I was in the same boat as you around 6 months ago. Now that I have a some quality In Ear Monitors, I have no idea how I survive on $15 pairs for so long. Before you get overwhelmed with the vast number of options out there (like I did), here's a guide that you should check out.

I spent a good 2-3 weeks trying to pick which pair I wanted and couldn't decide on anything, simply because there were so many different types (look-wise, as well as sound). Eventually I ended up going with the Etymotic HF5's. The sound quality is amazing coming from apple/skullcandy type headphones. What I love about them most is that they aren't as bass heavy as most other pairs that big name brands pump out every month. I still remember trying them out on the bus commute to school the day I got them... All I can say is that there was an incredible amount of great music hidden under the overwhelming bass that I'd dealt with unknowingly for so many years. The end of Somewhat Damaged made me feel like I was listening to a completely different song.

You've got the right idea though. Ask around, check out that guide as well as sites like Head-Fi. It'd be impossible to try them all out before investing so do some research, get some input and when you decide on a pair just make sure you get them from a legitimate seller and you'll be good.

Good luck! You're making the right decision though and your price point is perfect seeing as though this will be your first decent pair. If you need any more help, feel free to ask.

I've got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's. They're fantastic headphones, though you do have to be patient with them. The drivers need to be "burned in" per se. It takes about 40-60 hours of listening to get the sound you want out of them. I've put over 200 hours into them, and they sound phenomenal. The bass is low and resonant, mids are prevalent but not too crazy, and the highs are a bit lacking, but still nice and crisp.

They're a bit on the high-end for your budget, however, they've worked very well when listening to NIN, so I'd definitely recommend them. They work very well with lots of electronic music, and depending on how you use them, favor deep bass, and cleaner-sounding music. Now, I know NIN is nowhere near clean-sounding. But, they (in my experience) don't do well with heavy rock/metal, or overly-distorted instrumentation. So, keep that in mind.

For those wondering, this is a remix by Trent for an industrial band called Machines of Loving Grace. He did 4 remixes for this song, "Burn Like Brilliant Trash" on this EP/single

These work really well too. I'm on my 3rd pair with probably 100+ concerts and they sound great and are comfortable.

Better price than I paid for mine.

Edit: If you really want one of the special editions, go for the 2 Disc SACD Deluxe Edition. It doesn't come with the videos, but you won't be able to get the full resolution sound with it unless you have a dedicated DVD-A player, which are hard to come by. However, a lot of Blu-ray players these days coming from Sony will play SACD.

If you tend to buy a lot of posters at shows, but don't have the wall space or money to hang them, I recommend getting an art portfolio to keep them in. Keeps them flat, and it's easy to flip through. I have one full of prints, including one for every NIN show I've been to.

Here's what I'm running:

Table: Technics SL-1200 MK 2 (with KAB Fluid Damper mod)

Cartridge: Audio Technica AT-440MLA

Soundstage: Harmon Kardon 730 "Twin Powered"

Speakers: custom cabinets with drivers from PAS, a company known for quality recording studio monitors.

Overall very happy with the way the system play together. I'm really looking forward to spinning a high-quality pressing of The Fragile in the near future.

Amazon also has some from 3rd party sellers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000000GQ1/ (There's a $7 one fulfilled by amazon)

Not necessarily.

There was a series of books "in conversation" with film directors.

Example: Lynch on Lynch

Excellent format, really.

Well, that wasn't exactly successful. I got a Pyle PP999 and while it's definitely louder, it's also so distorted as to be unlistenable. The signal is far too hot, I believe. At this point, I want to throw everything at the wall and call it an art installation.
