Never tried the Amazon brand but the samsonite duffel has been great for us...no holes and it holds a massive amount of stuff. Great for household moves as it swallows up clothes and shoes like you wouldn't believe. We have four of them and use them yearly for transatlantic hauling.

You can definitely find some fairly massive wattage voltage converters. (I have a powered standing desk that I literally can't replace the motors on, but really love, so I've been looking into transformers.) I've been looking at this 1000W model on Amazon, that gets good reviews. (usual disclaimers: haven't tried it, don't workfor them, not an affiliate link, etc.)

I've been in Singapore for 12 over years already. After spending 2 consecutive summers bouncing around South East Asia, I left the US permanently at age 33. I haven't looked back.

When i left, i thought it would be more fun to "live" in asia, and "visit" the US. After about 8 years, the visiting part started to feel like a waste of time. Confronted by a limited amount of time for leisure travel, I realised there are so many other interesting places to go and see in the world. How many times do i really need to come back to the US and go to In-N-Out?

Now my life is totally over here. My wife is Singaporean and we have no interest in going to the US. The flight is long and expensive. Accommodations are overpriced & kind of suck. Everyone wants a tip.

After 12 years, the shortcomings of the US have only become more acute, but that's just me. Happy to chat if you want to hit me with a DM.

Might consider reading this book. It helped me out a lot, but there are certainly many others:

The Grown-Up's Guide to Running Away from Home

you are overloading your circuit and its very likely that you adapter can't support the capacity necessary to run your devices.

You need something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Bright-VC1500W-Voltage-Transformer-converter/dp/B000MXZ2XK?th=1

Its rated to 1500watts, plenty enough to run the KitchenAid mixer - assuming you have the 600watt one.

I think your best solution is to size it to the highest 'wattaged' appliance, and from the list you have in your post it maybe the rice cooker. So check the wattage on the info plate, if its less than 1500watts, then you can something similar to the above link - anything more you will have to up size accordingly.

My background, so you know I'm not full of it.

  1. I have a consulting firm here in Europe where, amongst other things, we do international IT recruiting (no, we don't have jobs for anyone. This is very specialized work)
  2. I'm also in IT, and have written well-reviewed programming books, speak at numerous conferences, and so on.
  3. I wrote the Overseas Exile blog for years, telling people how to relocate abroad.
  4. I'm an American and have lived in the US, Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, and now live on the west coast of France.

In short, I know this area very well.

First, /r/IWantOut is a great resource. Second, converting your bullet points to a numbered list:

  5. I have close family in Germany.
  • I've been to Germany several times.
  • I'm considering moving to be near to them, as well as wanting a change of environment.
  • I have an established support system, in country, that I can rely upon if I do relocate.
  • My German language skills are shoddy, but I have the ability to communicate on a level that has sufficed to travel alone, and speak in a pathetic version of the language. I will attend language classes to improve so I can answer customs officials. Or, angry, German senior-citizen women, who yell at me for some perceived impropriety.
  • I'm well aware of the paperwork/bureaucracy.

What you're looking for is a potential employer. Given that context, here's how the'll view the above points:

  1. They don't care.
  2. They don't care.
  3. They don't care.
  4. They don't care.
  5. They don't care.
  6. They don't care.

I'm sorry to be harsh, but that's how it works. Germany's a fairly hot IT job market right now, but what they want to know is:

  7. Are you any good?
  8. Are you in Germany?
  9. When can you start?

That's oversimplifying, but you'll probably want to check out the German Blue Card, start networking with German colleagues, and make contacts and set up a week or so of interviews. Fly over there and start interviewing.

To increase your chances, read my five-part "how to get a work permit" guide.

You'll also want to read "we don't pay for relocation" and "we don't sponsor work permits".

With that, you'll have enough to be a more more effective international job seeker.

I miss these babies. Burritos. Kellogg's frosted mini-wheats. Decent, inexpensive wine. Fabulous, reasonably-priced wine. Wild-caught salmon. Cheap beef. Rustic bread. Food co-ops. Popeye's Fried Chicken. Smoked pork shoulders. Bacon and eggs cooked just so. Soul food. Turkey. Pies. Decent hamburgers. Real Pizza. Cardini's Caesar Salad Dressing. Romaine lettuce. Triscuits. Well made flour tortillas. Cheap corn tortilla chips. Jalapeño peppers.
Edit: Oh yeah, gravy.

Hear me out: a foot swing for the airplane. I do some brutal long hauls for work but don’t usually get to choose the airline I have status on, so stuck in coach for 12-16 hours frequently.

The foot swing is basically a thin padded cushion with straps that buckle. You put it around the arms of the tray table and then put your feet or legs on the cushion. It’s been a game changer for me, it was cheap, and it doesn’t weigh munch. I am 10x more comfortable when trying to sleep using this thing.

Computer equipment (PCs, monitors) generally work with both 110 and 220V. Check the writing near where the cable attaches.

If so, then you just need a new cable. You may be able to find it cheaper but here’s an example:
