The CAP bench? It works fine for me; it is light like the rack, but apart from an accidental stab wound I gave it (that I even cautioned myself about, but I was all "I'll be fine I won't slip... shit"), it looks fine. The padded bars for the leg extension/curls aren't very well secured, but once I centered the bars I wrapped some duct tape around them several times so they wouldn't slide. Not that they really did before, but the potential for sliding seemed there. Now the pads fit more snugly and the bars can't slide back and forth. Well worth it for the price IMO.

As for the durability, I weigh 200 lbs. and I've benched 225 on it; it didn't exhibit any signs of stress. I haven't experienced instability on my puzzle mat or the concrete floor. I can't speak for the Pure Fitness model, but it looks about the same.

The only odd thing about the Cap bench is the weight bar is like 3/4 inch diameter, which fits my smaller dumbbell plates great, but is a bit small for the standard 2" cast iron barbell plates, so if I use those they slide a bit. The Pure Fitness looks like it has a 2" diameter weight bar which would better accommodate barbell plates. I was lucky I bought these because the weights are a perfect fit for the Cap bench.

So is it the best I've ever used? Absolutely not. But it works great for bench, incline, decline, military press, and leg work. For the price it's great, though that pure fitness model looks like it could be the better buy if you've already got 2" plates and don't need a rack.

Alright well I've looked up some stuff, your going to want a power cage with olympic weights and a bench at the bare minimum.

Some stuff I've found about $950 before shippping:
cage 390: https://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/t-3-racks/titan-t-3-series-short-power-rack-36-deep.html
Titan cages aren't as nice as rogue, but they are still very nice cages that has a wide variety of attachments you can have. Since your on a somewhat limited budget and this will save you $400

weights/bar 190: https://www.walmart.com/ip/CAP-Barbell-300-lb-Olympic-Set-Includes-7-Bar/27137654?u1=V1c5ZTFRb0tNcXdBQVNnclhqWUFBQUND&oid=368707.1&wmlspartner=NKa3hZyYoHA&sourceid=32308939332914019695&affillinktype=10&veh=aff
This is a very cheap set, but this will get you some starter weights and a starter bar. Since your a complete beginner, this bar should be fine for a while. Most bars will bend before they break so you'll know when you need to replace it, but probably around a 315 squat or deadlift.

bench incline/decline 300: https://www.amazon.com/Rep-Adjustable-Bench-Capacity-Incline/dp/B00YNS7D9G/ref=sr_1_17?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1500496016&sr=1-17&keywords=adjustable+bench
I don't know a lot about this bench, but I like it because it has a high weight capacity and it is incline and decline. This will give you a much wider range of stuff to do vs a flat or just an incline bench.

landmine attachemnt for cage 30: https://www.titan.fitness/landmine-rack-attachment.html
A landmine is super nice for rows and I even use it for shoulders

adjustable dumbbells 41: https://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Solid-20-Inch-Dumbbell-Handle/dp/B0010YOBB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500496213&sr=8-1&keywords=adjustable+olympic+dumbbells
Adjustable dumbbells, more inconvenient than individual weights or the quick change sets, but this gives you a lot of flexibility for very cheap and you can re use the weights you already have.

EDIT:

Since I'm still about 800 short I'l throw some more suggestions:

Maybe upgrade the bar - this way you don't need to worry about it bending on you or you growing out of it while your in college. The rogue bars are suggested a lot on here because they are good quality for their price. They should hold up for a very very long time and be a nice bar. When looking for a bar, the only thing you really need to look at is weight capacity and the knurling (groves in the bar for grip). You probably want center knurling for your squats. There are other factors with bars like the amount of whip, how much the collars spin and such but you'll pretty much want a good quality general purpose bar.
$275
http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-ohio-power-bar

Lat pulldown / cable row machine $200
https://www.amazon.com/Akonza-Machine-Fitness-Attachment-Pulldown/dp/B01FYLE7OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500497021&sr=8-1&keywords=cable+pulldown+machine
I know nothing about this particular machine, but it looks like it has decent reviews. This will allow you to do rows and pull downs.

You may want to build a platform for your cage, you'll want to do this with plywood and horsestall mats so that you can do deadlifts without breaking your floor. This will probably run you 300, probably less, but lets go with 300.

Suh from Waterloo.

So when I was building my homegym I was also debating the fitness depot stuff - went to the actual store and jiggled/empty bar squatted out of that squat stand and a few of the racks. The squat stand was 'okay' at best. If you were set on fitnessdepot (for $$ reasons) I would pick this rack instead:

http://www.fitnessdepot.ca/H11OTO1027676/strength/strength-equipment/power-racks-smith-machines/northern-lights-power-rack-full-cage-nlpowrbund.html#.WTxaemjyuUk

It felt surprisingly solid but sadly I cannot give you a real review since I didn't actually put weight onto it and obviously didn't use it for any length of time. However for the price it did seem usable. I am only 165 pounds though so you might want to give it a jiggle yourself.

Also I'd advise checking out the 2x3" hole spacings on their other racks. Some of the attachments like the lat-pulldown were surprisingly functional but they only fit certain racks.

The squat stand just wasn't as robust and I want to feel safe while I'm working out. The footprint of that rack versus the squat stand is also not that different which surprised me.

As for the hex bar, my neighbor has the exact same bar and it's only 'okay' as well. If I was buying one for my home gym I would probably get this one from Cap on amazon.ca:
https://www.amazon.ca/Cap-Barbell-Olympic-2-Inch-Combo/dp/B004X1674A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1497128109&sr=8-2&keywords=cap+barbell+hex

I don't really have a strong opinion of the hex bars but since you are taller you might want to go with the hex bar that has higher handles. The fitnessdepot hex bar does the job for us because:

  1. neighbor is 6'2" and handles are nice and high
  2. we have more bumper plates than iron plates and the sleeves are decently long

So something to consider for yourself.

    Hope this helps

I hate my local gym(s). So. Damn. Much. I know it's just me. I'm impatient, intolerant, and generally just can't stand the douchers everywhere. So, I finally finished up my garage gym. It's not pretty, but it works. I just need a few more plates, and a really good deal on a row machine (and to clean up the other half of the garage).

Strength Training:

u/butka · 9 pointsr/homegym

An unintended beauty I found with building a home gym is that because of budget restraints for most of us, you're often forced to boil down your routine into the basics early on. To me that's a wonderful thing. I've been a far more productive lifter focusing on more basic lifts and forgetting about all the ancillary isolation exercises. Granted, your lifting routine doesn't seem to get cute with the iso work. So I guess my point is, get what you need for the big lifts now. You can figure out alternatives to your complimentary lifts with what you have. For example, using different pull up grips, or using inexpensive bands as support in your pullups if you need to go high reps (in place of lat pulldowns) are possibilities.

In time, you'll get pieces here and there to add further variety. Many of these gyms you see here have evolved over time. Be patient, you'll be accumulating complimentary pieces in no time.

My advice is to put money in:

  • a decent rack that has a lot of supporting accessories (Titan is a good brand for this)

  • a sturdy bench (I like my Rep Fitness adjustable bench)

  • some horse stall mats - I personally think a platform may not be necessary unless you're doing olympic lifts, and dropping from up high. I've deadlifted 500+ on 3/4" horse stall mats alone, with no damage to the concrete beneath.

  • Dick's runs great deals for 300 lbs olympic weight sets (I've seen as low as $179). The bars that come with this are crap, but could last you 6 months if you're not going to heavy or beating on it until you get a good bar. Some people have been able to flip the bar immediately for money on Letgo or Craigslist.

  • Solid barbell... look for deals, I got this one for $80 after some weird instant rebate on Amazon last July. It was posted in this forum. There's plenty of good barbells out there, just a little research should land you a decent one.
  • Landmine - Best bang for the buck in my gym. I got one like this for ~$23 around the holidays. You can add a ton of variety to your workout. Just google 'landmine exercises'. You can put that cheap bar that came with the Dicks' set in there.
u/reyomnwahs · 5 pointsr/homegym

I have a Valor BD-7, which is nothing special, but there's two things I like about it that might be worth considering for power racks.

  1. The majority of the random rack accessories out there seem to be 2x2, so for example I've added extra spotter bars, another set of long spotter arms so I can bench outside the rack, and some better J-hooks than the ones it came with.

Sure, accessories exist for 2x2.5 or 2x3, but 2x2 with 1" holes gives you a lot more stuff to choose from in my experience.

  2. I like having an upper / lower cable pull, personally. A lot of people end up fabricating or buying one of the Spud sets but having it built-in is nice.

Bench wise, it may not matter to you, but if you're already getting something with a leg hold-down, you might as well look for one that has a modular leg extension and a preacher bench that you can swap in and out.
u/beowulf_71 · 3 pointsr/homegym

So from the other replies, sounds like you are in a dilemma with being able to spend more on something better/safer. I would agree with another poster if you could save a bit more and purchase the Fitness Reality cage you would be better off. The problem with that cage, like another said, that I see is the lower range max weight it handles. You say you wont go above 140, and maybe so.. but if you get in to this more you may wish you had spent the extra to get a cage that can grow with you. More so, just because you wont go up to the max doesnt mean it may not fail near the max.

If the FR is just way too out of your range regardless, and you might be in a better position to purchase something better later should you need it, then I wouldnt wait on starting to work out and buy the rack. But like another said, you need a decent bar, weights, etc. If you dont have those, are you able to get those too?

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/homegym

Sorry for the confusion about the bar, I was referring to this one.

https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-2-Inch-7-Feet/dp/B000RNSDKE

You can usually find then on Craigslist, but for $180 a 1500lb tolerance (according to them) bar is still a great deal.

In regards to the rack, I think my experience would be better if I had found this in say a commercial gym or training facility with more space. When space is limited and you HAVE to lift inside, it is a huge hassle for squats, deadlifts, and benching. It's basically impossible to deadlift in this rack if you have attached plate storage.

When you can lift outside the rack, it becomes infinitely better. But again, for most home gyms space is an issue and a lot of us have to lift inside. Plus, with the safety system the way it is, it is designed to be squatting/deadlifting within the 24 inches.

u/DitchWitch13 · 2 pointsr/homegym

I have something like this tucked under one of the legs of my rack (not a T-2, but pretty similar) and it works fine. The Fitness Reality one has bolts over the top of the post to hold it down better if you want it more secure or don't want the knob sticking out. Mine doesn't move, though I sometimes catch bands or cables on the knob.

u/LB54 · 3 pointsr/homegym

There's a "mega" trap bar on Amazon with iirc a longer sleeve length and a 1000 weight capacity for under $100. Haven't checked it in a while, price is usually around $92 with free shipping

Edit: price is up to $125 again, but the bar is 64" end to end with a sleeve length of 13" on each side compared to 56" of the Titan bar (so it says). This bar is also ~75lbs empty

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004X167A4/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497486930&sr=8-1-fkmr0&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=monster+trap+bar

I've had my eye on this for a while though haven't got it yet. I'll check CamelCamelCamel on this when I get home, shows the price fluctuations. If you have time to wait for the bar I'd choose this one, though Titan is not bad either. And I've personally had very good luck with Titan gear, always been great for me

I finally got fed up with going to my overcrowded gym that only had one squat rack and decided to join the home gym club. This room was previously a home theatre room but we weren’t watching much TV in there anyways. I figured a home gym would be a better use of the room and our time. I had considered a garage gym but didn’t want to lose our covered parking spots or deal with extreme temperatures. The room was completely open on one side so the first thing I did was build sliding barn doors to cover it up and keep the kids out. This was my first ever woodworking project so I’m pretty proud of myself! I laid down the stall mats directly over the existing carpet. They felt a little springy when I first put them down but two weeks later, they now feel much firmer. I taped them together with gorilla tape but it isn’t staying down quite as well as I’d hoped (if anyone has any other suggestions for keeping stall mats in place, please let me know). All in all, am loving my decision. I spent a little over $2K but that will pay for itself in about 4 years now that I have cancelled the gym membership. I plan on working out much longer than that anyways!

Rep Fitness Home Gym Package Comes with rack, bench, barbell, bumper plates, dip bars and rings. This thing is solid and doesn’t take up a lot of space. I also got the adjustable bench upgrade and extra bumper plates. Bumper plates: 8x45, 2x25, 2x10. Change plates 2x 5, 2x 2.5. I had them swap out the 35 lb plates that came with the package for 45s. Total olympic weight: 445 lbs (490 lbs with 45 lb barbell) Total price $1450

200 lb adjustable dumbbell set. $173

15 lb aluminum training barbell (for my wife) $119

Rowing Machine (Goes for $300, purchased for $150 on Craigslist)

5 horse stall mats from Tractor Supply Company, $200

The resistance bands set is from Bodylastics and was purchased years ago for around $50 I think.

For the barn doors, I bought a track kit for $135 on Amazon and the lumber, screws and stain was around $150.

I made a thread, check my post history. The rings I do push-ups, fly, row, dips, etc etc.

I got my barbell from Rogue in their clearance area. It's the B&R bar since I like the feel of raw metal. The knurling isn't too bad.

Editing to add more: Here's a link to build your own platform that I followed. It would be better to have a helper with the materials because they're kinda heavy to lift/position by yourself. Especially the horse mat. I used 3/4" plywood and 3/4" MDF for the top part so I used 3/4" horse mat to try to make things as flush as possible.

I got this flat bench from Amazon. I'm happy with it. An adjustable would have been preferred but this serves it's purpose just fine and didn't break the bank.

Here are the rings I have, also from Amazon. I compared them to my friends Rogue rings and the differences are minimal. They might be a little "rough" but after using them for a bit, they'll break in and be fine.

All said and done, my whole setup was right around $1500 and I can do almost anything I want.

u/spbx · 1 pointr/homegym

Thanks! I heard the same thing about deadlifting with this bar. A rogue Ohio is on the list for sure! And probably another pair of 45 plate that are standard height.

I wouldn't be opposed to a new rack, either - do you have any cost efficient recommendations that would do the trick?

edit: https://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-7-Power-Attachment/dp/B002EJC990

Here's one I saved a while ago. I'm assuming this would be viable for face pulls as well, yes?

Looks like a nice space! It might be worth looking into some inexpensive LED tube lighting on Amazon to brighten it up a bit. Check these bad boys out! Super affordable and easy to install and makes a world of a difference on dark winter days.

I bought a pair of these (PowerBlock Elite Set Dumbell, 50-Pound (pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G7RHGNY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_sZXywbKQBE45X) a little while back. I love them and can do a variety of exercises at home while watching tv. I think they're worth the cost and would recommend buying a good pair of dumbells like this.

u/DynoMenace · 1 pointr/homegym

I just ordered a set of the Bowflex version. You can get regular weights cheaper, sure, but I wanted something that saved space and required a little less hassle to adjust.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ARYU58/

Looks like the sale is still active at the time of this writing.

u/Unusual_Future · 3 pointsr/homegym

I got these are they are great. Easy install and lights up my garage nicely. Only issue is that one came in with a dent in the plastic housing of the light. It didn't cause any issues though. There are plenty of other posts about these lights on here as well.

Barrina LED T5

u/refotsirk · 2 pointsr/homegym

Yeah, I took my squats up to 315 lbs in this:

Cap Barbell Deluxe Power Rack (FM-CB8000F) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I04Z52G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_oGoZCbB4KT6W0

It is solid and goes on sale for 160 usually on black Friday. Rack is rated at 600 lbs but safeties only to 300 lbs, and I bent one of the safety pins a bit rowing 250ish dead stop kinda hard. Still I think you'd be better served with a titan T2 or Fitness Reality 810XLT full cage with the Amazon essentials flat bench (look up coops somewhat humurous review of it) at ~350 total cost racks and bench) as a starter IMO and get a good adjustable later as an upgrade.

u/bobgodd2 · 5 pointsr/homegym

That's a great big space, you're very fortunate.

Landmines are pretty inexpensive: https://www.amazon.com/Yes4All-616320919672-T-Bar-Row-Platform/dp/B01077P1W2/

But I always appreciate a clever or well done DIY project.

u/PlaceboDefect · 2 pointsr/homegym

Bang for your buck, Titan makes a really nice rack.

Pulley system there's a lot of options. If you're handy, you could even go DIY on this route. Here's a popular one for reference.

Or you could go for an all in one rack, something like the Valor BD-7. I don't know much about it personally.

GHD is a glute hamstring developer. It's the icing on the cake on leg day. There's solo machine, rack attachements, and DIY options on these as well.

u/kiffren · 1 pointr/homegym

I've read a ton of reviews of power racks recently and think I've finally narrowed it down. Right now I'm using a shitty bench with vertical bars that I'm pretty much at the weight limit for.

I'm looking at getting the Rep PR 1100 with dip bars and this bench. I live in colorado so I can in person pick up the power rack and not have to pay shipping.

My budget is right around $300 and since it's probably not safe for me to use my current bench much longer I can't really afford to wait and save up for a really nice power rack.

Is there any reason not to get this combo? I weigh 145lbs and I'm currently benching 150lbs. It looks like this combination will last me a good while and meet all of my current needs.

u/HamHockMcGee · 2 pointsr/homegym

Instead of buying a dip attachment, buy a pair of gymnastic rings on Amazon for 30-40 dollars. Rings would allow you to do pull ups as well as some other exercises. It is likely cheaper. A dip attachment for your rack will certainly be needed as you'll likely be dipping 2-3 plates. If you're not into weighted dips, consider it as an option.

Here's an example:

https://www.amazon.com/Diameter-Gymnastics-Rings-Buckle-Straps/dp/B00SAEPY72/ref=sr_1_4?

u/DevilBomb76 · 1 pointr/homegym

The red band is good for pull aparts, I'd think the rest would be too heavy.

Here's the set I have: LINK
It has the smaller yellow band that's perfect for lighter rehab/prehab stuff.
It comes with handles but I wouldn't recommend using them. Too much risk of cutting the bands with the caribiner.
Still going strong after a year+ of use.

Also, I'd recommend getting the set. For under $40 you get 5 bands and I guarantee you'll find uses for the other sizes

u/binomine · 2 pointsr/homegym

Seems expensive for what you're getting.

For twice the price, Here, you can get a bar that will last you for a long, long while.

That bar in the link is good for 700 pounds, which is a pretty good deadlift.

That Apex bar is only good until about 250 pounds, which is a month or two of deadlifting. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you're planning on doing endurance exercises with low weights.

u/Pristinejake · 3 pointsr/homegym

One for 400$ on amazon that I bought. It was the cheapest one they had. I really like it

Valor Fitness BD-7 Power Rack with LAT Pull Attachment & Pull Up Station https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002EJC990/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_cAKpDb4XG3CP0

I just saw another one for the same price that comes with a bunch of attachments.

So I'm looking at a CAP power rack for my girlfriend because she's weaker than me, and a Titan series short rack for myself. She'll be fine with a 300 lb limit for a while, but if want a 600 lb for myself. Are these the best two for the price at our weight requirements?

u/hank_chinaski_82 · 1 pointr/homegym

kettlebells: start with a 16 kilogram KB. If I could only have ONE kettlebell, I'd prob choose a 24 kilo one, but jumping right into a 24 may be tough.

For dumbbells, a 5-50 set will cover all your bases for a while.
https://www.amazon.com/PowerBlock-Elite-Dumbell-50-Pound-pair/dp/B00G7RHGNY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=powerblock&qid=1562383190&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1

You can get those for around 220-230 on sale from amazon if you are patient. That set is good because as you get stronger, you can pick up the 70 lb and 90 lb add on kits. They take up so little space compared to individual dumbbells in 5 pound increments.

u/batardo · 1 pointr/homegym

I have a studio apartment and use a half rack (something kind of like this but not exactly). Then I have an adjustable bench that goes under it. It's great for squats and benching. Then I have a custom-built narrow deadlift platform made of plywood topped with foam. You don't really need a huge platform unless you want to do Oly lifts, which probably isn't happening in your apartment.

If I were to do it again, I'd probably go even smaller (and cheaper) by getting squat stands like these. A rack is probably a little sturdier, but the stands are more versatile. You could probably rig them up to do dips off of, which is something I don't currently have equipment for.

u/yetanothernerd · 3 pointsr/homegym

Great that someone's making a cheap one.

I use a $10 wedge instead. https://amazon.com/Dead-Wedge-Alternative-Powerlifting-Weightlifting/dp/B00TVVBD6O/

I used to just use a 5# plate. I think the wedge is worth $10 because the curve holds the innermost plate in place so it doesn't roll. But if you have hex plates, or really don't want to spend $10, using a 5# plate works fine.

u/southernm · 2 pointsr/homegym

Could you fit a 48" cage where you would be working inside of it?
https://www.amazon.com/Titan-Short-Power-Squat-Deadlift/dp/B00NAHQP90

I got these from Amazon and I'm pretty happy with them now that I have the stand. Nothing plastic about them. My only complaint is the knurling is basically non-existent.

I actually prefer them to the Powerblock Elite dumbbells that I bought and returned, and they're less than half the price.

u/duffman13jws · 1 pointr/homegym

T-2 Owner here - the yes4all one from amazon works pretty well for me too - lift one side and just slide it under the rail, then it clamps down.

Try something like this or this or this.

Your problem is why I always advise people, buy a FULL RACK; never a half rack. Half racks are half the functionality with all the footprint and pretty near all the price as well.

u/pdgx · 2 pointsr/homegym

I looked at those, too, but ended up buying these because I just couldn't justify the cost, esp since I would have had to buy additional plates.

I over estimated most of the prices, but these are things I figured I would need in a home gym if I ever build one. If you take out a few, you can make it fit your budget.

Adjustable dumbells: $100 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0087T8UOE/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new)

About $2629 without treadmill, and $5729 with treadmill. Another few hundred for some mirrors and paint.

I would go for the rack since it's a lot more versatile than any individual piece of equipment. Also 8x8 isn't very big so you'll want to eliminate as many unitaskers as possible. With a budget of $600 you should try and look at used equipment on OfferUp or Craigslist to get better quality equipment, but new is not out of the question.

Here's a list of what you can get for a pretty decent setup at $600...

(Prices are sale prices. Sign up for CamelCamelCamel or Keepa and set alerts for the items on Amazon. The frequently go down to the prices listed)

Item | Price
---|---
Fitness Reality 810XLT Power Rack | $150
Fitness Reality Adjustable Bench | $85
CAP Barbell 300 lb. Olympic Grip Weight Set | $180
4 ft. x 6 ft. x 3/4 in. Thick Rubber Stall Mat | $40 x 3
Valor Fitness MB-A BD-7 Dip Handle Accessory Set | $35
CAP Barbell Olympic 2-Inch Plate and Bar Storage Rack | $30

That gets you to the $600 budget on the dot.

This should cover most of your needs. You can replace the plate tree with some Titan weight pegs to hang from the rack if you want that instead. You can also just throw some plywood on the floor instead of the floor mats or mix and match plywood and floor mats.

This is almost the same setup I have except I was able to pick up some dumbells and plates off OfferUp so it came out a little cheaper. So far my home gym setup is at $520 and all I'm missing is the stall mats so I should be hitting the $600 goal myself once I get those.

two sets of these. doing X pulls, bilateral rows, extra resistance for DLs, all sorts of stuff

Edit: also, kettlebells from /u/kettlebellkings . I have three sets from them and I love every one

If you want your feet to firmly touch the ground, bench height will matter. Many adjustable benches are taller than standard. 17" to top of pad seems to be the standard, so look for something that height or lower. This one is recommended a lot and is 17.5" but out of stock:

https://www.repfitness.com/strength-equipment/strength-training/benches/rep-ab-3100-adjustable-bench-v2

I have these bands in my Amazon cart for when I decide if I want bands. This is based on seeing them recommended several times:

It does not come with a barbell, it comes with a chin up bar that mounts to the top. Still a great price IMO for beginners, I've heard nothing but good things about this company.

I have a small cheap setup currently with a shitty benching rack with the built in bench. I want this rack so I can squat without almost dying.

For a bench if you're just doing something like normal stronglifts with normal flat bench go with: a Marcy Flat Utility Weight Bench, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G44X9D6/ref=cm_sw_r_api_iFzLxb10MB8ZR. Really cheap and well built.

When you start getting into the adjustable type of bench, that's when it becomes bitch. The prices shoot up. For adjustable I'd go with this guy: adidas Utility Bench https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0184R8VD8/ref=cm_sw_r_api_jJzLxbXTAEZPS. Cheap and not too badly built, it's only weighted to 300 pounds so it's obviously not gonna work for long (if you're getting strong and bigger ;)) it's pretty stupid that it has a leg attachment but you can most likely get away with just skipping it's installation.

For a bar, you want Olympic. Look on Amazon, CAP makes cheap stuff that will work until you get big enough to go model and make money.

I have the OB-86B, its nice, I just wish it had slightly more aggressive knurling. For the price its going for, I'd rather pick up the PB for $5 more http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RNSDKE

If carries, I'd avoid longer 6' or 7' trap bars, especially rackable. Since you're using bumpers, you don't want anything with short sleeves either (Titan or other cheaper chrome or cap bars) since you'll quickly run out of sleeve space. You'd be happy with something in the middle. Here's my top picks for you:

u/scienceandmathteach · 1 pointr/homegym

I was going to bolt it down at the beginning, but once I loaded the weights on it, it's solid. Just tossed some of these on it as well.

u/Chron_X · 1 pointr/homegym

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-2-Inch-Combo/dp/B004X1674A

I maxed it out on Rogue echo bumpers at 360 pounds, and went back to standard barbell deadlifts exclusively. Im not sure what movements you'll be doing, but if it's hex bar deadlifts, you'll probably need to buy something else if you're near that weight range or inspiring to surpass it.

u/wuigukin · 1 pointr/homegym

I got this slightly cheaper one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G44X9D6/

Though they both say 600lbs so the bench material might be similar. As long you keep your weight over the legs it's probably fine? Just wanted to recommend some caution.

u/Fdeecgggv · 2 pointsr/homegym

This attachment will work I’ve had one before and it works well.

The half rack I bought, (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I04Z52G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00) while it is working out really well, sadly has a good amount of side to side sway. Bolting it down to my platform, seems to of helped that quite a bit, although it still has some moevment at the top (+/-1.5" sway)

u/mantis-_-tobogan · 1 pointr/homegym

We have the rep fitness equipment pckg and upgraded to the adjustable bench and added dip handles. Really great quality and def recommend.

We have 2 other random bars and weights for lighter lifting that my dad gave us. Not sure they're a necessity, but they're nice to have.

For dumbbells, we have adjustable to 50 lb bowflex and a smattering of smaller weights mostly for drop sets. (Adjustable weights during a drop set is a bitch unless you have 2 sets, idk.) The misc dumbbells were almost all garage sale finds and for their purpose I'm glad I didn't buy new.

Bowflex has adjustables that go up higher (to 70lb), and in less than a year of lifting my husband thinks he needs the upgrade. Either way we need 2 sets since we overlap during our workouts, but...$500 makes me queasy.

Overall, I like the bowflex compared to some of the other adjustable weights, but they are also weird and clunky. I'm short, w t-Rex arms though, so...

I haven't used the rack from Dicks, but I recently got the Valor BD-7 from Amazon. It's about the same price, but includes cables for pull-downs and seated rows. I believe they both have the same max weight for the catch bars, but I'm not 100% confident. In any case, I really like the BD-7, so I'd recommend it over the Dick's rack.

u/ErtaySh · 1 pointr/homegym

Here are some rings on Amazon.

Idea is to hang them on the pull up bar on the rack and do exercises like dips and much more.

u/TheSlowestBr0 · 2 pointsr/homegym

Amazon has a Valor Fitness Lat Pulldown for $279. A lot of home gyms tend to disfavor something so single-purpose, but it might suit your needs!

u/twichyy · 2 pointsr/homegym

I recommend this new one that costs $150 new from Amazon, currently out of stock because they sold crazy fast. My opinion may be skewed since I helped design and test it:

If you hadn't seen this already, here's the rack itself with a few more reviews, if that helps. The bench also seems to be a near-identical re-brand of this one, so those reviews may be worth looking at.

The main problem I have is that these products seem to be fairly new, so I wonder if they'll stand the test of time.

You can't go wrong with any of those choices. I went full rack over half rack because of height issues and they tend to have the same footprint anyway, and they're usually not cheaper. Full rack tends to have more options down the line.

The goto r/homegym package is incredible bang for your buck:

u/SlapnutsOGrady · 1 pointr/homegym

I picked these up for $35 on Amazon. Straps and rings are heavy duty and feel like they will last forever. Only negative is I wish the straps had markings on them so I could quickly adjust the height for dips, rows, pushups during my workout.

u/TheAssh0le · 1 pointr/homegym

I bought this one; http://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Weight-2-Inch-Plated-Olympic/dp/B004X167A4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1425331970&sr=8-5&keywords=trap+bar

It's the same as the one you're looking at just a little heavier capacity. You get what you pay for with this one. The finish is tacky, the welds are ugly, and there's no rotating sleeves. However, it's 100% solid so far. It's half the price of the competition and does exactly what it's supposed to do with no signs of breaking, like ever.

Also, the trap bar deadlift is a much stronger lift than the barbell deadlift. 750# is definitely achievable with time.

u/putterbum · 2 pointsr/homegym

If you're using olympic style plates I would just suggest getting these.

u/Yewka · 3 pointsr/homegym

Nice setup! I'm not sure what your fitness goals are, but I would look into getting an EZ bar, and maybe even some dumbells. I've always wanted these bad boys, but they probably arn't cost effective.

Edit: deleted extra letter.

u/joshtheraider · 1 pointr/homegym

No cables yet. This is arriving in a few weeks.

The single extension is what I'm looking for solutions for. I don't have true dumbells, just handles. But, to load the handles to a heavy enough weight, I have to use all my 10's and 5's OR use larger diameter plates.

Which bonk ma' noggin'.

I use a trap bar. You can easily use bands with that, in addition to plates. A couple Dead Wedges are always good to have. Cheap.

Even without the platform, I think you will run into trouble on pullups. That bar is at 80", leaving you five inches to get your head above the bar before hitting the ceiling, or three with your platform. Nah.

Remember that there is a short version of the T2, 71.5" high.

u/inlawoutlaw · 1 pointr/homegym

Sadly, the manufacturer of my current rack doesn't make safety bars for it, and the hole spacing is abnormal, so off-brand accessories are also not an option.

Just picked up the black one. Bought the zinc plated one before & flipped it. I regretted once I sold it. Can hold a lot more weight than most trap bars.

u/MattAtUVA · 6 pointsr/homegym

I use the Cap Mega Trap Bar, and love it. I has longer sleeves than most trap bars, which helps for loading up bumper plates. It hits my quads a little more than normal barbell deadlifts, but there's almost no pressure on my lower back. Also I can trap bar deadlift about 20lbs more than a normal deadlift.

I don't know of any trap bars with handles that are inline with the loading sleeves, like a normal barbell. But, the perpendicular handles feel more natural to me, somewhat like dumbbell squats, but with my deadlift level of weight.

I don't know of any with adjustable handles. However, you can turn over the trap bar so the handles face downward, and, hence, you'll be starting about 2" lower.
