Tucking the wrists into the gloves isn't a guarantee. Just a few days ago I found that out the hard way. I was propping myself up in a weird position working on an overhead groove and molten metal spilled out and dripped into the top of my glove, burned me pretty good. But on the plus side, it burned me in the shape of the Little Dipper constellation, so that'll look pretty rad if it scars up, haha. I've only been welding since last summer, but I've learned quickly that if you're stick welding, the sparks will find you. Better safe than sorry! THIS is the jacket I've been using. Not as stylish as yours, but it does a good job and the price was right.

That's a bummer they won't ship over there, though. I never really thought about the consumables being different over there though, so I guess that makes sense.

And yeah, the briefcase welders are pricey. I've heard of people picking them up used at a reasonable price, but definitely out of my price range as well.

175lb magnet and 1200lb tensile strength rope from Paracord planet on Amazon was what I was recommended.

Looked back and order was cheaper those two and gloves for about the cost of your magnet. Can always move up. What I was recommended below.

Rivers are still too high for kayaking safely so can't really speak on it but was not overkilling it and am totally not a strong enough person to pull out an ATM or safe. Figure I can get more later but if I do something stupid it's better to have a cheaper smaller magnet and I can just use my phone to get GPS coordinates to the bigger item that forces my hand on a pricier one.

May have better advice from others.

I recommend the neodymium magnets from CMS. They're the cheapest I've been able to find: http://www.magnet4sale.com/search.php?search_query=fishing

For the rope, I recommend a braided nylon, but you can use most types. I've been using the 3/8 which is pretty good, but I'm probably going to try some 1/4 to see how I like it: https://www.amazon.com/SGT-KNOTS-Utility-Rope-Made/dp/B00XRMF0YY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1486080250&sr=8-2&keywords=braided+nylon+rope

Very cool, you might consider a drop-in LED as a substantial improvement

Hard drive magnets are very small in comparison to magnets usually used for fishing, both in size and power. They're the right composition, but they're just quite a bit smaller, which is going to lessen your chances of bringing anything up. Smaller magnets are very cheap; below I'll link a small magnet and some cheap rope that'll do the job; gear like that is an entry into the hobby that'll run you only about $20 USD.

I mean, you can get this 6700lb (3000kg) lathe shipped free on Prime:

Though, to be reasonable, the shipping cost is probably built in to the price, considering it's the price of a new car.

I use 2 neodymium magnets @ 100 lb. pull each. They are stackable, meaning they combine strength when used together. Having said that, it pays off to get a few of those than to have all different sized magnets to suit any situation where the force to pull changes (i.e. if you are with someone on a pier v. alone on a fishing boat). This one is reliable. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C6PB7C6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use this. It is not the sweet setup many have here but it will get you started. I also tie the rope directly to the magnet instead of using a carabiner as there is only a single point of failure that way. You can watch Youtube videos to get an idea of what to do but I highly recommend just going and giving it a try.

I like this one:
I'm not sure if they ship to the UK, but I didn't see any shipping restrictions.

Heavy-Duty Retrieving and Holding Magnet, 5" Length, 2" Width, 1" Height with Eyebolt, Nut, and Magnetic Shields, 150 Pounds Pull, 1 each https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CP2PG0/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_Shh8wbCAMQ5KG

This is the one I use. You have to remember though, you're not getting a full contact (all 150lbs of pull) on anything you grab, unless you get full flat contact. That being said, I've never had problems removing items from this magnet

I can't tell is the eye loop is pointing up, but if it is you might find a friend with a winch. If you can hook a cable to the eye you should be able to winch that sucker right off of there.

Even a hand winch might do the trick.

Yeah, I'll let you know if I find anything better. I hate having to deal with cord bunching up everywhere.

Also, I have no clue why they seem so weak. Especially since the other magnet I have is only a 265 lb one but it handles much better. Maybe just bad batch?
