My native fantasy world litRPG recommendations:

Dante's Immortality has a strong zero to hero theme for a native to his fantasy world. The MC is worse off than a beggar at the start. Has some magic academy parts. Well written. Some of book 2 is on Royal Road but the author has been re-writing book two for a long time so it may or may not ever be completed.

Threadbare is a quirky litRPG story about a stuffed bear and his attachment to his girl and the friends he makes along the way. This story is full of puns, some clever and some more on the nose but I had a good chuckle several times and had a lot of fun reading this series. As lighthearted as this story appears at first, it does have some grimdark elements and tells a good story. The series actually has a conclusion which is rare enough in this genre so it gets major points for that.

The City and the Dungeon has one of the more interesting magic systems I have seen in litRPG. The characters are all native to the fantasy world. This series is a bit different in that it is written in the form of the MC retelling past events to his sister kind of like how Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles are written as a flashback. The story itself features old school dungeon diving party mechanics which I happen to really like. The fairly original magic system and strength ranking system are very interesting. I did find myself wishing that the author would give more details on stats, character builds, etc., but the plot skips events and advances too quickly. At the same time it over-explains superfluous details like various branches of dungeon religion theory and courtroom law procedures. That was my main complaint, but overall I enjoyed the story. Not sure on status of book 2.

Arcane Ascension This one is strongly represented on the r/ProgressionFantasy subreddit but has some light litRPG elements too. No user interface and on the soft end not having many stats. The world is a native fantasy world with tall RPG like puzzle towers that people try to climb. These books feel more polished and professionally written than most books in the litRPG genre. It is a hybrid story that bounces back and forth between school life (magic academy) and dungeon (tower) diving. I really loved the focus on the Tower exploration and the puzzle solving that was required. The magic academy part of the book is cool as well but I think for specifically litRPG readers it won't be the main appeal.

The magic system is pretty deep, with over 50 different "classes" of magic ability called attunements. For example, Guardian attunements are melee fighters who can strengthen themselves, while Elementalists wield Fire, Air, and Lightning. It is also possible to gain more than one class as well and we see glimpses of characters that are god-like in power while the MC, a first year student, is incredibly weak in comparison. The MC makes the most of his attunement though and crafts clever items to help cover his weaknesses and relies on his friends to fill the other gaps. Crafting magic items is a major focus for the MC which I found entertaining and satisfying.

The Crafter by Outspan Foster. I haven't read this one yet, but I'm pretty pumped. Ordered the paperback. Set in a non-vr world.

Dante's Immortality. Highly recommended on this sub. Book 2 probably won't happen. Probably once a week asks about book 2. Still, so good that it's worth reading book 1 of an unfinished series. I think that's pretty high praise for it.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic. Another sub favorite. People argue whether or not it's LitRPG, most important thing is: it's dope.

Adventures on Brad. Nice slice of life in a non-vr fantasy world with game mechanics. Fun stuff.

A few others:

Adventurer Academy andIs It Wrong to Try and Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon.

Enjoy!

I've been reading a lot this past week, after some time mostly doing other things...

Lair for Rent by Skyler Grant. Not bad, read if you want more in the Laboratory/Emma-verse.

Mastermind by Steve Kelliher. Great first litterpug, made me add his fantasy series to my backlog of books to read.

Hell's Ascendant by Benjamin Medrano. Great finish to another trilogy. Not litterpug, though Sting and Song qualifies. I recommend reading all of his books.

Orc Pirate by Simon Archer. Not litterpug, read it because I enjoyed Forger of Worlds. Enjoyable, though it is a harem power fantasy.

Tree Guardian by Andrew Karevik. Pretty good, second dungeon core novel following a seed of Yggdrasil.

Skyflare by Aaron Oster. Finally got around to this, it's alright, third book in the Supermage series.

Buryoku by Aaron Oster. Enjoyable cultivation novel, first in a new series. We'll see how it goes.

Manifest by Cody Whitfill. Very enjoyable, some interesting differences from similar novels. Looking forward to the next book.

Last but not least, I'm currently reading Gamer for Love by Daniel Schinhofen. A couple of the Alpha World books were not that enjoyable for me, but it seems like he's back on track and finishing off the series well with this one. I'm glad to see another series end.

I write comedy LitRPG that might be along the lines of what you're looking for. Definitely lighthearted, reviewers have compared it to the likes of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Monty Python.

Note there is an element of 'trapped' but only because the real world becomes the game, and the characters take it in their stride.

Here's a link for Level Up - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JFM67F

Another book I can recommend that ticks a lot of your boxes is Orcanomics (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O2NDJ2M) It isn't strictly speaking LitRPG, but there are enough gaming terms that I'd be comfortable classifying it as gameLit. It's brilliant, extremely funny, with great characters and a very satirical take on the fantasy genre.

u/AimlessZealot · 2 pointsr/litrpg

Yes, I generally am okay with that. We often imagine characters as idealized, so when a pretty girl shows up with a female MC it's more than likely the idealized version of her. In my opinion, a cover is an expression of the author (or publisher's, in the more traditional model) idea of the book's central character, goal, theme, or selling point. If your MC is a male and the only character on the cover is female, it's clearly not your central character, it is unlikely to be the book's "theme," and if it's your book's goal or selling point, odds are very good I'm in for some kind of romance/harem or damsel-in-distress story (which I can take or leave, personally).

As for harem/hero worship vs female MC? Yeah. It's in stuff like how the female character is posed. Is it an action shot? Are they positioned to "show off the assets" or beckoning the reader? Does her appearance serve to suggest she's capable, or is she wearing impractical but figure-flattering clothing?

Here are some examples of the difference:

(Female MCs)

Mitigating Risk by Blaise Corvin, Book 1

Temple of Sorrow by Carrie Summers

VERSUS

(Romance/Harem/Wish Fulfillment)

Delvers LLC by Blaise Corvin

Dungeon Deposed by William D Arand

NOTE: There's nothing wrong with the latter category, just not my thing.

In the first two, we are given moments that are clearly about defining the character, often in the middle of some activity or action, and more effort is spent framing the moment than selling the womanhood of the subject. In the latter two, it's clearly a beauty shot in each one. You couldn't tell me what activity they are in the middle of, or where in the story this might happen. The pictures basically exist only to convince me that there is a woman in this story and she is pretty.

How's that work for ya?

If you like Savage Divinity and don't like MMO-ish rulesets, you might considering checking out Xianxia. I'd consider it kind of a LitRPG-adjacent genre, I guess? Clear stages of power progression without any sort of Game Mechanics or blue boxes at all. There a quite a few web novels translated from Chinese you might like, but the starting point I recommend is Coiling Dragon (on the web here or on KU here), and if you like it you have a TON of web-based reading material ahead of you my friend. If you want an English-native take on the genre /u/Will_Wight is doing a great job with his Cradle series.

u/sapidus3 · 16 pointsr/litrpg

I enjoyed theArcheologist warlord by E.M. Hardy (technically I suppose you would say it is sci-fi, but it feels more like fantasy). The main character gets transformed into a sentient space pyramid thing. At first I thought it would be more of a dungeon building thing, but he ends up sending workers out to gather resources, build pylons to extend his range, construct different units, ect.

It's not litRPG but the Bobiverse books by Dennis Taylor are fantastic and definitely get some of the 4x, spanning across the galaxy vibe as the bobs spread throughout space.

Are you interested in settlement/city building?

u/AnonTBK · 2 pointsr/litrpg

A lot of the community relies on crowd-editing via systems like Google Docs and beta readers. A quality editor can get extremely expensive depending on how involved you want them to be and how much they need to do.

As a whole, LitRPG tends to be faster-paced than traditional Sci-fi or fantasy. LitRPG mechanics shouldn't get in the way of the plot or character progression. They should be woven into the storyline in a way that feels natural. If you think that a section is dragging, or being dragged down, because of the mechanics, you probably need to rethink the way they are being introduced or used.

That said, you need to stay consistent and have a clear idea of how you want them to be used. I was the silent contributor and editor for Charles Dean's The Bathrobe Knight, Merchant of Tiqpa, and War Aeternus series. The former two series were light on the mechanics but heavy on the skill usage and interactions with the world, environment, and the game system. The latter was extra 'crunchy' and stats and skills played a much more prominent role in the way the story was written and unfolded. I just released my own book Death Flag and, while it was written to be a LitRPG, I sadly had to scrap the entire system that was developed because it got in the way of the story and revealed too much.

If you have trouble finding someone, let me know. Depending on the length of the work and where you are in the creation process, I might be able to help out and get things pointed in the right direction. Even in the case I can't, I might be able to point you toward a decent copy editor who may be willing to pick up the job.

Lastly, consider making it available somewhere like Royal Road. If you can get feedback, its honest and brutal and effective.

Cheers and goodluck.

My bad, didn't notice the audiobook part, just the exciting combat part.

Patch 17; locked in game story (or maybe portal into game-world?), lots of great combat and multiple audiobooks. Character gets glitch-stuck in a locked expansion surrounded by demon NPCs, right as everyone who plays the game gets uploaded into it (there are some unexplained non-scientific stuff about that, that make me wonder if it's actually an upload and not really a portal story).

Adventures on Brad; dungeon crawling fantasy story containing no earthlings. Easier/lower level story, a trilogy, but the fights are decent for what I consider a YA level book.

The System Apocalypse; real life apocalypse story. Fighting is good, as is the writing, and there are 4 (5?) audiobooks already (and a few more books already published that haven't gotten an audio treatment).

Codename: Freedom; VRMMORPG, with zero magic to start but lots of fighting. Decent for a VR book, I'm not usually a fan of those but I've listened to the first two books and am looking forward to the third.

Arcane Survivalist; apocalypse caused by a portal-story (scientist semi-accidentally sends the system back though his portal into the real world). Action is great, though writing could have been better. Same writer wrote another story I've read, but I can't remember how much action there is in it.

Forever Fantasy Online; VRMMORPG turned portal-story. I'll admit the whole thing wasn't amazing, but you're just looking for action and I liked the action.

You're Not Allowed to Die; end of life single-player VR sim turned portal-story (the MC doesn't know that, though). This one is hard, as I liked it but the character starts with some insane OP equipment. Still, this and the sequel were both enjoyable.

The Land; I'm not even linking this one, people here have a hate-hardon for it. Still, as long as you look past the bro-ish behavior and tone, great books with lots of action.

u/DaniScribe · 7 pointsr/litrpg

I'm not well-read in the genre so I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Will Wight's Cradle series sounds as though it might interest you. The series isn't complete, but there are five completed novels in it.

Amazon link for the first book, Unsouled

Amazon link for the first three as a package deal.

I would recommend it if you're a fan of cultivation, spiritual techniques, and the zero to god journey. It also has a more western style prose that for me was more enjoyable to read.

u/EyedekayMan · 4 pointsr/litrpg

Well I don't listen to litrpg audiobooks much, however I can recommend a few. Orconomics is great. Currently I'm listening to Into the abyss and it's pretty good as well.

u/IICVX · 8 pointsr/litrpg

The first ebook of Dante's Immortality was recently published, and should fit your criteria. Dante basically distrusts everyone all the time, but because he genuinely doesn't know a lot he ends up committing some believably naive mistakes.

You might also like Threadbare - the main character isn't naive so much as innocent, given that he's a newborn golem for most of the novel. The combat system is all about skills and skill synergies, and the dialog is great (even though the main character can't speak).

There's also Everybody Loves Large Chests. Again the main character starts out a little naive, but that's largely because it starts from more or less zero Int. It doesn't become an asshole so much as a completely amoral monster, because that's what it is.

If you're willing to read serials that aren't published as complete books, you can try out the bifecta of combat LitRPGs on Royal Road: The New World and The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound are both great.

u/Yangoose · 22 pointsr/litrpg

While not a LitRPG I feel like the Bobiverse scratches the same itch very well.

It's about a guy who's consciousness is put into a robot and shot off into space. He has 3D printers that can create anything he can think of, including copies of himself. While not living "in a game" he still creates his own VR world that he shares with his copies and can control his perception of time by speeding up/slowing down his processor.

He explores, invents, creates and discovers tons of amazing stuff.

u/Hoophy97 · -1 pointsr/litrpg

Post Human is my #1 favorite story on RR. It’s complete too!

It feels like a hybrid between the Bobiverse series with its main character self replication and r/HFY’s Chrysalis with the way its AI main character manages things. I reccomend both of those as well.

Bobiverse (paid): https://www.amazon.com/Are-Legion-Bob-Bobiverse-Book-ebook/dp/B01LWAESYQ/ref=nodl_

I started reading the Codename: Freedom series last night. Only about 10 chapters in so far, but it seems pretty good so far. It did come out in 2017 though, so you may have already read it. The third book only just came out in August though.

u/glompage · 1 pointr/litrpg

Expedition: Summerlands and Superpowereds both have the kind of character you're looking for and both play big roles but aren't MCs. There's a "kind of rogue" MC in the amusing Master of None. Rogue-ish?

Technically The Dead Rogue does have a slightly rotting Rogue MC but I didn't really feel it was especially rogue if that makes any sense.

And if you want to just give up on the whole rogue thing and go for someone without any subtlety who just bashes everything and everyone on the head, I had a lot of fun reading the latest "The Good Guys"/Home Siege Home last night.

Yes indeed! Mark 2.0 is an extension/spin-off/sequel to the completed Enthralled series.

I have yet to hear from anyone who just jumped right in and started with "Truth" before reading any of the 420,000 word tale that is Enthralled, so I don't know how well Mark 2.0 works on its own. I would start with "The Crystal Heart" -> "Picking Up the Pieces" -> "The Eros Expansion" -> "System Ascension" before starting on this one.

Forever Fantasy Online by Rachael Aaron
While it technically starts in an MMO, it almost immediately ends up in a real fantasy world.
The series is excellent and book 3 (the final book) just came out. The author is traditionally published and writes really well.

  1. Cradle series by Will Wight
  2. Limitless Lands series by Dean Henegar
  3. Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko
  4. Dungeon Lord by Hugho Heusca
  5. Crystal Shards Online (Dodge Tank)
  6. System Apocalypse by Tao Wong
  7. Completionist Chronicles by Dakota Krout *so far so good but high chance of series collapse based on past experience with his other series Divine Dungeon
  8. Chaos Seeds (The Land) series by a guy who is a total dick to others *only recommended as audiobook due to author's poor writing being compensated by Nick Podehl's narration. High chance this series will collapse because the author constantly generates new plot lines that he never resolves.

Cradle currently has a promo until end of Thursday. The first 3 books are free as a box set which is gonna save you some money if you dont have kindle unlimited. I cant stress enough how ridiculously good this series is. I’ve reread it many times. Book 7 is coming out in October

It's by Pegaz A and the book can be found here. This is the description provided by amazon.

" For John, death was merely the beginning. Transmigrating into a new world granted him an opportunity to change his view on life.

With power and immortality as new goals, he is willing to pay any price. Unfortunately, there are those willing to take advantage of him and his unfamiliarity with a new world. Shadows behind the curtains, unwilling to reveal themselves, will trick him into doing their bidding.

Now, John faces an entire kingdom on his own. Deceived? Conned? They don't care. His actions carry a sin none of them are willing to forgive.

With the world as an enemy, John will fight to accomplish his goals. His path will be stopped by no one.

Read this novel to enjoy a journey of self-discovery, ambition and revenge. Inspired by classical LitRPG, Xianxia and Fantasy, Idle System is a new take on these genres. If you've enjoyed novels like Ready Player One, Main Character Hides his Strength or Dodge Tank, then you're bound to love this book "

Obviously the obligatory nod to Ready Player One is an instant turn-off for me, a book I would consider one of my least favorites. Again, the description is quite vague and cookie-cutter.
