I would check if his school provides a stethoscope. Mine did. A lot of my friends got secondary stethoscope but it just sits in their closet.
As stupid as this sounds - it's the little things that are appreciated
If you wanna do a basket of small things

  • find out what kind of pens they use and get a pack. (Make sure you know what weight they use.
  • Also if they uses highlighters get those for them
  • ear plugs - even if they don't think they'll use it. They will.
These are the ones I use. Macks Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs Value Pack, 6-Count (Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004CKCX9K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_heqpybQCQH9Q6

-Essential anatomy is a computer program you can buy on the Mac. Or iPhone or windows computer. I used it religiously through anatomy.

I really liked Essentials of Family Medicine. I don't do well with review books because I don't have enough context, and I felt like the book did a very thorough job of explaining primary care and how to deal with the problems most people present to clinic with. I also liked that it gave a DDx for various complaints based on frequency seen in outpatient settings. It also has good flowcharts for workups. Even though I don't plan on doing Primary Care, I'll probably keep this book around.

There’s no need to spend a lot on a stethoscope for 3rd year rotations. The one above is perfectly good and you could even get by with something like this:

3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope, Ceil Blue Tube, 28 inch, 2454 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F4OYNA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hXLgDbB7NG4VC

If you’re anything like me you’ll loose 2-3 of them before the end of med school.

Go with these. It's what I've been using. They custom mold so they are some of the most comfortable ear plugs I've had. They block noise extremely well. You can easily wear them for hours on end and not have any pain in your ears

I love these headphones. I wear them for hours and never hurt my ears or get uncomfortable. But make sure you are looking at the over the ear version, not the on ear.

I fell in love with these pens during my first two years of medical school.

How to dissect in general? Or do a human dissection? Honestly, we just used this textbook for our gross anatomy lab. I'm not sure you need much more than that...

Perhaps give this a try? Keep a small keychain sized bottle full of this stuff in your pocket and never share it!!
