I use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro 250ohms coupled with Schiit Magni and Modi for my headphone amp and digital/analog converter combo. The magni/modi combo is great for flat sound i.e doesn't add any extra sound qualities in the conversion or amplification (pro for some, con for others) and they power the 250ohm version of the DT-990 pros wonderfully. The DT-990 pros themselves are great metal headphones in my opinion. First off, they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on, I've worn them 8 hours a day for the past 2 months and sometimes forget they're even on. The soft velour earpads are fucking superb. Sound quality wise they're amazing as well. Massive soundstage, when I got them one of the first songs I played was Inside the Particle Storm- Dark Tranquillity and I was motherfucking blown away, and it doesn't hurt that they're good for FPS gaming as well. Amazing, punchy bass, but not overdone at all like you find in some DJ headphones. Good mids and nice highs. Some people find the treble on the dt-990s to be fatiguing but I've yet to come across that and even if I did I could get rid of the problem through the equalizer.

Alessandro Music Series One

The MS1 is a slightly tweaked pair of Grado SR80i's, which are widely considered to be some of the best headphones for metal among the audiophile community because of their ballsy and in-your-face aesthetic. The Alessandro phones are subtly improved and are a little more well-rounded.

Also, since they're $100, you can spend that extra $100 you saved on sweet merch!

Been listening to this album all day thanks to someone posting this in /r/metal. It's totally blowing my mind right now. So often, melodic death metal goes wrong - in my opinion - by emphasising keyboards, orchestras etc. and forgetting its roots in being guitar-driven music. But this album, "The Eclipse", manages to have so many incredible riffs and guitar solos which carry the melodies and push the song onwards, while also having additional symphonic elements which don't detract from it at all, but actually enhance it. That's a super difficult balance to strike, and I love it.

You can download the album from the iTunes Store/Amazon Digital/Google Play, or order the CD via CDJapan.co.jp. It doesn't look like they have physical distribution of the CD outside of Japan, so the download is probably the best way of getting hold of it.

I've been using a pair of Argon 7460A active speakers for quite a while (about $400). But just 2 days ago I figured I wanted better quality audio so I went out and bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 and my god do they sound amazing.

I'm not an audiophile so $300 was an insane amount of money for me to spend on headphones, but these headphones are probably the greatest purchase I've ever made haha

I own a pair of Sony MDR-7506's and they handle every style of music I've used them for extremely well (with the exception of EDM, they are not bass heavy enough to really do that style any justice). They are studio monitors so they are very flat (no extra emphasis on the lows or highs) and their clarity and presence is unbeatable for the price. They will blow anything by Skullcandy or Beats completely out of the water and they are supposed to last for decades, I've had mine for about 3 years and they function as well as the day I bought them. There's also an /r/headphones and /r/audiophile subreddit, they will definitely point you in the right direction.

The only complaint I had about these headphones was that the ear pads started to wear out after about a year so I replaced them with these slightly softer and nicer earpads and they look as new as the day I put them on. They have a little more cushion which creates a little more deadspace between your ear and the speaker which in turn gives the bass a little more kick.

If you're from the US it is available via Amazon for regular price after July 2. The album is called "Divine Codex" on Amazon instead of Omega Arcane, for some weird reason, but the band stated that it is the same. Link to amazon
