So the Hachette series has already skipped all the crossovers. There is Revolution, taking place at the end of MTMTE, Windblade and RID. After that is Revolutionaries; all of that can be read before starting Optimus Prime as there's a few months between RID and OP while all the other books continue. First Strike is the last crossover. Tried to restrict continuity notes, let me know if anything isn't clear enough as I might not have been consistent with my edits.

If you like Ian in Revolution and Revolutionaries read the Action Man books I suggest for more of him, but they aren't at all necessary I'm just plugging a book I enjoy with helpful info.

Also apparently Furman has hinted at an extension very recently. Might edit in a link

So

  • Action Man any point before...
  • Titans Return P1 (Hachette)
  • Revolution
  • Revolution Transformers (These can be read between issues of Revolution)
  • Revolution Heroes(Also featuring GI Joe, ROM and Micronauts, but just me plugging Action Man again) (There's a more specific reading list for individual stories)
  • Titans Return P2 + Till All Are One 12 from Requiem of the Wreckers (Why did Hachette put it in this volume?)
  • Revolutionaries (both volumes)
  • New Cybertron (Hachette)
  • 2017 Optimus Prime annual (included in Requiem of the Wreckers Hachette)
  • Primeless (Hachette) (11-12 of Optimus Prime take place during First Strike, could probably be either order)
  • First Strike
  • Optimus Prime Vol 3 (11-14 + Transformers and Revolutionaries First Strike one shots)
  • Till All Are One Annual (Requiem of the Wreckers Hachette)
  • Optimus Prime 2018 Annual included in vol 5
  • Rom vs Transformers Shining Armour (set 200 years ago but reading order works just before Vol 4 of Prime as it introduced a character who then returns in that volume + Space Knights just before their appearance in Unicron)
  • Optimue Prime Vol 4 15-21
  • Transformers vs Visionaries (oh no I have to move Requiem of the Wreckers now I forgot that references this book there's no good place for that Hachette volume)
  • Requiem of the Wreckers (Just that particular book from the Hachette volume Requiem of the Wreckers)
  • Lost Light Vol 3-4 (13-18, 19-25) (Other than 25 these don't have a particular spot on the list, just read the rest some time before Unicron)
  • Unicron
  • Optimus Prime Vol 5 (22-25 + 2018 Annual) (Read Annual earlier)
  • Optimus Prime 25 from vol 5
  • Lost Light 25

EDIT: Have added the two vs series. Generally they've done an alright job with IDW, but that Requiem volume is very much here's all the stuff leftover with no regard for where it should be read. But also Requiem itself is beautiful and I'm glad that both Wreckers and TAAO are complete even without an extension.

I'd recommend The Wreckers Saga. It's available, cheap, self-contained and contains some of the best stories in the continuity. It touches on all the themes and concerns of the other stories without getting too bogged down in continuity and minutia. It also bridges several of the phases - one story in the 'All Hail Megatron' era, one in the 'MTMTE / RID' era and the final one in the 'Lost Light / Optimus Prime' era. But it is written very deliberately so that you don't need to know what else is going on outside of the actual Wreckers stories to follow along.

If you find The Wreckers Saga isn't to your taste you probably won't like any of the various phases and such. If you do, the things you find most interesting about it will guide you towards the best starting point for the rest of the decade.

I think you will be getting this, but it bears repeating: get the Transformers Holiday Special 2015. you will need it for Lost Light and so far it has not been collected in a trade. If you cant find the single issue it is included in the Revolutions Transformers book.
