Assuming you are talking about R-Pi, v3b.

All 32 bit and lower works flawlessly. This includes but is not limited to Genisis, GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, PSX.

N64 is the most commonly discussed as it has a large library of great games that are also often 4x multiplayer. Most games work very well (e.g. Mario Kart), while some do not (in particular 007 Goldeneye).

Hardware:

  • Raspberry Pi 3 - $36
  • Samsung EVO 32GB Class 10 Micro SDHC - $11
  • CanaKit 5V 2.5A Raspberry Pi 3 Power Supply - $10
  • Addicore Raspberry Pi Heatsink Set - $5
  • AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable - 3 Feet - $5
  • Official Raspberry Pi 3 Case - $8

Total cost so far, $75. You can get a less expensive case that also comes with the heat sinks bringing your cost down to ~$65.

Cheap right? Well, the one thing that is going to cost you the most in any of these builds is the controllers.

    I like:

  • 8BITDO NES30 Pro Wireless Bluetooth Controller - $49 (x4).

When I first bought them, they were $36 each, and I love them. They work really well via the Pi's built in Bluetooth.

Another great option that works really well are the XBOX-360 controllers. Wired ones run you $27 each brand new, and wireless are $34/each, plus one adapter for the set.

In other words, four good controllers are going to run you $100-$200. Which is the bulk of most builds. In a childs-only build, I am considering either wired XBOX-360 controllers because of their awesome cord break-away feature, or going even less expensive with the $12 SNES clones, though that eliminates the ability to play N64 and PSX.

The screen tearing issue is SUPER exaggerated. I've put dozens of hours into the Pocket Go and VERY few games are actually affected by it, pretty much only games with super fast horizontal side scrolling. Racing games with mode7 scrolling and even full 3D GBA games look great. There is a little slowdown on the more graphically intense games, but shutting off the sound from the emulator menu always fixes it.

The display isn' is $10 more with more RAM and a better display. I' a $200 for a GPD XD, the Pocket Go plays thousands of games near perfectly for an insanely low price and I have no idea why it gets so much hate.

EDIT: So the new LDK is only $20 more with more RAM, a 60hz refresh rate and the same horizontal layout. I still think the Pocket GO has the better form factor and is the more handsome console, but I'm actually going to get an LDK as well for better PS1 emulation. Check out the LDK if screen tearing is a deal-breaker for you.

EDIT 2: A really great comparison of the 2 systems is on youtube, they each have their virtues.

I'd advise against getting the Hori left joycon, as it has many major drawbacks compared to a Nintendo one, namely

  • it has no internal battery, so it's handheld mode only
  • It constantly drains the Switch's battery while it's connected, something like 5% every 15 minutes even in sleep mode if it's anything like the JP and review units this was fixed apparently.
  • No gyros, so while some games may still have motion control aiming with it using data from just the right joycon, many will not work at all.

If you want a good dpad on the Switch, I'd recommend an 8bitdo controller like one of these, I have this exact one and it works great. It even pairs with 4 different devices, 1 per input mode, so I have it paired to my NES classic, Switch, and PC all at once and can pick which to connect to with a different button combo on startup.

This doesn't really answer your question, but I bought this

http://www.amazon.com/Kinivo-BTD-300-Bluetooth-3-0-adapter/dp/B005Z5HT2M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1409122715&sr=8-3&keywords=bluetooth+usb

To use Wii Motes on the dolphin emulator (Gamecube/Wii emulator). It works really well and was a simple plug and play for me.

According to this review, it works fine with PS3 controllers.

http://www.amazon.com/Kinivo-BTD-300-Bluetooth-3-0-adapter/product-reviews/B005Z5HT2M?pageNumber=2

"
This was a great purchase for connecting my Wii and PlayStation 3 Dualshock controllers. I used Touchmote drivers for my Wii remote to use as a gyro mouse and it connected easily. Using the remote for 3 hours had no problems with the connection dropping.
I used the Xinput DS3 Wrapper for my Dualshock and played from a distance of about 15 ft."

Oh me too man. Btw, would you mind taking a look at the micro sd/adapter combo i'll soon be purchasing? Id'e like to have your opinion on it. Like whether it will be capable of providing the same level of excellence that yours does. Id'e totally appreciate that opinion.

$35 is just for the Pi 3 itself. You can find Pi cases pretty cheap, like $7-$10. From there it's the HDMI cable (which you probably already have laying around), MicroSD card, and power supply.

It's powered over USB to outlet wart plug. 2.5a is recommended, but you can probably get away with 2.0a or 2.1a, which is more common. Or buy a full standalone power plug for it. Assuming you don't have a microSD card, 32GB is only ~$10 these days, and you can get a 64GB one for about double that.

So total cost might be around $50-75 depending on accessories and what you already have at hand versus what you need to buy. Still quite cheap for a retro emulation rig (and can always be repurposed as something cool like a firewall or mini-PC or something, since there are Linux builds for the Pi as well).

So for those bummed out about this and are looking for alternatives here are a few options

  1. build one yourself with a raspberry pi
I would recommend using a RPi2 or RPI3 rather than the zero.
check out these subreddits for more info

    r/retropie

r/recalbox (my personal favorite os for emulation)

    r/lakka

  2. use an android box for emulation

    amazon fire tv

    Nvidia shield tv

    Emtec gembox

  3. use an old laptop or desktop
look on craigslist for old computers you can usually find one under $50 that will work just fine
both lakka os and recalbox os have x86 ports that run fine on desktop
i also recommend a bluetooth adapter and a 8bitdo controller

  4. if your looking for something more portable putting homebrew launcher on a 3ds or 2ds works really well
    check out r/3dshacks for that

Just bought this laptop and was wondering if I would be able to hook it up with an HDMI to a TV and play some NES / SEGA / SNES roms smoothly with it? And if it can handle that what 2 controllers would you recommend to use so me and my friend can play co-op

u/Melon__Bread · 3 pointsr/emulation

I use: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005Z5HT2M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 on my laptop & http://www.amazon.com/Medialink-USB-Bluetooth-Adapter-Technology/dp/B004LNXO28/ref=pd_cp_pc_2 on my Desktop pretty much plug in play om both
(Works great on Windows & Linux)

Also you will wanna grab this http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-DS4-To-XInput-Wrapper (Windows Only) or https://github.com/chrippa/ds4drv (Linux only) , gives you more control over the controller and enables the touchpad

u/Druage · 1 pointr/emulation

I have this device and it works perfectly for ps2 and gamecube controllers. http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Joy-Box-PS2-XBOX-Adapter/dp/B000RLWF7I. The analog triggers work perfectly under windows, on linux, it doesn't recognize them as analog.

u/Logic1010 · 1 pointr/emulation

I just built a mame cabinet from scratch and my friend it is awesome. I got these...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GBC075Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1418445116&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40

And interfaced it with...

http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html

I used the ipac4 board usb and am using an old laptop with no graphics. I have an hdmi out to a 55" projection tv and it is awesome. No problem running games

Checkout the emulator mameuifx also the way to go is torrent files to get the games. I could give you more information if you wish and pictures of my setup just let me know

u/Kirby5588 · 1 pointr/emulation

Ah, okay I have this Hori one. Guess they work the same. Wish theyd make a controller with a switch where its a wii u pro controller and flipping the switch makes it work like a wii classic controller.

u/Must_eat_all_cookies · 1 pointr/emulation

He's most likely talking about this laptop. Although it says it says it comes with an i5 6200U mine acctually came with an i5 7200U. The same seems to hold true among the newer amazon reviews as well.

u/JayFoxRox · 1 pointr/emulation

I'd recommend to hook it up to a PC instead. The cables to do this are very cheap (Sometimes as low as $1, however, this is currently the cheapest I could find).
Then you can look at the actual data being send and do some actual experiments.

As almost all of the controller will be digital, a meter or PSU won't help much. I wouldn't even attempt to hook up the ATX PSU as you might break the controller (which is no longer produced, so we should consider preservation).

If you take any photos or figure anything out, you should document it somewhere. Ideally you'd do this somewhere fitting at http://xboxdevwiki.net . If you don't feel confident documenting this properly, still take good pictures of the insides (and explicitly allow us to use them) and tell us about it somewhere. If the chip labels are not readable in the photos, you should also write them down. Someone else will then probably add it to the wiki then.

The frontpage of xboxdevwiki also mentions places where knowledgeable people hang out, so I'd recommend going there if you are going to do this.

u/blindedscience · 2 pointsr/emulation

This should do it for you. The script comes with an option for overclocking (option 7 here).
Just be aware of heat issues; an overclocked Pi will run hotter. If your Pi is in a room that never gets very hot, you should be fine. Otherwise, I'd recommend that you put a heat sink on it...they're $5 on Amazon.

u/fruitiest_mascara · 3 pointsr/emulation

Okay that looks to be a PSP 1000 so this will be very easy. But first, to put the files you need on the memory card you will need a PSP data cable like this one: http://www.amazon.com/PSP-USB-Cable-Sony/dp/B0009DPQYI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_vg_1 or a memory stick reader of some sort, but the data cable is usually much cheaper.

Edit not a 1000 it is actually a 3000.

u/kupaa · 2 pointsr/emulation

No problem. I'm glad I could help. You only need to worry about storing more games. I can recommend a cheaper method than buying a regular pro duo memory stick.

Memory Stick Adapter $3.71

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176F2RC/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00

Micro SD 16 GB $9.09

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001L1H0SC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

If your PSP doesn't detect the memory stick, you will need to format it on your computer to a FAT format. Then, format it on your PSP and you will be ready to go.

I'm think of buying a new laptop because what I'm running on is a potato for emulation. So I'm asking if the PC I'm going to link is good for running Dolphin Gamecube/Wii, Desmume x432r at 2x 3D Rendering, and I guess Persona 4 on PCX2 at 1080p?

It's a i5 8250u and Nvidia MX150

Link to PC: Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-5762 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RNwJAb5C6HE9W

i swear when i play pacman world on console, there's subtle rumble when you stand on certain surfaces, but on emulator the rumble on my ps2 controller just seems to be constant and generic, resulting in way too much rumble when only stepping lightly... is there a fix for this? i am using epsxe INPUT cote 2.0.0 (lilypad i couldnt even get rumble to work...) and this adapter https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mayflash-Magic-Joy-Xbox-Adapter/dp/B000RLWF7I

u/b1ueskycomp1ex · 1 pointr/emulation

Aside from it's fairly lackluster build quality, [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Retrolink-Saturn-Classic-Controller-Black/dp/B002BFVAV0) controller has done well by me for quite a while. YMMV

u/myusernamesaretaken · 2 pointsr/emulation

I have one that does it. It has analogs for both joysticks and the shoulder buttons, and also a digital for the click at the end of the shoulder buttons. It's here. Although, you may run into problems with the left stick not registering you pushing it all the way even though you are, like it has a reduced range. I fix this with a script in GlovePIE and a virtual joystick using PPJoy. (It could be a little complicated for someone who doesn't know programming.)

u/MrSurfington · 3 pointsr/emulation

I bought this cheapo no-brand controller and its suprised me how decent it is. It's like, really freaking good. Only downside is that it doesn't vibrate. I also recommend 8bitdo stuff, haven't been dissapointed by them.

u/Shoot- · 1 pointr/emulation

I ordered this kit.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C6Q2GSY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A30ZYR2W3VAJ0A

My TV is an older one and doesn't have HDMI.

Will this cable work or is there a different cable I would need to make everything work on TV that doesn't have HDMI and only has RCA.

This is cheaper than a new 360 controller, and doesn't require creating a new USB interface for the old controller: XBOX Controller to PC / MAC USB Cable Adapter
