I've always been a fan of Garmin watches; all the models I've come across are good, just depends on how many features you want and what you're looking to spend.
Forerunner 10 ($130) is the basic model and will do just distance, time, and pace.
Forerunner 220 is the step up and can be used with an optional heart rate monitor. This is the one I use, and since it's the older, middle model you can usually find a good deal on it used if you shop around.
Forerunner 620 ($450) is the ultimate running watch. Paired with the special heart rate monitor it will also track your cadence, how much you bounce when running (vertical oscillation), and how much time you your feet spend on the ground on each stride. Way more info than I need, and way, way out of my price range.
TomTom and Magellan are also options, but I have no experience with these brands. If you need more information, DCRainMaker is a blog that reviews GPS watches; he's really detailed and he covers every watch that comes out.

I'm interested in their guide, but it's just too expensive. I can get 5 cookbooks instead.

The first time I did Aphrodite my tail bone was also hurting. in order to stop the pain i decided to get an extra padded mat. I got one that is about an inch thick. Once i used the mat the pain in my tailbone went away almost immediately.
Here is the link to the one that i got, and its pretty good.
