I have a pair of M-Audio BX5s that are great entry level monitors. I've been using them for a year now and think they are great for mixing. They are very good for their price.

There are other options but these seem to be the most popular for most people. Between these two I think it’s a choose of price and personal preference.
Im running a 2017 Macbook pro so im pretty sure it will support fire wire. But if it doesn't work with OS 10.10 then it doesn't seem like a good fit for me. Im looking at getting this but I am hesitant because like you mentioned I may need more inputs in the future. So I will probably continue looking for an interface that supports about 8 inputs.

This is from the new Scarlett series. Scarlett series have much better Amps than the other audio interfaces.
