.
I've lurked here for a while and thought I should make my first post.
I'm also looking for a better wallet similar to mine. I've checked out the Hitch and Timber Card Caddy, but can't justify the price. Any recommendations?
Any other feedback is also welcome :)
Small multi-tools (Pick one and goes in wallet front pocket)
Flashlight (Goes in wallet's front pocket)
Pens (Pick one)
Wallet
Watch
Earbuds
Phone (Had to Badly Photoshop it into the pic)
On key-chain
Knives (Just my favorites. I usually just carry whatever knife I'm feeling that day)
Edit: not sure why photo uploaded with potato quality
Items for outside the classroom
Biggest thing to carry is a bottle opener
Cheap Keychain Bottle Opener
You don't want some expensive bottle opener because you'll be passing it around alot and you might forget to ask for it back
BIC Lighter
Kershaw Cinder
BUT preferably swiss army knife classic
SAK Classic
or the rally with a bottle opener
SAK Rally
you sacrifice scissors for bottle opener
wallet
dont get a bifold wallet those are out of style no (no offense to anyone who still carries them) but a simple slim card holder is alot better and sleek
Things you need in the classroom
Best Red Pens a must for note taking
I wouldn't get the blue one uniball because its a dark blue almost black
So get these instead
BIC blue pen
Most "EDC" notebooks are expensive and offer very little sheets of paper. You could use one as an assignment pad but something with acutal dates is better so once you get your syllabus you can right down all the assignments during the first week.
Note books I would just go to walmart. You can get five subject notebooks for $2 now during their back to school special. Where ever you buy notebooks take advantage and buy for the spring semester because prices are only this cheap in aug/september.
Not your usual edc recommendations but I wasn't rolling in dough early on in my college career and rather let people borrow a cheap pen and let them keep it then stress about getting my pen back when I let the next person borrow it to sign in.
your edc should be what you like to carry and use
Pockets
Keys
That's pretty much it. Any questions feel free.

I have this Fenix as my keychain light, and it's excellent quality for such a tiny form factor. it's fairly bright, though not nearly as much as the eagletac mentioned above. however, if budget isn't really an issue, I can't recommend the Muyshondt Aeon enough. [this review] explains how it's basically the perfect EDC light when budget isn't an obstacle.
Kershaw Select Fire. It's my EDC. It's a folder knife first and foremost, with a flip-out 1/4" bit driver, and the capacity to carry four 1/4" bits. When you flip the screwdriver part out, it also exposes a bottle cap opener, which is a nice touch. Mine has the half-serrated blade. Most of the ones I see don't have the serrations.
It comes with two each standard and philips drive in anodized black, however I replaced two of them with bits that I find myself needing frequently (An allen driver that fits almost everything on my bicycle, and a T25 security Torx, because I find myself needing a T25 for some strange reason or another, very frequently (servers at work, my big ham radio at home).
The pocket clip can be mounted left or right, but due to the screwdriver bit holders, you're limited to "tip down" configuration. Not my usual mode, but in the 3 years I've had this trusty thing on me, it's come to not bother me much. Highly recommended for anyone whose main multi-tool needs are a great blade and some real, usable screwdrivers.
get something not so expensive for your first knife. Here's why:
-Get used to it. Carrying it around, deploy and fold, cut fruit at work with it (see your co-worker's faces when you pull it out). Doing this will let you get use to having one (unfortunately, you will probably lose it).
-Use the shit out of it. cut paper, cardboard, pencils, test it out on thin twigs, branches etc.
-Sharpen it. I don't mean with some cheap easy way of doing it like with a sharpmaker; use a sharpening stone, learn the angles.
-Learn to respect it. No matter how careful you think you are, you will eventually cut yourself doing something you feel is the safe way. You will have a new appreciation for this knife.
I recommend either of these knives (learn the different ways knives can be deployed) http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Tenacious-Handle-Folding-Plain/dp/B001EI7578/ thumb hole deployment
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-1660-Onion-Folding-SpeedSafe/dp/B0009VC9Y0 - speedsafe
http://www.amazon.com/Ontario-8848-Folding-Knife-Black/dp/B0013ASG3E - thumbstud
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Skyline-Knife-Textured-Handle/dp/B001CZBDF8 - flip
Find how the knives also carry in your pocket (left pocket, right pocket, tip up or tip down).
These should be your first steps into getting and owning your first folding knife.
The main compartment is usually pretty easy to keep organized if you use the internal pockets. Grid It organizers are handy for smaller things like chargers and dongles, and Vaultz Mesh Pouches are handy for keeping similar items together (I like the red one for a mini first aid kit).
No information included about your desired price range so I'll just throw out a few suggestions. G-Shock is a solid choice - my favorite is the GW6900 as it is 5 buttons (dedicated light button), solar powered, and sets itself every night to the atomic clock. A slimmer option is the GWM-5610 with the same features except for the dedicated light button. These also have non-atomic non-solar versions for about half the price DW6900 and DW5600 which both come in around $45. These are classic models and won't draw unwanted attention.
If you're looking for something analog, while I hate to recommend another Casio, the MDV-106 dive watch is really hard to beat for 40-50 bucks. Water resistant to 200 meters, real functioning diver's timing bezel, applied indices, rubber strap... it's highly regarded at this price point. Good luck!
If you have a few bucks lying around, the easiest way to answer this question is to have you buy a decent knife and see for yourself how much better it is. For a nice folder in your size range, the Ontario Rat1 would be a nice start...it's only $25 (which is a very low price for a quality knife), its 3.5" blade is big enough to do most things you'll need it to do while also being legal to carry almost everywhere (in the US), it's supposed to have a buttery smooth pivot action, and it has a decent blade steel (AUS-8) as opposed to the who-knows-what in a typical gas station knife. And yes, the steel alloy does make a lot of difference, a good blade will hold a sharp edge for longer, be tough enough to withstand some abuse, be flexible enough that it doesn't shatter easily, and unlike crap "stainless" steel it will actually remain rust-free under reasonable conditions. The heat treatment of the blade also contributes to these traits, and I can guarantee that Ontario does a better heat-treat than whoever made your $7 gas station knife...which probably didn't receive any treatment. If the Rat1 isn't your style, Kershaw makes a bunch of budget-friendly (~$30) knives that are also pretty highly regarded, something like the Cryo which has spring-assisted opening or the very sexy Skyline which isn't assisted opening. And if those aren't to your liking, then Spyderco makes a couple budget folders, one of them being the Resilience which has a bigger 4.25" blade and nice G10 handles, you may like that one for the bigger size. Might wanna check the legality in your area though...
So yeah, apart from working better, a nice knife also has a much smaller chance of failing and cutting off your finger, which is the main reason that I cringe a little bit when people use bad knives...I just don't want to see someone who doesn't know any better get hurt by a knife they thought would work fine. Unfortunately, I do see plenty of knives like that around r/EDC, but maybe I just hang out in /r/knives too much.
Another great option is the Fenix E01 or E05. They're both great single AAA lights, and tiny too!
All 3 are amazing value and are altogether just over $100. :)
I'm pretty sure it's a classic G-shock. I just got one for Christmas and love it so far. Casio Men's DW5600E-1V "G-Shock" Classic Digital Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GAYQKY/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_wliOub01XGH85
THIS ONE is on my Amazon wish list. If it's good enough for pilots, should be good enough for us!
A brass key hook of choice and the FreeKey System is cheap, space efficient, and pretty quiet. As a bonus, you can operate your hanging car key fob without having to reach into your pockets.
Thanks! Right now I have the Nite Ize but the part that attaches to the keychain is a little too big for my taste. Other than that I absolutely love it.

First post, any questions or suggestions please feel free. Thanks guys!
they are worth it, just dont buy some mega expensive 1000000 lumen job.
you shouldnt need to spend more than $50 to get a really nice one
cellphone lights drain your battery really fast, and dont illuminate nearly as well as a proper flashlight
if you dont carry a bag then i would recommend a single AAA keychain light, like these
if you carry a bag too(I do) then you can carry a larger(better) light.
I carry a Klarus XT1A (single AA, 150 lumen)
my buddy carries a LedLenser M14(4xAA 220 lumen), which is complete overkill, but he likes it.
edit: bulletpoints
I've got two of these - in different sizes - I have one for my EDC bag and one for travel.
https://www.amazon.com/Cocoon-CPG10BK-Grid-It-Organizer-Black/dp/B002HU27UW
I'm a huge fan of them - and you can get them in different sizes to fit your needs for storage and what bag to put them in and stuff. Plus the hold a multitude of different things so you can fit a lot of stuff on there. I have an external battery that I use to charge my phone and ipad with so I usally put those USB chords on this thing in addition to wall plugs for the cables too in case the battery runs out.
Olight S2
HP zbook g4
G-Shock Classic
Sabre Red with Clip Holster for backpack pocket
Travelambo RFID wallet
Some basic first aid stuff I carry is pictured too, foldable mini splint, first aid kit, pocket resuscitator, and a RATS tourniquet. I HATE the RATS, pretty garbage but my old tourniquet has somehow disappeared… plan on replacing it when I have the money. Also, I fucking love local beer!
Previous post, I've changed a few things now and I'm constantly updating! Looking for a nice slim black hand stitched leather bifoldwallet at the minute.
Skillcraft B3? It's a three in one type deal with black ink, red ink, and a mechanical pencil+eraser. Sounds sort of cheesy but it actually works really well and feels quality. I write quite a bit for my job and it is really handy to have red ink on hand, even if you don't need it often.
Here's a few I've seen

Or, you can just buy all the things you would want on Amazon, it'll come in 1 or 2 boxes. Here's a few choices to put together a "kit"
This or this for flashlight.
This This, or, This For a multitool depending on the size you want.
This or This for knife (Note: I am not a knife person, I have a Squid and I like it and I've heard good things about the Kershaw Chill)
Exotac FreeKey System
Honestly how does a person even convey the sheer ability of Knipex pliers wrenches? I can never work without them now. I have the 6/7 1/4/10" and love them all. I think I am going to get another 6" for the glove box. I ran across this the other day, have not bought it yet but I thought I would share: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IVPKOU/?coliid=I2DBWNRFFC16BG&colid=1STK45ZF72T31&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
I picked up a Kershaw Skyline when I was in college and it's a great knife. I have gotten some better knives since then but it's still probably my favorite for simplicity and pocketability.
Link
They are just about perfect. I have 2 of them that I use regularly. Excellent for regularly used supplies and tools.
So this is what I have with me usually when going to work. Which is a 1h journey by high speed train, crossing an international border.
Link to highres picture What addition would compliment this EDC?
Kershaw and Spyderco are good relatively cheap brands. If it's for EDC, the Kershaw Skyline might be a good fit.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I would like to add on to what he said about the knife. When I was in high school (a public school in California) I carried a small swiss army knife like this during the day and a cheap Jeep knife that i left in my car during school. if you buy a knife, for a first EDC just get a $15-$20 knife. upgrade when you find it necessary
I have a ThruNite Ti3 that I EDC. It's a pretty powerful little light that runs off 1 AAA. It's small enough to fit in my jeans' fifth pocket, and cheap enough I won't be pissed if it gets lost.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I carry a Fisher military space pen with me religiously, but cool pen nonetheless.
Uncle Bill's Sliver Grippers are very popular and have a good reputation: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KMSUA4/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_n1HgDbFWNEYCD
Note that the CountyComm versions appears to be either the same or similar. Titanium offered as well: https://countycomm.com/products/tweezers-tick-splinter-removal
Some of the best: Quantum D2, Something from the Sunwayman Ti series like this, maybe a Maratac 123 light if you can find one
Pretty damn good: Prometheus Beta QR, Foursevens Atom AL, ThruNite Ti3, Fenix E05
Still good, but cheaper: Streamlight Nano, Fenix E01
I've been thinking about getting an edc pocket knife. Is the manix 2 really worth the extra 60 compared to something like this kershaw? I'm about to start researching myself, but you seem pretty knowledgeable.

Alright. Why didn't you like the Tenacious, if you don't mind me asking? Knowing would be a good way to limit my recommendations.
Some fan favorites in that price range are the Kershaw Skyline at the cheaper end of things, the Spyderco Endura at a bit more, the Buck TM Vangage Pro in S30V (one of the best deals around, IMO, because S30V is usually far more expensive) and the Cold Steel AK-47.
OP, I'd be cautious getting any of the bigger knives, if I were you, because most people don't like the weight and size in their pocket. I carry the previously linked Spyderco Stretch myself, but that's been called "too big for EDC" by many a person before.
http://www.amazon.com/Exotac-002825-FreeKey-System/dp/B00AQ664H6/
Super useful IMO
If it helps I've been using a dohickey for the last few months and I love it.
As far as tools go, here are some good starting points:
Gerber Shard
Leatherman Micra
If you go the flashlight route, I hear good things about the Fenix E01 and E05.
I have a SAK Classic SD on my keychain, but if you are looking for just a knife, the SRM 605 is hard to beat. It has a good liner lock, and for a very small knife, provides a solid grip. Don't let the low price disturb you - it is just a very good deal.
Personally I have 6.25" wrists and this watch is just a tad big. G-Shock DW5600E-1V
You can find them cheaper in the US if you're from there. They're available usually all over the world. Just be careful when using Deet products (ex. mosquito repellent) since it eats away at the resin.
If you're looking for an analog watch that you can beat around I'd say this Seiko 5 SNK809. It will also fit smaller wrists not to mention its probably one of the cheapest reliable automatic watches available from a reputable company.
Again there are many straps for both watches and a few different colours.
Cheers.

Love my skyline! It's very thin in your pocket, holds an edge and is a very stout knife for the size.
I finally got my EDC down to a really slim and minimal setup. Nothing that I don't use on a daily basis. Basically a Pocket-dump.
Thanks for looking.
I just realized that the flashlight is the only thing that hasn't changed since I started carrying tools when I was ~17... It's like my Hobbes :3
The Maxpedition FR1, Maxpedition Fatty Pocket Organizer, Maxpedition EDC pocket organizer. All of these organizers are really good quality, and will last you a very long time, also they look cool.
One thing I'd suggest to add: Get a watch! It can be a cheap, very useful tool to add to your repertoire, like the [Casio MDV] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009KYJAJY/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492967162&sr=1&pi=AC_UL420_SR280,420_FMwebp_QL65)
Good question! I was thinking about the same thing today. I've had one of these for years. I'm definitely looking for a newer option.
I generally have either a SAK classic or a leatherman squirt on my keychain, both are tiny, useful and in no way can be mistaken for a weapon and they suit my everyday cutting needs. The other SAK I might take if I need it is a SAK tinker, I like SAK's as they don't look threatening when you use them and they are good pocketknives.
You just have to be smart about what you're carrying and if you don't have a legitimate reason to carry one then don't.
Maybe this? I’ve had one for years and it’s super reliable, plus it has no skulls 😂
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FIX126K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_59UYAbQGVZ9HG
I recommend the fisher space pen map-O-matic. It a really nice pen that takes the fisher space pen refills that last for ever and write in all situation.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisher-Space-Pen-Cap-O-Matic-Ballpoint/dp/B001E103CY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1458765853&sr=8-3&keywords=fisher+space+pen
I have the same bag, I use a grid it to keep stuff organized for easy access, it helps tremendously otherwise I would be constantly digging around the bottom
Leatherman Skeletool is a great item, which you should be able to get in that range. I got the upgraded Skeletool CX for under that from r/knife_swap.
If you want smaller try the Leatherman Style or Gerber Dime . The Style comes with scissor main tool or pliers.
Full size I’d suggest the Leatherman Wingman .
Suspension clips work better just attached like this.
Do G-Shocks interest you at all for work? Something like a DW5600 maybe? They're pretty much built for war.
Gerber Shard
If opening bottles is a thing you need it for over a knife, which was not the case for me, I got rid of this tool as well.
Simple but it works
This is what I carry now, after ditching my shard as well because there's plenty of ways to open bottles and tweezers are crazy useful.
Kershaw Skyline i love it. Used it before i switched to Benchmade

That is one of Casio's dive watches. Model is MDV-106. I think it's one of the best dive watches for the money, it's actually my daily beater.
However, it is quartz and glass is mineral.

Night-Ize DoohicKey. It's probably the best I've ever owned. [Here.] (http://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-KMT-11-R3-DoohicKey-Multi-Tool/dp/B00FIX126K )
P7 Suspension clip. It's like a pocket knife clip for your keys. Very minimal and allows you to keep your keys at the top of your pocket, without th bulging or sagging.
Overpriced yet worth its weight in gold once you start using it:
http://www.amazon.com/TEC-Accessories-P-7-Suspension-clip/dp/B00L75GRX6
I carry the Niteize Doohickey and it works great for what your describing.
I edc the Thrunite Ti3 (Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-Max120-Lumens-Flashlight/dp/B00LUO028U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469849865&sr=8-1&keywords=Thrunite+Ti3). It's ~$20, well made, small, and is ridiculously bright for its size.
I recommend that you ask over on /r/flashlight. They should be able to give you more recommendations.
It is this one reallly great for the price
Kershaw Skyline
Very light and thin, Great blade.
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Skyline-Knife-Textured-Handle/dp/B001CZBDF8
The Maxpedition EDC Pocket Organizer comes in multiple sizes and a few colors. I have the Fatty size and it's great for keeping all my little things together.
I have a leatherman brewzer, its barely larger than a standard key and it lays flat on my keyring. Also, believe me, if you're going to actually open bottles with it, you want it to be a thick piece of metal so it pops the cap off instead of just bending it. I have a gerber shard as well and it tends to bend bottle caps off because it is too thin.
Here's another similar thing, with slightly better ergonomics than the brewzer since you can quick-release it. If you can get past the "moving part" anyway.
Sorry for photo quality. First post ever on this so be gentle. Starting from top row, left to right:
Hopefully that all worked! If not, I apologize.

Maybe its just me but I cringe whenever I see someone with an Invicta watch. Get yourself a more reliable watch. I just picked up a nearly identical watch link for $45 bucks. I highly recommend it

I love it so far. Makes taking keys off a breeze. I like the way those other holders look (Key Smart) but I have oddly shaped keys.
Thank you! I'm kinda bummed its not a mildly industrial looking pocket clip. Anything in mind that would recommend? Currently considering pairing an H.L. Human Pelican Clip with a Free key System.
edit - Looking for a simple keyring that won't tangle, since I really only carry two keys, a Higonokami knife and a Yubikey 4 for some of my software dev stuff. Aside from that just a Nitecore SRT3 Defender and possibly some kind of Spiderco Knife since my other edc knife broke.
I have two keysmarts, but I actually use this now. I found the keysmart to be overly clunky when doing things like unlocking my front door.
Not the OP, but it looks like this Casio watch
I'd rather have one of these, but I can't justify the cost and the pilots aren't really leaving them behind like they used to. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001KKPGHQ/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A101X8HUDF83YG

I personally use nano clips. I will clip something onto the other ring, has always worked better for me.

Do you have any preference towards digital, quartz (battery powered), or automatic (mechanical)?
Uncle Bill’s Key Chain Tweezers are an inexpensive, convenient, and solid option if you go this route. I’m sure there are even nicer options, but I’m not the kind of person who needs premium tweezers on a daily basis
I've started carrying a Leatherman Micra and love it. I carry a yoyo everyday, so the tweezers and scissors get a lot of use. Different strokes/folks but I can't think of what I'd use small pliers for more than small scissors.
Couple of options off the top of my head.
I own the Freekey system and dig it for not destroying my nails trying to get keys on them, but for organization needs, you may want to go with the other two.
Right here. This one is a bit more like a standard ballpoint pen's size.

How about a keychain flashlight or pocket flashlight and a small to keychain multitool? Also I would never leave the house without a power bank for my smart phone. Having to charge from a wall outlet in a public area creates risk of forgetting the phone there.
