As for whether or not Christian is any more real in the finale than in the first episodes, we receive a straightforward explanation as to why he appears in the island timeline, and a straightforward explanation as to why he appears in the finale. Seems difficult to debate.

I think a lot of the resistance to your theory is coming from the fact, as the creators insisted throughout the run of the series, Lost was a character-based show. The mythology of the island and the genre elements were a lot of fun, but the characters were meant to be the main event.

If the entirety of the series is taking place in Jack's head, it negates the importance of the very large cast; including the favorite characters of many (if not most) of the viewers. Further, a major thematic concern of the series is the dichotomy of "us vs. them," and the manner in which this breaks down given familiarity with those around us -- naturally, this theme cannot exist if all is within Jack's mind. Finally, the series presentation of the afterlife in season 6 is entirely based on the idea that what is most important in life is those around us ("nobody does it alone"), and that we should embrace others, no matter what that circumstances are that bring us together.

You mentioned an interest in the literary traditions Lost mentions; you might be interested in Edward Said's literary criticism, in particular his work on "Orientalism". This concerns the creation of an "Other," the implications of which should be clear with regard to its relation to the series, and a vital thematic element which must be negated if all is within Jack's head.

Sidebar: thanks for taking the time to continue the discussion here. Even though I disagree with your theory, the discourse surrounding the show always has been (and continues to be) the best thing about the series, and a large part of what makes it so worthwhile.

It's the book "S." , which was conceived by JJ Abrams and written by Doug Dorst. Haven't gotten to open it yet, but it looks like a library book titled "Book of Thesus" , and it's 2 stories involving the actual book and someone who I think buys/rents the book. It is a mystery that you solve as you go, it is supposed to have clues and such in it. People who've read it say it's super fun, as long as you go into believing the book is real. I may be making this up, but I think there may be other things in the book that tie in to Lost, like the numbers, but again, I haven't read it. Can't wait to get home and give it a whirl. Here's the Amazon link.

Nikki Stafford's 'Finding Lost' series is excellent.

Every season has its own book (1 and 2 share a book) but it has very detailed write ups of each episode, along with popular theories at the time, etc.

Great stuff.

Look at her amazon reviews! The first book is for season 1 & 2, The remaining seasons each gets its own book.

More about Nikki https://www.blogger.com/profile/04463618183850438914

She has a great (old) blog with about 300 LOST posts. Many were done just after the episode originally aired.

http://nikkistafford.blogspot.com/search/label/Lost

She also hosted a S1-5 weekly rewatch blog done in 2009-2010 http://lost-rewatch.blogspot.com/2009/05/lost-rewatch-schedule.html

The first episode rewatch blog as an example: http://lost-rewatch.blogspot.com/search/label/1.01%20Pilot%20Part%201

Nikki has been my best source of objective info about the series and other TV as well. Hope this helps you.

A good springboard for each episode is the Finding Lost books. She goes into detail for all the literacy references on the show, actor and writer bios, what the hype was like each season and even stuff like how the Writers Strike impacted Season 4. It's really in-depth and she goe episode by episode so no fear of spoilers. Seasons 1 & 2 share the first book so you can just start there. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1550227432/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1550228781&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1Q2XEJ83MBNGW47255JJ

Does he have the LOST Encyclopedia yet? Or any of the soundtracks? You can also get t-shirts pretty cheap on amazon.

I am happy all the episodes are on Netflix. However, I saw this deal today that is not too bad on Amazon. Seasons 1-5 for $109.

You might be interested in the book Ultimate Lost and Philosophy. This came out after the show ended, so don't mistake it for the one that came out in 2007. I haven't read either book, but I read Mad Men and Philsophy and plan to get this one. It might be up your alley; looks like you can read the first chapter for free.

I don't mean to piggy back on your post but I was considering getting the discs as well, mainly for the extra content but also just to have physical copies.

I did a bit of reading on the 'all-in-one' box set (with the extra trinkets and such) and people said that the packaging and condition of the discs is questionable. A lot of people said the packaging sucks. It's about $180ish on Amazon for the blu-ray version. But if you buy each season individually it's closer to $200+; however, people said each season is then properly packaged and I believe you still get all the bonus footage but no 'trinkets'; which I really don't care about.

Basically wondering if anyone has purchased this and got it in good condition: http://www.amazon.com/Lost-The-Complete-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B0036EH3WK/ref=tmm_blu_title_0

A few years ago I read a fun and fascinating book, Nicholas Meyer's The View from the Bridge: Memories of Star Trek and a Life in Hollywood. Meyer directed Wrath of Khan, and something which caught my eye was a chapter about having to do reshoots of some scenes because some producer or other didn't like the original footage.

Meyer talks about what a nightmare it was to reshoot, and how noticeable the reshoots were in the final cut. Part of the problem was that in movies, sets and props rapidly get decommissioned, boxed up, moved around, repurposed etc. And that's in an ongoing film under production, much less a TV show that ended almost a decade ago.

Then there's the "Enterprise effect," where Star Trek Enterprise was set in the past from TOS, but ended up looking more... futuristic. It's just part of prequel production hell.

While I agree that it can be done, this is the thing. I wonder how many potential viewers are interested in the Dharma Initiative as a historical artifact - a research program which took place in a particular time, place and context - and are instead interested in the minutiae of stations, retro jumpsuits, and pseudo-science.

Many of the details will vary, and that niche of the audience probably won't be happy.

I don't know if it's available in the US or if it's in your price range (I'm from the UK) but this is what I have and it's top notch

Thank you for the response. I did see warnings on one of them about being a Chinese knock-off, but this is the one I was going to get - the Region 2 set from amazon.co.uk. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Complete-Season-1-6-Blu-ray/dp/B003OBZ6HE/ref=tmm_blu_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1537375034&sr=8-1

Do you think this is the official one? It's only 50.00 GBP!

I found used ones on amazon for $99 - $240 (and three of them are under $105) and new ones start at $245. Sorry to burst your bubble but you might be shooting for the stars a little on this one.

Amazon is only showing sets from private sellers. Price isn't too bad compared to what it was when it came out.

Lostpedia is great, contains more information than you could possibly hope to ever catch just watching the show on your own, including all of the info from the now-defunct ARGs. Make sure you check out the Missing Pieces shorts as well.

Via Domus is pretty lousy, both as a game, and as a way for getting your LOST fix, in my opinion. Still, if you absolutely have to absorb every little bit of information about the LOST universe, it's probably worth checking out, if just for a way to explore a couple of locations not revealed in the show.

There's also the LOST Encyclopedia if you're looking for a book about the show.

I'd suggest that you check out Fringe, another show by JJ Abrams. Not as good as LOST, but it still has plenty of mystery, suspense, character development, and emotion to it. It also has the same composer as LOST (Michael Giacchino) and you'll recognize one of the major characters as the guy who played Matthew Abaddon (Lance Reddick).

If you got this collection, rotate the lid and you'll find a secret disc.

I owned this collection since it was released and just realized it was there a few months ago SMH.

I've reread your posts and other posts, and I think we're talking about two different things. My error. I was talking about Lostpedia, I think you mean the physical book Lost Encyclopedia. Sorry for the confusion
