Suitable for any standard keyboard or laptop modelEliminate eyes fatigueMADE IN USA Produced from high quality, environmentally friendly materialPermits to use your keyboard, laptop in the dark ( using the light of monitor) .Very useful for people with poor vision.
Got one as well for $589 US off eBay with a 20% coupon. :) Previously I had gone thru two Dell XPS 15's (9570) and their light bleed / hot spotting were just atrocious so I returned them. Especially considering they were $1,200+ laptops. I also tried out the Matebook 14 from Walmart for ~$620. It was very nice but I didn't care for the glossy screen. Plus I really wanted to be in a 15.6 laptop. I'm McLovin my Matebook D 15.6. NO light-bleed/hot spotting around the edges. Extremely little flex. I installed a $40 240gb Inland SSD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076XXMJZH. What's nuts is the 1tb WD (WD10SPZX) that came with it can probably get ~$30 off eBay after fees/shipping. Kinda wanna get another 8gb chip to go dual channel but prices are pretty steep right now ($60+ used) so I'mma gonna wait on that, no real need for it either IMO but, because OCD.
I was able to get a -0.09v underclock and it knocked my gaming temps from yo-yo'ing from 65-70c to a solid 65c. Diablo 3 gets 55-60fps in 1080 with everything turned max except for aliasing and shadows set to medium. Idles ~40-43c while just browsing. Goes down to 38c when not doing anything. I'm OCD for fan noise as well. While just browsing simple sites or Youtube the fan doesn't come on at all! JOY!!! If I play something a bit more intense like Cookie Clicker the fans will ramp up a bit.
Yeah, I wish it had USB-C, and yeah, I wish it had back lit keys. But the bang for buck on this metal chassis matte IPS for ~$600 once I sell the 1tb is amazing IMO.
The X-slim cooling pad helps significantly. I read somewhere that it cools by 10 degrees. After heavy gaming - see the Tomb Raider example above - with the laptop on the cooling pad, the bottom near the fans (near where the exhaust fans are) is basically not hot at all. The X-slim does a fantastic job at cooling. Also the build quality is nice. I think that at $20 it's a pretty good deal, and even if the pad goes bad at that price it's not like you lost much.
The build quality of the laptop is nice. The lid of the laptop (below where the Gigabyte logo is) gives a bit of flex when you push down while the laptop is closed. Otherwise it feels very nice. I think that the surface around the trackpad and keyboard is made out of a nice metal. I can carry the laptop with one hand easily and not worry about it - the size and weight are really nice, so it should fit nicely in my backpack's laptop sleeve and not be a burden while traveling.
This should be a portable laptop, but you should consider a travel charger as well since this laptop doesn't hold a charge very well.
So I don't know much about heat throttling so I can't say much there.
Played a few hours of PayDay 2 and Left for Dead last night with mostly maxed settings (except for Anti-Aliasing-- turned that off as it made both games freak and crash). Both games ran pretty smoothly nor did I notice my laptop running warm. I do have it on top of one of this thingy here but wasn't plugged in. At one point, one of our PayDay games was pretty laggy but I was playing online, in a house, with 4 people playing LoL and 2 people playing Starcraft so I'm assuming it was just the interwebs and not the laptop itself as my PayDay buddy was lagging as well.
I just ran a Benchmark test using Unigen Valley with these settings and got these results:
When laptop was running on battery
When laptop was plugged in
Both instances, the GPU was running around 54-62c (at least, from what I remember)
On the Battery
I decided to go on battery power around 3:00 PM. It's now 4:30 and my battery is at 17%.
Round two on Battery
Okay, I'm gonna try changing Sager's settings to battery saving and we'll see how it goes.
No. Not for $1000. For an extra $100 you can get something with a GTX 1060.
Better selling price would be around $675 since the 770M is overall pretty close to a 960M. New 960M machine will cost you around $650-699 right now. Priced the machine a little higher than $650 for the build quality. They might get away with selling it for $699 if it is in seriously good condition and has an SSD.
One more point. If the GE62 from Newegg comes back in stock, that is a 970M machine for $850. Or you really wanted a good value, this is good too, bit for $100 more you can get a 1060 machine with an i7 and IPS display.
I'm looking to purchase this model in the near future - Asus N550JK-DS71T.
It has a touchscreen and I was planning on purchasing an SSD for it while keeping the 1TB where the optical drive would be. Though after doing some reading, it looks like there might be a successor to the N550/N551 soon with Nvidia GTX9xx series chips. I've been needing a laptop for a while but I just like to play the waiting game.
I came from r/suggestalaptop! Thanks a lot for your reply... My budget is around $500, so this seems like my best bet for gaming... This is the model I'm looking at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00K81O3PY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00K81O3PY&linkCode=as2&linkId=IDTXG3V457DXHCJ6&redirect=true&ref_=as_li_tl&tag=gameaholicorg-20
I was just suggested this laptop (or at least one very similar ).
I have a few questions that weren't readily answered on the Amazon description.
It is 6 (or 7 I can't remember) lbs so it is not super portable but it is manageable.
I haven't programmed with the laptop yet but the keyboard is iffy. While it looks fantastic, if you type fast enough the laptop will miss a keystroke which can be a an issue. I got an ASUS docking station so I will probably just plug in a keyboard and be good to go. (I am debating returning the docking station because if it is not perfectly lined up the laptop will wobble)
Found this thread while searching for reviews on this laptop. Decided on it because of the big memory and 1080 screen for the price. I will be programming on this a lot, so 1080 and a numpad is much appreciated.
Is this the same one? it appears listed for $735, as opposed to $640. Maybe I'm unlucky, but wanted to make sure http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i5547-7502sLV-15-Inch-Touchscreen/dp/B00IS84QRY/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Could you comment on the build quality? Is the keyboard panel hard plastic or rubbery?
I never thought of that. I found some fluorescent ones on Amazon that have mostly positive reviews. It's tricky because many of these keyboard stickers are cheaply made and it would suck to go through the effort of sticking them all only for them to start fading.
I've got a couple of ideas now, I'll just have to wait and see if my dad complains about it again. If I hear nothing then it must not be too big of a deal.
Thank you again for your help.
Good point. Just realized there's this one which is i5 or i7, but there's also this one which does have an m3.
Very nice. I got the i5-4200u/8g/256gb version for $1250. I worry about the aluminum parts getting scratched, and looked into getting a skin kit like the one for my UX31A, but didn't find anything readily available out there. All the companies require me to send mine in to make the template, and I didn't want to be without my machine. I ended up buying a decal kit, but have not yet installed it.

I bought it in Denmark on this site (Danish website). 10945 DKK is ~$2000 but computers are generally expensive in Denmark compared to the US.
This have some of the same specs.

This is the one I bought.
You know, it's been awhile since I did my upgrade, and I can't remember if I had to change any BIOS settings or not... I did perform a clean install of Windows however (made a USB boot drive with a Windows 8 ISO), and selected my SSD as the install drive; I didn't bother to try migrating Lenovo's install or anything.
For an SSD, I went with Intel - this one specifically: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EC50A0O
I chose that one because I had previously purchased & returned a Yoga 11s, which would not recognize a Crucial m500 SSD, and I found a reviewer that mentioned that they had the same problem with Crucial, but Intel worked. I've also since heard that Samsung's work, but I'd advise doing some research just to double check - just Google the SSD name and "Yoga 2 13", see if you find any forum postings or anything.
While you have it open, you might consider taking a stab at replacing the wifi card. A guy I was chatting with in another thread (here: http://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/2alfo3/yoga_2_pro_vs_surface_pro_3/ciwfr3h ) suggests that that card will work (unlike the one from Amazon I tried). I'm going to be ordering one later this month myself and giving it another shot.
