Ok, just got home and did a little searching.

I guess first of all, what are you rooting for? Do you just want to install the google apps so you have access to the Play marketplace or are you trying to install a new ROM? I know everyone has to start somewhere to learn, but maybe you should experiment with rooting a different device that is easier to recover from errors in case you run into problems. Kindles are not exactly easy to fix if you hit a snag.

Anyway, I have no experience with installing a different ROM on my Kindle. I've custom ROMed all my phones, but the HDX is a bit of a special case, so I didn't want to go in too deep yet. I rooted so I could have access to Google Play and replace Silk with Chrome. If that is all you are looking for, it's pretty easy to root and install HDXPosed and the Google Services, but using the HDX Toolkit to disable OTA updates is a little tricky.

Anyway, start with downloading ES File Explorer. You will need it installed to be able to install the Towelroot APK.

Go here for information about Towelroot, then go here for HDXPosed and links to the Google Services once you have sucessfully rooted with Towelroot.

Once you have HDXPosed installed and the Google Services running, you can use the HDX Toolkit to disable OTA updates so your Kindle won't automatically update and (best case) lose root or (worst case) brick itself. HDXPosed is supposed to disable OTA updates, but I've heard it doesn't work properly and I didn't want to take any chances.

You can always reverse the process (make sure Wifi is turned off and no cell service) and uninstall everything and re-enable OTA updates if you need to update for some reason later. I know the HDX Toolkit is supposed to be able to root your Kindle as well, but I found that using Towelroot is much easier.

If you are looking for information about installing custom ROMs, then go here for Safestrap and good luck!

Yes, the magnetic charger adapters are great.

Sure as an adult, we can be careful about connecting/disconnecting the cable, but kids not so much and that's to be expected.

And this is why the magnetic cable adapters are so great, they take like 99% of the wear&tear away from the flimsy micro-usb port.

These are the style that we invested in:

ComiXology is what i have on my kindle, you can buy some main stream comics off of it. Was reading Invincible for a long time on my iphone, and i love reading it on my kindle. Don't have to zoom in and read panel by panel anymore.

u/WatermelonBandido · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

I use this one for my HD 8. It works great and just looks like I'm carrying a notebook (the kind with pages). I need to get some sort of mouse.

In my opinion it's worth spending a few extra dollars to get the latest Fire. On Amazon you can get it from Amazon Warehouse for ~$28 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00TSUGXKE/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Edit: For a comparison look here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4524&idPhone2=7609& The newer one has a much better CPU, more RAM, an SD card slot, a camera, and if nothing else is still be supported and should be compatible with many more games.

If you're just really looking to play video files then installing something like MX Player or VLC should do fine. If you want to actually root the device, that gets more complicated.

I am as well, just too cheap/lazy to buy a case haha. Nah you shouldn't need an otterbox. I saw a moko leather type case that looks decent. [Here is that] (https://www.amazon.com/MoKo-All-New-Amazon-Generation-Release/dp/B0719KZW4L/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500166549&sr=8-1&keywords=moko+kindle+fire+hd+8) and there is also one that is a bit similar looking to the one from amazon [right here] (https://www.amazon.com/MoKo-All-New-Generation-Release-Lightweight/dp/B072BY299V/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500166549&sr=8-3&keywords=moko+kindle+fire+hd+8). Those are one of the ones I will probable get eventually.

I quickly realized after I bought mine that I needed some external storage. If space is the issue, about the only feasible option is the Kingston Wi-Drive. It has a 16- and a 32GB model. I just load movies onto it and play from the app. Yeah, it runs as its own WiFi network and you need the app for it to even work. Plus, it's FAT32 so there's a 4GB filesize limit. I haven't tried Google Play for movies because I have Netflix, which if you're a movie buff like me with a rooted CM7 KF you should probably try. And I always heard OTA Rootkeeper worked fine--I don't know what the deal is there.

u/angrydroid · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

First generation runs Netflix just fine thanks. So this link doesn't work?

u/bicyclemom · 4 pointsr/kindlefire

Same here.

I also got several of those cheap stylii from Amazon. Clips nicely onto the spine of my Targus case and keeps me from getting fingerprints all over the display.

u/ScottoGato · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

If you have a 2013 (soho), you WILL NEED a fastboot cable. A regular USB cable will not work.

You will also need to find a version of cyanogenmod that will not brick your fire. This coomunity is dedicated to soho modding.

Download MX Player or VLC. Once you have one of them on the device, grant your kid access to it. The thing that's a pain is that you have to do the transfer of the movies while logged into the child account over USB.

The other option is to download GoToApp and then grant your child access to that. It's less secure because it basically breaks the Freetime restriction. The child can access anything on the device using it. GL - This is my biggest complaint with the Freetime setup.

u/ThiasT · 3 pointsr/kindlefire

I have this case and really like it.

u/Sutcliffe · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

I have the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, so I can't speak to the size of the 7". That said I use ComiCat for my cbr files (and my Pathfinder PDFs too :)). It's a great interface for reading comics.

u/lord_dumbello · 1 pointr/kindlefire

The Kindle Fire is terrible at discovering and playing most videos (including MP4s). I'd suggest trying to play it using a file manger app like ES File Explorer or using installing the .APK for VLC to play it.

u/NomNomNominal · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

If you haven't rooted/installed Android Market, here is a reader from the Amazon Market that I have used successfully on the Fire: ComiCat. While I have rooted mine and installed the Android Market stuff, this app worked before I did all that.

u/ColinOnReddit · 0 pointsr/kindlefire

Its this now $30 7" one I found in her Amazon purchases. It also literally "features" Amazon underground

u/motioneso · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

This is the one I used. But it should be noted that this blocks the headphone jack. I think I'll be splicing a micro USB and extension cable together so it is straight.

u/gmr2048 · 4 pointsr/kindlefire

I have a 2012 Kindle Fire. The Comixology app is available in the Amazon market. I've used that to buy/download/read a number of comics on the Fire. I'm not a huge comics guy, so I don't know how up-to-date Comixology is (i.e., do they offer new releases weekly like comic stores do?) You can probably browse comixology.com and get a feel for what they offer when. Additionally, any comics you can buy via Amazon should work natively in the Fire. I have a few I've bought from there (again, older issues).

I also have a few comics in PDF format that I've transferred to the Fire. There's a $3 app called ComiCat that can read PDFs, as well as the other CBR, CBZ, etc. formats. So if you get your digital comics from somewhere else, you should be able to transfer them to the Fire and read them via this app.

Hope that helps some.

Edit: Just noticed you said "free comics and manga". If you get your free books from elsewhere and they're in standard formats (PDF, CBR, CBZ) then you should be able to download them to your computer, then transfer them to the Fire and read them with the app I mentioned above. If you're talking about finding pirated copies of books, I have no idea. Sorry.

If you look at the amazon website, posted here for convenience, the battery life of the 7" is optimistically rated at 7 hours, so I don't suppose 6 is unusual depending on what its doing. Its one of the reasons I upgraded to the HD 8, which has an estimate of 12 hours.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TSUGXKE/ref=nav_shopall_1_k_ods_tab_fd

P.S. I've typed this a lot, but I'll type it again. Be sure to reboot your device, maybe at the beginning of the day to check its battery life. Sometimes a badly written app will sit in the background consuming CPU cycles, and thereby your battery. A reboot will often end some of these services/apps. And, putting it to sleep is not rebooting it. Hold the power button down for a couple seconds, and acknowledge that you want to really shutdown, and then start it up again.

FYI: I just got an email announcing the new Kindle Fire HD 10" for October 11 release:

u/srini10000 · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

Here you go :). They're basically Amazon's equivalent to apple's earpods

u/troutb · 1 pointr/kindlefire

Plex Media Server is the answer.

Run plex server on your home computer.

Install the plex app on your Kindle.

. . .

Stream!

Also, I got one too. Couldn't pass up that deal!

u/icookthefood · 1 pointr/kindlefire

Go go go-one day sale, ends at midnight the 26th.

u/lvlegabyte · 4 pointsr/kindlefire

[Hashcode] (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591850&highlight=keyboard) has a nice one for the Kindle Fire. Jelly Bean that fixed the charging problem a lot of them had. You could also use [this] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01) to hook up a mouse and keyboard. It's the one I use.

u/Tropical_Fruity · 1 pointr/kindlefire

i use this https://www.amazon.ca/Generation-Lightweight-Magnetically-Detachable-Bluetooth/dp/B0711VXV3L/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=fire+hd+8+case+keyboard&qid=1571197865&sr=8-1 along with my fire hd 8. They keyboard is hella small, but i also have small hands. I used it during university writing notes for lectures in google docs, microsoft words, powerpoints, etc. I think the fire 7 might be just a tad too small though! i got it for the same reason u said, my laptop was too bulky to bring to school and carry around so i went for this cheap tablet with magnetic case/keyboard, it worked well! i used onedrive/ google drive to store my notes and access on laptop at home!

Are you sure you are looking at the correct information? I just looked up the "All New Fire HD 10 Kids Edition" and it lists it as being Octa-Core.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KD7K4B1?ref=ODS_v2_FS_TAB_FHD10KIDSOcta-Core: 2.0 GHz with 2GB of RAM32 GB of internal storage1920x1200 resolution at 224 ppi

Identical specs to the "All New Fire HD 10"https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K1RZWMC?ref=ODS_v2_FS_TAB_FHD10&th=1

Is it possible you were looking at the specs for the Fire HD8 Kids Edition (those are Quad-Core and have lower resolution)?

u/istrebitjel · 3 pointsr/kindlefire

For reference, the Kids Edition is the same hardware as the 8 GB HD 6" + the case/bumper.

No Fire has an SD slot. (Only the very first eInk Kindle had one ;)

I'm not aware of any other Kids models from Amazon to compare to. I'm kinda tempted to get one, but I have an old Kindle Fire that I will let the kids wreck first ...
