Want to hear something really meta?

In 1995, journalist Susan Orlean wrote a brilliant article in the New Yorker called "Orchid Fever," about Florida man who poaches endangered orchids from protected forests. You might think orchids sound lame, but this guy and his story are fascinating. Read the article here:

This guy and his dealings in the underground orchid business were so intriguing, that in 1998, Susan Orlean wrote a nonfiction book called The Orchid Theif that gave further details on him and his obsession.

2002 was the release date for Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation. Here's where it gets meta. In the movie, Nicolas Cage plays the screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. He is tasked with writing the screenplay for the book The Orchid Thief, except he is having trouble creating a storyline because the book sort of meanders. So he gets to know Susan Orlean, played by Meryl Streep. He follows her, and soon discovers she also got caught up in the danger and sexiness of orchid poaching as well.

Cage also plays his twin brother, who is just as socially inept, but far more likeable. Cage's two characters get caught up in some adventures of their own. Cage is great in this movie. He's not so much the typecast National Treasure Nicolas Cage, but more the Raising Arizona Nicolas Cage.

So the book is about Kaufman figuring out how to write a screen adaptation of a nonfiction book that is based on a New Yorker article.

And as if that weren't meta enough, Adaptation includes a crossover scene with Being John Malkovich.

Edit: You don't have to read The Orchid Thief before watching, but do read the article. It paints a good picture of the Florida Man and the various intricacies of the orchid poaching business.

If you love the movie then the book AS YOU WISH written by Carey Ewles(Westley) will be pure enjoyment as well. So many wonderful stories about making the film and the other brilliant actors.

I read this biography on him a few years ago, he was an incredible captain but just couldn't keep his shit together on land! He'd be far more well known if he'd been better at playing the political game but his temper and his ability to make enemies hampered that.

After seeing Master and Commander I'd always hoped that someone would make an adaptation of his life. Ripe for an epic movie, I thought...

That would be a terrible idea and a tragedy, indeed, even if CGI effects make things potentially look so much better than they did in the '80s. Pretty sure it still wouldn't be the same.

Luckily for us, they did actually make a Ghostbusters video game in 2008 or so with all of the original actors (except Rick Moranis, I think), which had a lot of the charm and humor of the first two. Aykroyd even said "It's probably the closest thing to Ghostbusters 3 we'll ever have" or something to that effect. I enjoyed the game mostly for the nostalgia; the game play was fine, but nothing amazing. Definitely worth a play through if you have a chance.

The original book by Christopher Priest that the film is based on is awesome too. It's got a different spin than the movie, but a great weird read.

No, we didn't, but I wish we had thought to include that! We played this collection during the evening, but now that I think of it, we could have also chosen a more secluded room and played "Hugo" as well for anyone looking for a moment of quiet.

Yeah it's this one https://www.amazon.com/Das-Boot-Original-Uncut-Version/dp/B0001XAOLQ

I guess almost 5 hours felt like 6 hours in my memory of it... best version of the movie! It was originally shown on TV as a 6 part series but it is the original movie as intended and not a knock off, just the full cut.

I pair Ferris Bueller (1986) with Better Off Dead (1985). They're completely different in tone and content, but both are highly unusual and equally funny. Better Off Dead is a bit more experimental, but has as many lines I'm still quoting 33 years later. "I want my two dollars!"

Sadly, the only way you're watching Better Off Dead legitimately is to rent it at a good brick 'n' mortar video store, or buy the disc. Youtube has a super low resolution version.

Hi.

If I am not mistaken Syd Field breaks down both screenplays to make his points in this book.

Unfortunately I don't access to my library anymore so I cannot be sure :)

If you liked that I have another suggestion - Thriller "a cruel picture". It's essentially the basis for Kill Bill.
