I read this book - and it is great. Real World Indesign by Olav Kvern and David Blatner

https://www.amazon.ca/Real-World-Adobe-InDesign-CS4/dp/0321592433 I suppose some of it is outdated a bit now, but for me, being new to Indesign, it explains some of the print things as well which was helpful. Turns out one of the guys wrote the help website for Adobe, once I started reading the website, some parts seemed familiar LOL

Edit: here's the CC version https://www.amazon.ca/Real-World-Adobe-InDesign-CC/dp/0321930711/

Haha ;)

Layers just work the same as any other Adobe thing, good for organising things so usually I would put stuff that's in the background that I'd 99% of the time want locked on their own layer – e.g. background images across spreads.

Furniture is just the stuff around a page, so your header/footer rulers, page numbers, section headers, etc. All the stuff that doesn't change throughout a document. It might be called something else but I've always known it as furniture :)

A good book to pick up is https://www.amazon.co.uk/Editorial-Design-Digital-Cath-Caldwell/dp/1780671644 it's magazine/editorial focussed but has plenty useful bits in you can use in corporate designs.

http://www.Lynda.com for tutorials (very helpful, great videos, broken up into logical topics) and the Indesign CS5 Bible for troubleshooting http://www.amazon.com/InDesign-CS5-Bible-Galen-Gruman/dp/0470607165
