I understand you're a newbie to the ASoIaF world, and therefore a little late to the party. I've been there for the 8 years of blog posts about the Giants and Wildcards and of him hocking his latest piece of craphenalia in real time. You haven't. I don't get into this "I've been reading since before it was cool, so I'm better than you" rhetoric alot of the old guard seem to - that's silly - but it does give me better insight to the things we are discussing here than someone who just discovered these were books last summer.

I don't really have the inclination to get too involved in this so I just gave you the Amazon links. There's a star rating near the book titles. These ratings summarize the quality of the product listed. As you can see the first three books of the series have exceptional ratings: 4.5+ stars, but then starting with Feast and continuing through Dance (current) you see these drop down to 3 stars. There's your demonstration. I'm not going to continue to take you by the hand and point to things as obvious as this.

This isn't an MMO, but if you didn't know there is a GoT board game that is a lot of fun. My housemates and I play it ever once in a while (it can last 5-7 hours) and love it.

Dunk and Egg are not as easy to get as I would like. They appear in anthologies: Legends, Legends II, and Warriors.

I saw them on Amazon, where you can buy the standalone graphic novels, but on Amazon, The Hedge Knight costs > $60 used. Better to get Legends for like $10.

They already have one, and its an amazing game. Admittedly it isn't Risk per se. I actually think that it plays better than Risk, but yours looks pretty sweet though.

I bought a book called 'A Feast of Ice and Fire'. It's based on a blog that was written by two women who attempted to recreate the recipes they read about in the books. They used some original medieval recipes to get as authentic as they possibly could.

It has a forward by GRR Martin, so he obviously approves.

South of the Frostfangs, you have "The Gorge"

This is essentially a Grand Canyon-style gorge with a river at the bottom. In short, climbing the wall would be easier than repelling down the gorge, sailing across the river, and then climbing up the other side.

Westwatch-By-The-Bridge is not named so for shits and giggles. It is the site of the Bridge of Skulls. The Bridge of Skulls has a long history of being the source of many wildling vs. Night's Watch battles (and where the Lord of Bones began his famous uniform). For years, the NW has held off the wildlings in this funnel of a bridge that crosses the gorge.

As far as sailing goes, it becomes a bit tricky, logistically, for White Walkers (Others). The Others have minions called "Wights". These are people who have been turned to the Others' cause via death and reanimation. They're semi-intelligent zombies with no recollection of their past. In order to sail a fleet across the Bay of Ice, they'd expose themselves to those northern waters that are very treacherous, as well as risking a landing among the Mountain Clans of the North (landing on Mountains is not fun). They would need to sail much further south in order to make it worth while, putting them very near to Winterfell loyalists and again, being met with opposition.

Finally, you have the Bay of Seals. This bay is notoriously awful to cross. The waters are choppy and sink ships brave enough to conquer it more often than not, and there are rumors of beasts living in the waters there. If anyone were to brave the waters of The Bay of Seals, they would be seen by the towers at Eastwatch and met on shore with forces.

In short, The Wall works in conjunction with several "natural" barriers preventing Wights, White Walkers, and Wildlings from going around it. The only sure-fire way into Westeros is to go through The Wall.

This is a really great scan from "The Lands of Ice and Fire". If you like this map I would highly suggest getting the whole physical set. I plan to laminate some of them and maybe get one framed.

When you searched for the novellas did you happen to search by the specific titles (The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight? If you did then I can see why you would think they'd be too expensive. The stories are part of three separate collections of short stories that are pretty cheap. They are Legends, Legends II, and Warriors. You can pick up all three on Amazon for like $30 total.

Nope, while this bears similarities as to how a Risk board is layed out, territories and all that, this is a gameboard made specifically for this. A super complex strategy game set in Westeros, requiring the use of advanced strategy, cunning diplomacy, and a healthy amount of bloodshed to best your opponents and conquer the Iron Throne.


The Thinkgeek page listed above has a nice bit of info about the game, but you can buy on Amazon for $15 less.

In the forward to the cookbook he explains that he writes the food in as much details as he does to make the world come alive. Personally I love it - although reading the books did shoot my cholesterol through the roof since I had to have plates of cheese, sausage, olives, etc whenever I read....

This looks excessive out of context, but GRRM uses food to describe people and places. In this case, the food describes the wealth of White Harbor and Manderly's obesity.

I highly recomend the Sister's Stew from A feast of ice and fire. It lives up to the description in the book.

If you like game of thrones and risk type games, it's an absolute blast. However, I highly recommend spending a loooot of time reading the rules to fully understand it or bring a friend to "lead" the game if you know someone who knows how to play, as it can be confusing for six beginners.

And nice work, OP! I imagine it's just total chaos and very game of thrones-y with the fake alliances and such you could do with that many people playing.

You can find a lower-quality scan of the "Known World" map from the Land of Ice and Fire map book over thisaway. I recommend buying the collection on Amazon -- it's well worth it. I've spent hours pouring over the maps.

If you decide to get real nerdy, there's a book that came out that has poster size maps of every area. The Known World, Westeros, The Free Cities, Bravos, King's Landing, Beyond the Wall, Slaver's Bay, The Dothraki Sea, The West, The East, Central Essos, and Journeys (Which shows the travels of major characters).

The Risk board is really nice aesthetically, but try the Game of Thrones strategy game for actual gameplay. It's a lot of fun if you have a few friends and 7-8 hours to kill!

You can get the Westeros version and the Essos version both on Amazon.

GRRM is supposed to release an official map/poster book in October with the known world. Whether these land masses will be included is not known, but it's confirmed to have more information than we currently have on Essos and Sothoyos including geography and scale.

But apparently it ended up being an anthology of sorts with essays about ASOIAF from various writers. The reviews don't look that good.

There is a Game of Thrones board game that incorporates a lot of those characteristics. Not sure if you know about it, but each player plays as a major house and has "house cards" that help determine battles. Its not as much "luck" based as risk.

The order of the books is

   Forewarning: Books 4 and 5 take place concurrently, unlike the first three, they are really just one book that was released in two volumes. So I wouldn't recommend starting book 4, unless you already own book five.

I my knowledge theres only 3 games.

The card game that I have never played, and is similar to amgic the gathering... so its not really for me.

There is "battles of westeros", which is a two-player game, and can be alot of fun.

There is a history book I listened to in audiobook form while at work. It has no real main characters, but is instead much a history book from school. All told to Tommen by a Maester (I forget who specifically) as a history lesson. It can be a bit boring and fascinating at the same time. Some chapters/histories are so many steps removed from show/books that it got a little slow at times. Definatly worth it though. Made my re-watch of the show VERY different because I knew so much more about the world.

While it doesn't cover everything, it covers everything that is known to the Citidel. Entire histories of small islands north of the Dothraki Sea called Ib, and the islands between Valyria and Sothoros called the Basilisk Isles. But it's all accumulated knowledge, and so even in the book, there is doubt cast on a lot of it as well acknowledging the missing pieces.

There is also an official atlas that has very detailed maps. I would suggest finding one or on the internet to glance at at the same time. It helped me A LOT in understanding what was going on in these histories.

Odd, where did you get your copy? Mine was on preorder from amazon.co.uk so I just assumed that when it was released :/

They have a paperback boxed set sold in America that was released last month. The HBO edition would be out later this year I believe. The seven book set like this was is the European edition. It's the first 5 books with ASOS and ADWD broken up into 2 books each.

It annoys me how people who bought this box set write reviews bitching about how they were scammed and thought they were buying all 7 books in the series. They obviously didn't have the sense to find out that GRRM hasn't even finished books 6 or 7, or that the 2nd ASOS and ADWD books in this set are labelled as 'part 2'.

No worries. It didn't take me that long. Maybe 12 hours for each one? Here is Westeros. Here is Essos. They make a 3D puzzle of the Red Keep too.

I actually recommend the second edition. It's like Risk, but everyone goes at the same time. 3-6 players (recommend 6). Alliances are absolutely required or else you end up locked in eternal war. There is politics, favoritism, and requires a solid strategy.

For added fun, use the Tides of Battle Cards as well, which will change the outcome of every battle, and just makes things chaotic and you really have to weigh your combat options.
