Well, you DID pick Donna Lee. If you want to learn licks, Donna Lee is THE de facto tune to learn from. Seriously. Use a metronome and slow it down a LOT.
For slower tunes: try K.C. Blues as well. Two of my all time favorites: Parker's Mood and his solo during Now's the Time as well. I used to have the Now's the Time solo completely memorized and down pat, back in early high school, a while back.
I've been out of commission when it comes to horn playing due to a large swath of dental work that has taken years to get done. :(
Voicing/pattern-wise, you may want to check out a book called "Jazzology"
It's pretty challenging, but once you've completed every test in this book you'll be ready.

Just tell me what book your bastardized quote is from. It's from either It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis or The Iron Heel by Jack London if my guess isn't too far off.
Edit: It could also be from Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand as well.
Glad you liked it!
As for the "artistic ability", I wouldn't ever say I have it, but if you are really serious about it, I would strongly suggest this book (you can find PDFs for it with Google if you can't purchase it for some reason). That book alone got me from shitty stick figures to shitty non-stick figures. Really amazing book.
