If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

In that case, I would recommend this Rangeman. Listed at $225 (randomly, your limit) but I'm sure you could offer around $200 and make a deal.

That's much nicer than the regular rangeman, too. Carbon fiber band an a metal keeper. (Those are basically the only two improvements over the regular Rangeman.) That's worth the little extra you'd pay though.

If that doesn't work for you, then in my order of preference for a military bf:

  1. regular Rangeman
  2. regular Mudman (between 1 and 2 might depend on his branch).
  3. This GD-350. Round but not too round. Black with negative display. Bigger numbers, and the updated neg. display (more readable). (also only $100). (this one is on my short list).

There are a bunch of other models, and basically any of them would fit your qualifications. Pick the one you like seeing him in best! :)

These are slightly out of your price range, but worth it in looks and technology. AWGM-100-1AC or AWGM-100b-1AC. There is also the AW590-1A.
These are all smaller G-Shock watches, but they wear very comfortably.

Personally, I like the bigger models because of their rugged masculine looks on my wrist (I have a 7.5" wrist). If you have a large wrist, you might also consider saving up for a GA-1000.

Just got my first G-Shock last weekend to see if I like the size and style, been wearing it ever since. Went with the DW9052-1V and would like to start moving up into nicer ones, I've been considering the GW7900B-1 for my next one because it has solar charging and auto illumination. Thoughts?

heres a new version of your old watch, i recently bought it and love it. btw i also have a rangeman and wear this new one more often because the size is smaller. oh and its still solar and atomic like the rangeman.

I have the green version of the 7900 and like it a lot. The second watch listed i have played with before and didn't like it because i felt like the buttons were kind of hard to press, compared to the 7900 where the buttons are completly exposed.

If you like the color scheme of the second watch more, consider this colorway of the 7900

Cheapest solar g shocks:

GWM500A-1 - $70

GW6900-1 - $76.50

GWM5610-1 - $84, easily the most popular cheap g shock

I recommend going through this thread for bluetooth functions

But really the only thing I use it for is to check the battery level, but while doing that it automatically time syncs. I don't live somewhere where I always get atomic.

I own a mechanical watch.

Whenever I get tired of the idea of wearing a mechanical watch, I just grab the watch that's the best at telling time. A Casio.

The only watch I see on-par with a quartz digital or analogue is a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. Either a steel G-Square or the cheapy 20 dollar resin watch.

The appeal of a mechanically powered watch with the precision of a quartz.

Found some replacement straps here. Could only find them for the dw-003 but they should work for yours as well.

Do you plan to use the adjust button so many time? I suppose it would be a dealbreaker if you do plan to use the timer or stopwatch so much and its hard to press.

In other case the "G5600" has non-recessed adjust button. It's slightly less costly than its older brother the "M5610". $75 vs $90. Either of those might work if you want the same square style of G-Shock.

In terms of NATO straps, Jays&Kays has adapters for all square-style G-Shocks. Its about $12 on Etsy. It's usable on your model as well.

No worries. Glad I can help. This is mine.

EDIT: Wrist shot. Keep in mind I have a very small wrist at 6 inch.

u/TedJ70 · 1 pointr/gshock

The best negative display currently available would probably be the GD350-1B.

Get a Solar/Multi-band watch. If you're using it for the military, any G-Shock will do, but unless you're a pipe-hitter from day 1, any watch will suffice.

If I did it over again, I would get the Timex Ironman 100 for PT/training and the GWM5610 for everyday use. Those both will last longer than your first enlistment.

Amazon had it, but you're right, the direct link to it is a blank now. This is from cache:

It looks no different at all from my US Version.

I get all my Gshocks on Amazon. Not sure how good amazon is in the UK though.
There's the normal 5610 with the red stripe around it,

A negative display 5610 (I'd stay away from negative display watches as the legibility is less than perfect at lower light levels)

A blue tinted one

And a green tinted one that I cant find the link to but it's probably not readily available.
