I wish that point were lost on me. When my modem doesn't need upgrading because I'm not paying for "Ultimate" (from TWC) speeds of 60 Mbps down... and my modem has been out on the market for over 14 years. Seriously. Look at the top review on Amazon. It's from 2002. They advertise getting rid of 56k in the product description! My almost old enough to drive a car modem supports 42 Mbps down! 10 up! I wouldn't need a new modem if I only cared about up speed for TWC's new "Ultimate 100" service. Not that I really ever use that much up bandwidth, but still.

We are finally getting speeds where I'll need to buy a new modem and I'm not going to feel like I'm getting ripped off by paying $60+ a month for something that should be far cheaper (and more reliable - though YMMV by location and ISP). Our internet in this country sucks in comparison in cost and speed to many other "tech" countries - and it is totally the fault of the ISPs. Just a couple of years ago, I was paying $40 a month for 6 Mbps down, and I had no choice. Now, at least I'm paying $40 a month for 15 down (better speeds than 80% of the country as of 2015 - see source above). Soon, if TWC actually rolls this out, it will be $40 a month for 50 down - which is great. And if we rolled out a municipal ISP to give the middle finger to giant companies like TWC that have held us at these slow speeds - I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I've known for years our internet hasn't been great. I'm just happy it's finally getting better.

Hey Lexington redditors! With the help of a friend/photographer, I created a book highlighting local coffee shops around town. While this is clearly a shameless plug for the book, I’m also here to answer any questions you have about local coffee, making/selling a book, or even CASA (the nonprofit I am donating a portion of the proceeds to).

The book will be available in local coffee shops this week, and is on Amazon now (though it's cheaper to buy in stores and I'd honestly prefer people buy it locally).

Edit: Thank you all for the support! If you’re interested in purchasing a copy, it’s currently available at Third Street Stuff & Coffee. It’ll be at Lussi Brown, Broomwagon, and Coffee Times by this weekend, with more places to follow. Thanks again!

That's why I added "biologist" in the title. Physicist Sean Carroll very cool, Biologist Sean Carroll also very cool! His book, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, is amazing.

Next time we'll try to invite Physicist Sean Carroll! He might come!

Anyone with Security torx bits can easily remove the lock/gps from the back wheel, and turn an un-ridable trash bike, into a free bike for a person in need of transportation.

I'd encourage everyone to get a set and start freeing as many bikes as you can find before the city sanitation services takes them all to the dump. I really doubt Spin is going to come pick them up.

There's a good book about him that details his early life in Kentucky. By all accounts, he was an exceedingly good person.

This area was pretty exclusively Shawnee, but all natives were driven out in the 1800s and the Shawnee have since congregated in other parts. Decent book on the subject if you're interested.

The book Weird Kentucky is a good source for some of the more odd things around our state. There's an annoying sort of condescending air about the author when writing about a lot of the stuff which aggravated me, but it still has some pretty cool stuff in it with plenty of representation for Lexington.

Buy your own modem and router. Seriously. When I moved to Lexington 2 summers ago, I lasted less than a month with the piece of electric dogshit modem they gave me before I broke down and bought my own, and it's a night and day difference. Before, I typically had to reset my modem no less than 4-6 times an evening if I was watching Netflix. Online gaming was out of the question. Typically got half of the speed I was paying for, less if it was during the evening.

After, all of that is gone. No lag spikes to speak of, no downtime. I get the full 50Mb down I pay for - I've occasionally seen it go a bit higher (55-60), but usually during off hours. I have zero complaints, and the new modem is really my only guess as to why it feels like my TWC and others are two completely different things.

For the modem, I recommend the Motorola SB6121 or Motorola SB6141. I personally own the second one, but both have fantastic reviews on Amazon.

For router, I recommend the Asus RT-N66U. Asus has a couple other cheaper options, but I can only personally vouch for this one.

If your internet is shit right now with TWC, give these a try and I'm willing to bet you'll be singing a different tune.

My girlfriend got groped while out walking the dog. I bought her this which seems to work well when I test sprayed it:

Have you checked your cable modem to see if it's close to maxing out on the upstream power? Mine used to (but only at night for some reason) so I got an amplifier for the house and haven't had an issue since.

You could buy one of these. I have 5 outdoor cats with two of these homes for them. Keeps them really warm in the coldest of nights. I feed them on the porch every morning at 8am and around 4-5 pm. They don't bother any birds or kill any wildlife.
