I have no experience with the course so I can't comment, but I think you can cook a fantastic brisket on your own just by reading and watching what the "pros" do and copying it. Aaron Franklin is pretty generous with is expertise and I've found his videos helpful. Amazingribs.com is also a helpful, if thorough, place to read up on cooking pretty much anything you can put in a smoker.

Buy one of these in 18" or 22" and experiment with different recipes and see which one you like best. Spend the money you would have spent on the course on brisket and that way you can invite your friends over and get their feedback. You can get away with using a charcoal grill but you'll have to be careful to keep the meat away from direct heat or else it will become tough.

There's really not that much to it - keep the smoker at 225 degF and keep the brisket in there until it reaches 205 degF internal temp (buy a digital thermometer, wireless is better), then wrap it and rest it for a couple of hours.

The most important thing is to buy good meat - Costco sells prime brisket for $3-4/lb which is about as good a value as you'll find anywhere.

For everyone asking about dash cams, here are a couple of links that I think will help. They're really not very expensive and can be installed for free by you if you don't mind a little effort (or a wire to your cigarette lighter), or you can get one hardwired (with the wire tucked away so it's barely noticeable) for $50-$100 from a local car stereo shop. The good thing is they're small and don't really stick out like a GPS, so they're not really going to raise the chances of someone breaking into your car to get at it.

This is a wonderful review site for those of you who like to research things before buying.

Here's their best value cam in all black from Amazon.

Here's the one I'm using which is just a little more money but also a tiny bit better in quality (you won't notice a huge difference, I just like the style better).

And here's a 32GB microSDHC memory card that you'll need.

To address the question that usually comes up, they record in loops. That means they record in segments of a few minutes (usually 3, 5, or 10 minute files) and then once the card fills up, they start recording over the oldest files first. 32GB is usually enough space for 5 hours of recording. Yes, you can usually click a button if you record something (or get into an accident) that will tag the last file to not ever get recorded over. They do record sound as well. Neither of those have GPS but you can get some more expensive ones that do.

I'd totally recommend getting a dashcam if you're a driver in Houston as if there's ever an accident you're involved in and not at fault, now you have a very good chance at having proof that it wasn't your fault, which can go a loooong way with insurance. Also, you can capture stuff like op here did, along with you know, russian dashcam worthy footage on occasion. :)

I've had friends have theirs confiscated. So they got creative.

ShampBooze bottles

Sunscreen bottles These worked great for ACL last year!

"Protection" seals

Ice Pak Flask this will be another ACL for me this year

"Sealed" caps for water bottles (Also ACL approved)

Insect Repellant

A whole smuggle bottle kit

And your standards

You can also put anything in a mouthwash bottle, so long as you're not opposed to a few drops of food colouring.

edited cos I always eff up formatting

I agree with most of your comment and don't mean to be contumelious but:

> If they're not in the safe (if I'm going to the range), there's a trigger lock on them. They're unloaded and the ammunition is locked away also.

In the unlikely event you need to use your firearm for self defense you may find that too many safety precautions can inhibit your ability to get your firearm in time.

I would recommend the Gunvault I have the deluxe version out of sight and bolted to a shelf.

EDIT: I misread this to read that it was locked in the safe AND had a trigger lock AND had ammunition locked separately! Leaving this up for the Gunvault recommendation.

This one is not the best, but it gets the job done and is pretty cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/2-5-inch-Vehicle-Recorder-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B0053DDNW6/ref=sr_sp-btf_title_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1404912766&sr=8-10

It will take me a while to find the one that is higher quality and a lot more popular. Black something.

I did it myself for about $10 of parts. You buy a fuse tap, and a 12-5v converter, something like this and this, and plug the dash cam power cable into the converter. I tapped my windshield wipers, in the interior fuse box, so that it would only be powered on when the car is in the "on" position. Getting a correct ground connection to the frame of the car is the most important part, i used a screw next to my interior fuse box. All the extra cabling fit neatly next to my interior fuse box.

Yes, that was the original downtown, before all the skyscrapers got built south of that along Louisiana. Back in the CBD's heyday, that area used to have some GRAND houses and mansions. Check out this book, Houston: Lost and Unbuilt, to see everything else we demolished.

I leave it in and it's hooked up to the 12V socket. Most are designed to be pretty hard to notice, and it's only powered on when the power is turned on.

I have a B40C and an A119C.

They're easy to remove if you choose to take them out of your car when you leave it, usually just snapping onto the mount. Depending on the model, some need to be re-hooked up, but some are wired to a GPS mount and the camera itself can just snap in and out easily.

Get one!

It's not going to be cheap since it's likely the dog has internal injuries. Take him/her to the closest emergency vet ASAP. A quick google search should suffice in finding a place. There's this one in Galleria/Uptown area Animal Emergency Clinic

After they have him back there you can talk to the front desk people about setting up a payment plan and if they aren't helpful talk to the vet about it. You can also sign up for a care credit account and pay it off through them. You can check it out here

Dogs typically have a high pain tolerance and are good at hiding it. Please get to a vet as soon as possible.

And please get a crate for the back of the truck. You can find cheap ones if you keep an eye out at Goodwill, Ross, or Craigs list. Or better yet let him ride in the car with a dog seat belt

Got this one with GPS last April and it's awesome for what I need it to do.

Night video leaves a lot of be desired, but it gets the basic job done fine.

u/duhhuh · 3 pointsr/houston

Yes, and it works pretty well for under $20.

u/parkedr · 2 pointsr/houston

Not really Houston, but since you mentioned the 1900 hurricane, Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson is pretty damn interesting.

May I point you to these series of books written by Robert Caro that goes into detail about how one obtains, keeps, and uses political power?

Once you read them you'll understand how 'the system' works. "The Power Broker" is especially illustrative. One man, Robert Moses, pretty much remade NYC between the 1920's and the 1960's. Never was elected to anything.

I've got two installed, the second one is for the rear both 32GB sd cards and hardwired with the ignition.

Dash cams installed

The front cam is a high heat capacitor, the previous ones I had lasted just past the two-year warranty, the Texas heat blows the battery up even under covered parking. It works fine for the price, up close you'll see plate numbers any movement not so much. Things do look farther away than they seem.

Real world videos

Beltway 8 Benz driver speeding

Benz driver getting cop karma

The rear cam is a cheap $25 Amazon lighting deal, now it is like $39 colors are muted, you can see if someone was on their phone at least.

If you want high end your Go Pro Black series is your choice and there are tons of Youtube videos on different budget priced cams.

I will tell you that the dumptrucks with the sign "we're not responsible for your windsheild", they are when you are three cars behind, didn't secure their load and you have video of their truck lossing rocks left and right.

Get something to protect you while driving and do not infrom any drivers when you're in an accident that you have a cam, let the insurance company catch them in a lie.

Yes it is! I didn't really plan this out. Just took the book on our walk and saw what was close. It is Anne Sloans book. They sell it at CVS and bookstores. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0738571180

I have had the GW1-C in 3 of my vehicles for the past 2 years. Also installed 1 in my father's truck about a year ago. All of them are still going strong no issues. SD cards are still working fine also.

Galveston used to be the larger city, but after the Hurricane of 1900, Houston took over while Galveston tried to rebuild. Source: Issac's Storm. The book also mentions the streetcar.

Does it say the size of the water bottle?

Also, this might help...

That is not remotely what this article says, nor what the concept is.

Again man, enjoy your conspiratorial thinking where science is a lie and you are being scammed by a global cabal millions of people strong to destroy america and conservatism, with the elaborate lies of climate change, and the insane idea that if you want the rise to be kept to a reasonable minimum, you've got twleve years left to do it.

You could just ask Exxon. They knew in 1982.

Liberal exxon. With their insanity that CO2 is a greenhouse gas.

I feel sorry for you, bud. I really, really do. Like I said, I doubt you have done well for yourself.

My dog chews on my drywall during thunderstorm and thundershirt didn't seem to help. Enter this Magical Liquid.

He's been on this regimen for a few months and no damaged wall. I think it's worth a try?

u/ElbowDeepInIt · 2 pointsr/houston

Answer: My hunting rifles and shotguns are locked in the big safe and no, I don't expect them to wait for me. The gun I carry is either on my hip, or in one of these on the nightstand. If they can get in my bedroom and shoot me before I can get my gun, I guess I die knowing I did everything I could to be safe and prepared.

Also, my carry/nightstand pistol is already loaded.

u/StrokeIt416 · 6 pointsr/houston

I would strongly recommend grabbing something like the harness I have linked below. It still allows your pooch the mobility (albeit a tad more limited) but most importantly can help reduce the risk of injury in an accident.

These things aren't expensive if you shop around. I think these things should be in everyone's kit!

Sorry for shit formatting, on phone..

There's a whole book about the lies used to teach kids American History. https://www.amazon.com/Lies-My-Teacher-Told-Everything/dp/0743296281

The truth is a bit too ... gritty. Flawed. Messy. Unpatriotic. So students in college American History classes have to unlearn these lies. People who never take college-level American History (or don't pay attention when they do) won't have these lies corrected, and will continue to believe them. Their votes count just as much as yours.
