16. Campustown: A Brief History of the First West Ames
Sentiment score: 1
Number of reviews: 1
I wrote one a couple years ago. I also occasionally update this blog with stuff.
This City of Ames survey on Campustown, West Gate, and Greekland neighborhoods can get pretty technical but gives a basic overview of the campus vicinity. For campus history, The History of Iowa State College is readily available. The Iowa State University Campus and Its Buildings is rather scholarly and outdated in 2018, but has some fantastic history about how campus was built for its first 120 years. The same goes for The First 100 Years of Residence at Iowa State University. Greek stories can be found in Fraternities and Sororities at Iowa State, which is fantastic. The Bomb archive is great, though quality really varies year to year. There are a couple historical picture books of Ames that are really easy reads along with several niche books about ISU and various colleges and departments -- some good, some too vague, others too technical. Note that most older history books about Ames are slim on ISU and West Ames.
I have a 2015 MBP that I got as a high school graduation gift. I really like it. MacOS is unix based which means that a lot of the knowledge about macOS is directly applicable to *-nix operating systems. Build quality is great. Battery life is still really good after 3 years of daily use.
That being said, if I needed to get a new laptop I would not get a mac because they are so expensive. I would buy a cheap laptop and install linux.
If money is no object, then go for the mac (especially if you're all ready in the Apple ecosystem. Apple is really good at making their products gel together).
But probably you should save your money. I would even say that the surface is probably too expensive at 1000 base price. But amazon has a surface laptop 1 for 50% off, that seems like a much better deal.
Definitely doable. I would recommend this book by Cal Newport to help you through college career. It helped me substantially.
College is all about how you manage your time. I personally know a guy that got a 4.0 in High School and got a 35 on his ACT's and flunked out of college because he spent all of his time partying and playing video games. I also know a guy where I'm constantly thinking "how is this guy an engineer?"
I personally flunked out of Engineering my first semester, but it's 100% because I didn't try and I focused on beating GTA V when it came out instead of focusing on my classes. I transferred from a community college where I thought all the classes would be like that and boy was I wrong. And while I'm not in engineering anymore, I'm 100% certain that I could do engineering now and this is coming from a guy that graduated high school with a 2.53 GPA and a 26 ACT. There are tons of resources like tutoring, SI, and recitations that help you understand the concept and develop into a better student.
I hope you make the right choice and come to Iowa State. And if you want a job as a bus driver in the future, hit me up!
I love my Nspire but nobody is going to show you how to use it, you have to be proactive. I got mine the summer before and watched Youtube tutorials.
For the room here are a couple recommendations:

Assuming you live in the dorms, don't use the WiFi, it really is utter garbage and I never had the patience to use it when I lived in Friely. If you have a device with an Ethernet port, your best bet is too use that, as it is much faster. If you happen to have a device without a Ethernet port, they make usb to Ethernet adapters such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-SuperSpeed-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00BBD7NFU
Hope this helps.
Following up on this since it's a common problem for CS majors especially, I would recommend picking up a copy of the K&R used or otherwise and going through at least the first ½ or ⅔ and trying your hand at the exercises.
If you get through the majority of the book you'll be more than prepared for what 327 will throw at you C-wise.
For C++, Sheaffer does a good job of covering the C++ism's that he expects you to use -- he doesn't like C++ either.
I highly recommend this book. It takes a lot of key concepts on 228 and 311 a d dumbs it down into pictures with psuedocode. I would definitely use this along with the help room if you can.

My roommate keep playing PUBG non-stop every single day or night, chatting and laughing extremely loud. I warned him like thousand times but still no improvements.
I am looking for a new roommate or a new place to stay for the next year now.
Real story.
Edit: also can you imagine I bought 200 pairs of earplugs just for him? I had to wear them every time when I am trying to sleep.
