I don't have DBX, but it's only $410 Amazon.

DBXI is only $441.

Archive.org is great, but in terms of statistics and interesting facts, it pales in comparison to Deadbase. You could geat a break down of each song, first time it was played, last time it was played, how often it appeared in the first set/second set, how many times it was played per year, etc. Iphone / Android would be the perfect platform for that kind of info.

I agree with my fellow heads, the songs have their own way of speaking to you, and that is where the true (and most important) meaning lies...

The GD originals, besides being great tunes, can evoke such vivid imagery (think Chinacat), archetypal literary devices (think wheels, roses, wind, & moon), or epic storytelling arcs (think Terrapin).

Researching the traditional or contemporary cover tunes reveals the rich history behind them. For example, chasing Desolation Row leads you into the poetry of Dylan, and uncovering Stagger Lee opens the world to American folk music.

In addition to the sites already referenced, here are some other ideas:

For Hunter songs, this book provides some insight: Box of Rain straight from the man himself.

And to start exploring the songs the band covered, start here, but this site does not seem to include the "traditionals" such as Peggy-O or Cold Rain and Snow...you can probably google them.

Happy exploring, my friend!

I really recommend getting this

And getting some of this

The Grateful Dead Movie is a great start.
Then I'd recommend So Far
Downhill From Here and View From The Vault III are also great.

If you cant afford it then Im sure the internet has an answer.

I just read Jerry on Jerry and it's a great read (you can also get it on CD, which has the audio of the interviews - SUPER cool).

I'd recommend Bill Graham's autobiography, thoroughly enjoyed it. Not specifically the Dead, but lots of interesting stuff. Probably not in the 'special' bracket you're asking for either!

Great post. There’s an album called, “Roots of the Dead” I discovered while working at a music store way back in the day. Not sure if OP is referencing the same. Here’s the link. Highly recommend.

I also love the reggae album of dead songs. It's called "Fire on the Mountain" and can be found here...

Would also like to know. Haven’t come across this one yet but has to be quite interesting.

Edit: quick google search says it’s called Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Roll

Conversations with the Dead by David Gans is probably a good place to start. It is a compendium of interviews, a good read.

A Long, Strange Trip by Dennis McNally is a good book, might be another one to check out.

:)

Description
The guitarist was the lead player in an improbably successful death and resurrection show. The pianist had been heard by millions who had not heard of him. Marilyn Monroe used to babysit the bass player. The drummer played with Elvis. In November 1975 these four musicians played to around five hundred people in a Berkeley beer hall....

They seem to be going for stupid cash. Rip those discs to FLAC's and make a car payment or two.

I didn’t realize, but he has a memoir coming out in June. I’ve just pre-ordered.

I just finished "So Many Roads" by David Browne and it was pretty solid - it's hard to be the authoritative biography of the Dead when the band has a 50 year history, thousands of shows and a rotating cast of larger-than-life characters. If I could fault it on anything, it was written for fans and not for the layperson, so cultural weight and wider relevance tend to get passed by. Still a great read for any fan that wants to know what drove many of their business, personal, musical and touring decisions. Note: Dead & Co are not included even though it was published last year.

The Deadbase X reviews make it worth its while. It'll tell a story about i.e. 03-25-1972, how the hell's angels were there, and a bomb threat got everyone to leave the venue and everyone without tickets got in, but as personal stories.
