Bro, I get you. I mean, I fucking GET YOU. I'm doing undergrad now, and all these kids always are throwing around fancy words like they're fireworks on the fourth of fucking July. Trying to impress profs 'n' all, know what I'm sayin'?
If you wanna get into philosophy, I recommend a good survey; it'll help you get your bearings 'n' shit, so you ain't so fucking lost all the time. My favorite is Sophie's World. It's written with the chillun in mind, so it's the absolute shit at doing all this crazy philosophy in a way that don't fuck with your mind too much. Read it, find an idea or philosopher you like, then go on. I done a comment like this one before with some recommendations and shit, so here ya go. Godspeed, my friend.
Um, to be honest I haven't read much from neuroscience other than Libet's Experiment and the clinical neuropsychologist Paul Broks saying, “We have this deep intuition that there is a core… But neuroscience shows that there is no center in that brain where things do all come together.”
There are some articles and books I have in my reading list, but once you get that this can be easily confirmed in DIRECT EXPERIENCE, the other materials are just superfluous, IMO. Here, I'll share them anyway.
“Who’s There?” Is The Self A Convenient Fiction?
Ego Trick: In Search of the Self
The Self Illusion: How the Social Brain Creates Identity
What Exactly Is the Self? Insights from Neuroscience
Neuroscience of Self and Self-Regulation
The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self
Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain
And check out The Ascent of Humanity for a thorough discussion of the implications of the separate self on lots of aspects of our (collective) lives. Eisenstein traces all of the converging crises of our age to a common source, which he calls Separation. It is the ideology of the discrete and separate self that has generated these crises; therefore, he argues, nothing less than a "revolution in human beingness" will be sufficient to transform our relationship to each other and the planet.
Good looks, bro. I ain't no nerd I can't get down with some 800 pages the second book Fear and Trembling sounds like it's right up my ally, that and I found this The Essential Kierkegaard
This emo dude and his existentialism is sounding right to me, thanks for the recommendations, bro.
Bro, I is new to tha philosophy game too. Fucking get on wikipedia, and just keep clicking links till your like "DAMN, THIS GUY SPEAKS TRUUUTH". Then buy his fucking books man. Books are the ONE.
Also this is fucking great as an introduction: http://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Does-All-Mean-Introduction/dp/0195174372/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382663106&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=tomas+nagel+what+does+it+all+mean
If yo can read French, I suggest Histoire universelle de la pensée: De Cro-Magnon à Steevy for a fun trip.
"Philosophy is like Poland: full of swamps and often invaded by the Germans".
live life
also watch the movie "Revolver" and check out this fucking book http://www.amazon.com/Siddhartha-Dhammapada-New-Directions-Paperbook/dp/0811218503/ref=sr_1_12?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324424022&sr=1-12
this one comes with the Dhammaphada which is badass
Heh. You'll hear that People's History is biased. His intention was to give fuel for a socialist revolution. That's true. What's more important to learn is that everything is biased. The dream of an unbiased media is that. Even when trying to be objective with facts, there's still the question of which facts to use, which leads to subjectivity and bias. In the end, there is no such thing as objective truth (that's a fun rabbit hole to follow)
So in this case "Yes and," those fuckers are still beholden to shareholders, boards, public opinion, etc. Not only does everyone answer to someone, the ironic truth is that the more power you have, the more people you must answer to.
Apologies--The first critique. The Critique of Pure Reason. This one, to be exact.
Though it ain't no literary theory, you might be interested in "Art and Physics" by Leonard Schlain.
I had this introductory text in two literary theory classes, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level. It is fairly accessible, I think, for most of mah nizzles out there lookin' to learn themselves some deep shit. I also posted a link up at the end of my initial comment with a link to a series of books that do specialized introductions to particular aspects of literary theory. Might peep one of them out, yo.
yo dawg, i heard you liked Kierkegaard, so I figured i'd point you towards some dank bookskies.
Either/Or. is some good shit, too fucking long and meandering in total in my not so humble opinion, but some good shit to flip through, the individual essays are da baus, especially "the unhappiest man". Also, you may wanna check out Elliott Smith's album by the same name and blast it on your boom box while you're reading.
Fear and Trembling. Some other dank essays, I haven't personally gotten through all of it what with all the bitches that need my attention, but i've heard it's his best.
Hope I've helped a fellow brolosopher out.
Ninja edit: If I haven't, you can go fuck yourself.
sup dawg, you know that shit you was blastin' about yo ass just being a physical process? dat shits all retarded. the difference between yo ass and chemical reactions is that yo ass can consciously choose to change the chemical reactions that cause the self to appear to arise in the first place. you dig?
yo ass is right about yo ego being a well fabricated illusion, but the self is gotta exist holmes. if you wana check out some dope shit some other homies be spittin', check out The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are by alan muthafukkin watts and How to See Youself as You Really Are by one dope ass mothafukka who calls his ass the Dalai Lama.
