As far as I am aware there is only the novelization of the movie, no other official novels. A couple novels were initially proposed I believe but Joss shot them down as he didn't have the time to be involved creatively. There are a couple short stories in the companion books like Still Flying (https://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Flying-Celebration-Whedons-Acclaimed/dp/1848565062) but that may not tickle your itch.

Outside of that there are plenty of fan-fic but I am not familiar with that community at all so I have no suggestions there.

You could also try the fan podcasts if you haven't already, the major ones are: The Signal, Firefly Talk and Sending a Wave. Only Sending a Wave is still being made, but The Signal especially had many great sections that I think stand the test of time. They include discussions about different aspects of the show, some audio drama fan-fic and interviews with cast members (mainly in the first season which was the run up to the movie). Firefly Talk was more fan run, featuring fan submitted essays. Sending a Wave is more focused on the fan community, they include interviews with the organisers for some of the fan run events and discussions about cons and screenings that the podcast hosts have been to.

I'm actually not sure what book /u/PachoWumbo is referring to, but I can help out with the comics. Each are stand alone volumes so reading them in chronological order is unnecessary. They're also a collection of stories, some actually recounting tales from another time, so it's hard to fit those in chronological order perfect. The best I can do is give you a description of each, put them in very loose chronological order, and let you decide.

  • Serenity Vol 3 - The Shepherd's Tale: Covers Book's backstory and secret past, so this is technically "first". As I mentioned in my previous comment the book is controversial. A lot of people didn't like it, some did.
  • Serenity Vol 2 - Better Days and Other Stories: Includes "Better Days", "The Other Half", "Downtime", and "Float Out". Basically like more episodes following the series. This is roughly next, but Float Out technically takes place after Serenity and it's about a few of Wash's friends recounting old tales of him in the wake of his death. So kind of before and after at the same time. This is also where we find out...something important about Zoe. (Edit: Apparently I don't know how to do spoiler tags...)
  • Serenity Vol 1 - Those Left Behind Takes place sort of after the last one, still before the movie. Kind of like more episodes.
  • Serenity Vol 4 - Leaves on the Wind - Takes place after the movie. A bit after the "Float Out" story in the Better Days trade.

It's not perfect chronological order, but as I said, they can all be read independently of each other.

Well, if you look at the Amazon listing, 90% of the reviews are 4 star or higher. I've played it with a dozen people or so, not all Firefly fans, and the game is extremely well received.

http://www.amazon.com/Gale-Force-9-GF9-FIRE001-Firefly/dp/0992251656/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452689045&sr=8-1&keywords=firefly+the+board+game

As far as how it relates to other games, it gives you a huge amount of freedom. The best way I can describe it is that it's a free roaming board game. You have end goals that you work toward, but how you get there is 100% up to you. You can go anywhere, talk to anyone, buy anything, arrange your crew and equip them however you wish.

Full disclosure, the first time you play won't be a 'real' game. The rule book is daunting the first time you look through it, but that's mainly due to how you have to set the board and your ships up. After a few turns, everything makes sense and it's actually a ridiculously easy game to play.

One

Two

Three

Or this. Which isn't released yet, but is a collection of the three.

There is also [this] (http://images.comiccollectorlive.com/covers/2d2/2d27af44-4b03-412e-a5d4-43df3eafac93.jpg) which is a very small (and rare) comic that was given out for free at some event or other I can't be bothered remembering. I'm pretty certain they're now only available through second hand purchase.

u/hyland3r · 10 pointsr/firefly

They don't explain it in the show or movie, but everything is explained very well in Shepherd's Tale. So far, all the comic stories have been pretty good and are a nice way to revisit The 'Verse.

Firefly: A Celebration is a book with all the scripts along with a collection of anecdotes, pictures, interviews, and a couple short stories.

There's the 1:400 scale model of Serenity at QMx, ThinkGeek, and Amazon, but it's pretty expensive.

There's also the key chain model of Serenity, also available at QMx, ThinkGeek, and Amazon.

If neither of you already have it, you might want to consider getting the DVD or Blu-Ray versions if you like commentaries or the special features (though, much of the latter have been re-uploaded to YouTube). Same goes for the official soundtracks (Firefly & Serenity).

u/Chattery · 3 pointsr/firefly

Well even though it isn't space I do recommend Red Dead Redemption. It's got a more serious tone than Firefly, but it's still on the level.

Stargate: Universe, from what I've seen, has been pretty good. My dad loves watching it - it's an ensemble in space - might be up your alley?

Definitely check out the comic books on amazon of Firefly/Serenity, though to fight off the depression just a little bit longer.

If you're a bookworm with a deep pocket, here's a list of books on Amazon:

Serenity Vol 1

Serenity Vol 2

Serenity Vol 3

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind

Firefly The Official Companion Volumes One and Two

Firefly: Still Flying

Firefly: A Celebration

u/MortalitySalient · 2 pointsr/firefly

This is the official boardgame. It is massive and complex, but once you get the hang of it, it is a fantastic game. The expansions add a loy too (pirates and bounty adds player interaction for instance) and there is even a single player campaign that is still fun (good for learning the quirks of the gamr before bringing it to new players. https://www.amazon.com/Gale-Force-9-GF9-FIRE001-Firefly/dp/0992251656

I just bought the physical versions on amazon, there seem to be large format and small format versions of some of them..

I'm probably the last person to give advice on how/where/how though, i know ziltch about comic books or graphic novels.

These are the links to ones i bought, of them was a collection of several of them:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1593074492/

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1595827390/

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1595825614/

I'm pretty sure you could probably track down digital versions through your favorite pirate outfit if you roll that way... (i honestly have no idea)

u/Tharlinn · 3 pointsr/firefly

Ah that is the actual game? It was listed under books :p
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firefly-the-Game/dp/0992251656/
I might also check in with my local game store to see when they can get it on pre-order :)

Thanks! :)

u/JosephND · 2 pointsr/firefly

>"It is also for sale on Amazon for $26.10 with free prime shipping." - /u/jhturbo

(No need to delete your post dude, it's fine. I made that mistake as well when I looked)

That's for the expansion: Firefly - Pirates And Bounty Hunters - Expansion $26.10 with Amazon Prime. The regular board game is Firefly: the Game $41.29 with Amazon Prime. There's another expansion, Firefly: the Game - Breakin Atmo: Game Booster Expansion Set $10.35 with Amazon Prime.

u/majoroutage · 1 pointr/firefly

I bought Vol 1 and 2 paperbacks. Vol 1 actually looks like the Amazon photo but with the "Firefly Class" stamp added, so I don't know what that makes it.

The Volume 2 I got is the original without the stamp or the "...And Other Stories"

Shepard's Tale is hardcover only, apparently. In retrospect, I wish I had just ordered them all in hardcover anyway.

u/thepusherman74 · 7 pointsr/firefly

If you really want to find out more about Shepherd Book's backstory, this is a pretty amazing read.

u/greyjackal · 1 pointr/firefly

Love Pete's stuff :) I've got Gandalf too, Darth Vader and Terminator :
Imgur

The big one is the 10th Anniversary poster.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firefly-Anniversary-Celebration-Print-Poster/dp/B009I3TWMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382027216&sr=8-1&keywords=firefly+10th+anniversary+poster

Word of warning if in the UK - that's an Ikea Ribba frame and the only one I could find that was even close to the right size. I had to fold the bottom by a cm to make it fit.

u/IHideMyBlade · 2 pointsr/firefly

http://www.amazon.com/Serenity-Vol-Those-Left-Behind/dp/1593074492

That's the first volume. The second one is called Better Days and the most recent one is A Shepherd's Tale. The first two volumes are events that happen between the end of Firefly and the beginning of Serenity! A Shepherd's Tale tells the much needed story behind Book. They are amazing!

u/Wonderbolt · 0 pointsr/firefly

One could say the same about VHS to DVD, or any format really. Personally, I think if you're going to spend money on something you like, why not get it in the best available quality? Especially when the upgrade is just five dollars more.

u/SpreadMutation · 1 pointr/firefly

It's all explained in the comic "The Shepherd's Tale":
http://www.amazon.com/Serenity-Shepherds-Tale-Zack-Whedon/dp/1595825614/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311835599&sr=8-1

Oh, and by the way, it's pretty amazing. (goes without saying almost haha)

u/chongo79 · 9 pointsr/firefly

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1595825614/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1414509618&sr=8-1

Shepherd's Tale is the title. (And it's $13.) I would still have loved to see it come out over a long series of episodes. One graphic novel was too short.

u/Ralph90009 · 1 pointr/firefly

[Amazon link anyone?] (http://www.amazon.com/Serenity-Steelbook-Blu-ray-Digital-UltraViolet/dp/B00C6BA4SE)

Your wallet might not thank me, but you're welcome nonetheless.

EDIT: Gorramnit, it's a pre-order. Amazon won't have it until June 25^(th).

u/IWasMeButNowHesGone · 7 pointsr/firefly

I had heard recently about the news that a comic was going to be in development soon but I had no idea there already were some comics made!

(edit: note to self, learn to look at the sidebar once in while...)

Just added these to my Amazon cart:

u/mylescloutier · 4 pointsr/firefly

And then the comics Serenity Vol 1: Those Left Behind, Serenity Vol 2: Better Days, Serenity Vol 3: The Shepherd's Tale, and for when you re-watch the series (tomorrow) Firefly: The Official Companion (hehe) Vol 1, Firefly: The Official Companion Vol 2.

No I don't work for Whedon, just another browncoat...check your local library first, it's free!

u/DejaDoink · 2 pointsr/firefly

Yes, and it's amazing! (just like the show)
It's on iTunes for $10, but for 25 songs it's not too unreasonable.
It's also on Amazon for a little less.

u/AllensArmy · 12 pointsr/firefly

While I love the Firefly graphic novels and your girlfriend probably is a keeper, unless she writes her thesis in half an hour, you're going to need to find something else to do.

u/Fligui · 2 pointsr/firefly

Hi, very excited to find there are comics, found some on amazon, are these them? Which do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

You should probably skip the retail price (and the sales tax, depending on your state) and buy them on Amazon or somewhere else online...

http://amzn.com/B00C6BA4SE

$14.19 for Serenity, free shipping with Prime or $25+ order

Also, it says there that it's been out since 2005...

u/japabama · 4 pointsr/firefly

Serenity: Better Days is the second TPB, and Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale is the Shepherd Book backstory (I believe it's also out of print).

There were also 2 one-shot comics (meaning they were limited run and won't be reprinted) released after Better Days and before The Shepherd's Tale. Their titles are The Other Half and Float Out (Wash backstory penned by Patton Oswald). Also, there was a one-shot by Zack Whedon that came out on Free Comic Book Day a couple months ago. It was one side of a double feature with the other side being a Star Wars comic.

I THINK that's all of them, someone correct me if it isn't.

u/Fiend1138 · 2 pointsr/firefly

You can check it out here. It's really a fun read.

u/SirShmoopy7 · 6 pointsr/firefly

Below is the official board game. It's pretty fun, but there is very little interaction between players during the game. It's more about racing to the finish

Firefly: The Game https://www.amazon.com/dp/0992251656/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_lqApybNV89ATN

Edit: Also, I believe you can get a digital version on Tabletop Simulator for PC from the Steam Workshop

u/GizmosArrow · 1 pointr/firefly

Long story short, I got mine as a review copy from Titan Books, but you can find it on Amazon for sure.

u/Kings164 · 2 pointsr/firefly

Idk about online, but the only place I know they exist for sure is this book.

u/vocativelion · 2 pointsr/firefly

The Shepard's tale goes into depth of who the Shepard is and where he came from, you don't learn much about him on the show. As short as the book is it explains so much about the Shepard
that you just wish there was more.

Firefly: 15th Anniversary Collector's Edition [Blu-ray] [Import] https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07451532Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bEtWzb9TN7MVJ Hopefully this works.

u/m0rfiend · 1 pointr/firefly

absolutely: firefly still flying includes some new stories from the original series writers!

u/joealarson · 2 pointsr/firefly

Better link.

So looking at the board it looks like they went back to the classic layout, which kinda disappoints me because the 2013 edition fixed so many problems with the original game. But this one seems to have added some "?" spots, who knows what they do.

Link for good measure.

Also, it makes me sad to see things like "Season 1" and "The Complete Series". Too Soon, production people, too soon.

u/jediprime · 2 pointsr/firefly

ARE YOU ME?

Seriously was watching Serenity yesterday and had that thought, "how cool would it be if there was a spacial distortion that threw the now-retired operative back in time, and he became book?"

But here's what has the actual back story: http://www.amazon.com/Serenity-Shepherds-Tale-Zack-Whedon/dp/1595825614/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374460103&sr=8-1&keywords=shephard%27s+tale

I've read all the comics, they're all worth the read.

u/memoryspaceglitch · 1 pointr/firefly

Hint: There's actually a (iirc canon) Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale comic that wraps Shepherd Book's story up ;)

u/cantankerix · 2 pointsr/firefly

Welcome to Browncoat territory! You'll be sad when you've reached the last episode, but you can move on to R. Tam Sessions, and there is more after that.

u/WarmMachine · 2 pointsr/firefly

Read The Shepherd's Tale if you want to know about Shepherd's past. You're not very far off the mark, though.

If you want for them not to be able to take the show from you, it can be purchased for under 20 bucks
