Maybe grab the Bellomo kindle edition as well, especially if you have a tablet. It is absolutely wonderful.
I don't know what is or isn't canon, but I can't recommend this highly enough. Great comics, GI Joe or otherwise. There's multiple volumes and they're all so good.

What's been great is my two boys are getting into these comics, and they hold up well.
You can buy various collections of comics (like this https://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Classics-Vol-1-ebook/dp/B00939OLRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1509720049&sr=8-1&keywords=classic+gi+joe+vol+1) and they're pretty good for kids. Now, you don't get the original advertisements, but still. They're very readable this way. (We have paper, not Kindle versions)

There's the trade. Cobra Civil War and Cobra Command build on the events of The Last Laugh. They are good, although they drag a bit at times.
After that, Mike Costa did more Cobra issues that focus on a new cast. These too, are good.
IDW Gijoe isn't always easy to read, but it is worth it.
