I ended up getting a Famicom Mini off Amazon for $100. It has 2 built-in tiny controllers. The emulation is the best I've seen. The only downside it the entire UI is in Japanese with no English option, but I was expecting that considering its intended audience.

I still want a NES Classic for its English UI and larger controllers, but I'm mot paying scalper prices and I lack the free time to go line-waiting hoping the 2 people ahead of me don't want what I want.

Until it's more readily available, I can muck my way through Japanese artwork to figure out which one is Super Mario Bros. 3.

If anyone's curious about it, it's available here - https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-classic-mini-family-computer-Japan/dp/B01M1VMFUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483411334&sr=8-1&keywords=Famicom+mini.

This is the kit I originally ordered. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CUMNIV8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are other cheaper kits, and for NES emulation, the kit I bought is a bit overkill. But I sprang for a slightly more expensive kit because I'm also using the Raspberry Pi for other things besides just an emulation box.

Best thing to do is just shop around. At minimum, you want a kit that comes with heatsinks, power supply, and a sturdy case. If you don't already have spare HDMI cables and an SD card, you'll want those as well, of course.

You'll also want controllers like these for NES emulation: https://www.amazon.com/Controller-Laptop-approx-Windows-Kernel-Classic/dp/B01N2YT0QT/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492532678&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+nes+controller

If you search for "USB NES controllers" on Amazon, you'll find a good many of them available. Shop around and read the reviews, although I imagine most are similar to one another.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered one of these this morning to use my NES Advantage on the classic but it sounds like my plan isn't going to work. At least I can still use it with the original controllers.

I wonder why the NES Advantage doesn't work? I thought it used the same controller signals as the standard controllers so I figured it would just work. Maybe it needs more power for the extra features (turbo, slow)?

I wonder if these would work with the Advantage?

You could use a tutorial here. It is a lot easier to do than it seems. I will tell you, you need a keyboard, Raspberry Pi 3, and an SD Card. Once you get that, here is where you can download it.. Then, just follow the instructions on Instructable. You really do not have to pay someone, it is a lot easier than it seems. If you want, you can even get a retro case (or normal one like I did) and get a retro controller. PM me if you need more help (I won't charge you if you need help, it is really easy)!

Edit: Ill do yo a bigger favor. Here are the things you will need

Raspberry Pi 3

Raspberry Pi 3 Charger Kit. A powerful phone charger or micro usb adapter should work, but someone can let me know if I am wrong.

SD Card Raspberry Pi 3

Keyboard, though, you probably have one of these at home

Retro Controller, not required, but recommended

You will need at least an 8 GB SD Card, but I recommend 32 GB

I bought this kit on Amazon. I had it running in 30 mins. Super easy and pretty cool.

u/OSiRiS341 · 1 pointr/minines

Just to show you how confident I am to get one this time around... I just ordered this case for it : https://www.amzn.com/B01LYFRCWF/

YAY! :)

I'm still looking for an official short-cable Classic NES controller but in the meantime this has worked out far better for me. I still have my original NES, so I've been able to play using the same exact controller from over 30 years ago! Plus the cable is way longer.

It works just like your signing into your regular Amazon thank god (I don't speak Spanish and was able to order easily). Keep in mind your bank or credit card company may charge a foreign transaction fee.

I bought this one a couple of weeks ago : Vilros Raspberry Pi RetroPie Arcade Gaming Kit With 2 Buffalo Classic USB Gamepads https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J4HTOS8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VDhxybJE686HV
At first it showed delivery after the 19th but then I got an email that the order would be delivered on the 16th. It is great. You only need the download the Roms and there are how-to pages . Will post the link once I get to my computer.

u/SocklessGirlsAreHot · 3 pointsr/minines

Thank you guys...I'm not entirely worried anymore about the setup as some fine folks here gave me some information, and I'm also buying a kit https://www.amazon.com/Vilros-Raspberry-RetroPie-Gaming-Kit/dp/B01J4HTOS8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1481743267&sr=8-3&keywords=retropie that has the controllers.

I am a bit worried about the setup but decided it would be a fun family project to set up at the very least.

Mainly going to be using it for NES and SNES.

u/joshmoneymusic · 2 pointsr/minines

I don't get why you guys who are so desperate don't just get the Famicom Classic. It's literally a Nintendo with pretty much the same games. Plus it looks way cooler and is Japanese. $116 and you can rest easy.

If you consider this official enough, you can use a third-party controller adapter with a real original NES controller, which seem to be pretty readily available on Ebay.

u/BuzzBotBaloo · 2 pointsr/minines

The 8Bitdo Retro Receiver in the first link plugs right into the controller port. We use it with a Wii u Pro Contreller and a Sony Dualshock 4 (PS4). Work's great with the except that we have to sync it every use.

We also have a Wii Classic Controller (and an extension cable).

u/ringomo9 · 2 pointsr/minines

if you go this route i'd suggest looking into the same adapter that can use both the NES and SNES. I'd also suggest looking into getting original SNES controllers (A/B/X/Y/L/R) instead of just original NES controllers (A/B). Reason being is down the road 1) Nintendo may come out with a SNES Classic and if you have one of these you won't have to hunt down an extra OEM controller, and 2) if you mod your NESC system with SNES or Sega games (yes it is possible) then you won't have to buy another adapter (and controller.

But there is no way for me to add a power source to either one? I don't think so. I would assume there would need to be a port for that. If the fix was this easy, I'd be very happy. Here are the two HDMI switches I bought:

Is anyone picking this up? Amazon says it's pre-order to be released tomorrow, Nov 30th. I decided to take a leap of faith on it.

u/awildwoodsmanappears · 1 pointr/minines

Yeah I bought a cheap one that didn't work, so I ordered the official one from Amazon for 27 bucks

Edit: 24 now: https://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-Pro-Japanese-Version/dp/B002C1AUP0/

I have one of these, they are $15 from Amazon.

Pressing the "start" and "select" button together resets the console, been working fine so far.

u/komentra · 1 pointr/minines

You talking about this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYFRCWF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_W-q8ybB0KASNP

If so I already have it. Just wasn't sure if I needed to take it out and put it in a tray or just keep it in a carry on. Don't want to be one of those people who ends up holding up the line because he doesn't know what he's doing, lol

u/mmaiden81 · 2 pointsr/minines

Bummer, very nice reproduction piece tho.

Edit: found it on amazon

There's also some on eBay, shipped from Japan.

I have the MyArcade wireless controller from bestbuy for $15. I've been very happy and haven't noticed a lag but I haven't played enough hours to really judge accurately. link

u/dboney · 2 pointsr/minines

This is the one I use and it works flawlessly.

u/zombie_breeder · 1 pointr/minines

I have not played with it but I have read a lot of mixed reviews. I have seen a bunch of people complaining about the signal dropping constantly during gameplay. Look through the reviews on Amazon and you will see what I mean. I almost bought the controller and passed because of the reviews.

Shit, glad I grabbed mine when I did, two days ago. It's $59.99 now.

u/MuTrain · 1 pointr/minines

I bought one from world wide distributors on Amazon. It is a legit OEM controller. The only thing is I had to pay $59.99 for it which sucked. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01IH5O186/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all
