  1. Yes, bring at least 5 copies of each document, won't hurt to have more.

  2. Bring a tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, razors and shaving cream. Plan on being there for at least 11 weeks (my reception was two weeks long before basic actually started, I forgot the reason why it was so long). And a bar of soap (you can buy more when you get there if you need to). Don't waste time or money on body wash and a loofah. A: You'll get laughed at and B: You'll stink anyway like everyone else.

  3. You will be issued all the clothing you'll need when you get there. Just bring 3 pair clean socks and 3 clean pair underwear.

  4. Micellaneous: Bring $40 cash with you and your bank card, a voided check (to set up your direct deposit) don't sign up for the the whatever-its-called on-post-bank account, you'll never find a bank branch anywhere at home. Your phone, and any information on your dependents if you have any as well as a copy of your lease. As national guard on IDT status, you should be getting BAH type II (for all the haters out there, yes, you should get BAH, you're not going active so you still have a home to pay for when you get back, I got BAH at basic, AIT,and while I was deployed, search my comment history for the referenced DOD policy).

    NOTES:

You will have an opportunity to go to the PX prior to the start of basic or right at the beginning of basic. There you can buy stationary to write back home with, your PT shoes, a cheap $30 timex sport watch is HIGHLY recommended. You really don't have to bring much of anything other than the bare essentials. You won't have the time to enjoy much of anything and most everything you'll need will be either issued or you'll have the opportunity to buy it at the PX when you get there.

> Take care of your feet, get yourself a good comfortable pair of boots that fit you right when you are done with AIT. The issued boots are shit. Buy once cry once.

My question is.... Where were you 17years ago???

> Anytime the full time staff says they need voulenteers, voulenteer if you are able. If they see you are available and willing to help the unit it'll only open more doors for you.

I shot up the ranks quick without even thinking about promotion so I can attest to this comment.

Adding hyperlinks for quick references. FM 3-21.8, INFANTRY DRILLS and ATP 3-21.8

> If you are in good shape and can meet ranger PT standards try everything you can to go to ranger school. There is no other school that will give you leadership experience and all around knowledge. Also the tab will grant you instant respect from all ranks and place you above everyone when it comes to promotions.

A really good preparation for passing/maxing pt tests for me was a book written by a retired Captian. Forgot his name but I met him and he also signed the copy of his book for me. Super cool guy. It is mainly for killing pt tests, but other routine weight lifting plans are encouraged once out of basic training. Here is the Amazon link. Do yourself a favor and get this book (10 bucks).

Anker makes some pretty great stuff that I've used for field exercises for a while now. I picked up an external battery and a solar charger for about a hundred bucks total, and they're pretty fantastic for this sort of thing. The battery can charge an iPhone 4 from dead to full 6-8 times on a single charge, and can be charged off the wall when you have access to an outlet. The solar is a just-in-case measure.

You can practice with USGS 1:24,000 scale UTM maps (also known as 7.5 minute scale), but you will need a protractor in that scale: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003NAOERO

UTM is the same as MGRS except for the 100,000 grid square identifier. UTM just uses numbers instead of two letters.

https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/ is a good source of historical maps, once you figure out the map name for the location you want, you can search for a more up to date PDF version on data.gov or buy a paper copy on the USGS website.

Another good site is https://www.topoquest.com

Here's what I decided on based on the features of the watches these guys picked. I would've gotten one of the ones they did, but this one has a vibration alarm function, which a couple of soldiers in the review section thought was great. It's pretty big, but the rectangular shape should make it look a little smaller than the usual wrist-mounted tactical wall clock.

"Glover liners" is what you're looking for. You will get them in basic training so idk if I would buy them unless you really want them.

Chapstick.

Whether its the dry air in the barracks or the sun burning your lips, Chapstick is clutch. Just make sure its the standard clear/white kind, not some stupid Mt. Dew or other stupid flavor/color.

I just bought this to help cuz I've worked waaay too hard and too long to build mass. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B8JTYVW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not going to even be close to borderline when it comes time to go back in.

Get one of those ab-wheel thingies:

https://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Health-Fitness-Training-Exercise/dp/B0016BJ5N0/

I went from struggling to get 50 situps to being able to do 80, just using this thing twice a week for four months. In my experience one rep with the ab wheel = two reps of GI situps. Start with 12-15 reps with the ab wheel and work your way up to 30 or 40, then you won't stress that portion of the test.

Don't buy the Army brand watch they sell at the PX, it will break quickly. I have worn this watch through 11b OSUT, 100' underwater, and a ton of other places that should have killed it. I'm sure there are a ton of other watches just as dependable out there, but I can vouch for this one. Whatever you get, make sure it has an alarm and a stopwatch. You'll need both for BCT.
