Got one last week. Great cheap device, very good for running Kodi and watching movies.
My only complaint is that x265/hevc playback is inconsistent, meaning it sometimes (usually after manually going backwards/forwards to some point in the video) starts showing pixelated/skipped frames... but when that happens, it's just a matter of closing Kodi (and clearing it out of memory by pressing the 'list of programs' main on-screen button (square icon at the bottom right) and clicking on the "X" right besides the program title.
My plan was to reflash it with an AOSP GSI (which is reportedly working OK on this device), but so far this has not been necessary, and I was in a hurry to start using it, so I'm still using original firmware. Perhaps later...
BTW: I bought the screen protector /u/e-paper_tiger recommended and I'm pretty satisfied; I also bought this folio case and it works great for protecting the device:

I love the simple touch and have bought a few used over the years. However, it’s a pretty old device all things considered. You have to assume that the batteries are toast when buying a nook of this vintage.
It’s actually an easy fix if you feel up to the challenge. Batteries can be found on eBay and amazon, it’s one Phillips screw under the power button. 5 minutes tops to replace. Depending on how much you paid it’s well worth the fix, but I’m sure you could get a refund if you like.

I picked up this one as a temporary solution but I started to really like it. It came with a micro-fiber cloth and two-day shipping only took one day. TrendyDigital Case. I originally thought it would be kind of throwaway but it allows me to carry my nook everywhere without any stress of something happening to it.
I bought it in the interim before I get my hands on this one, from Pad and Quill, a case I'm very excited about, but it takes a bit to ship.
Also, I first had my eyes on the Oberon case that was also mentioned. They seem to be made with great care but I was bummed by the fact that they don't protect it all over and that the colors and designs are limited. That, plus the high price, and it wasn't worth it.
Of course these are all boring and not related to anything but I've found that GelaSkins don't always offer much protection from anything too serious.
This is the one I'd get if I could do it again. not a zipper but very form fitting (held closed with a elastic clasp):
http://www.amazon.com/Speck-Products-SPK-A0546-Fitfolio--Reader/dp/B0065GASZU
Here's a zippered rooCase (the velcro seems like a little goofy/bulky set up). I have a different style rooCase, and it's okay

> if I root my Nook can I tilt my Nook to landscape to view PDFS?
Yes, you can do all of these: rotate to landscape, view PDFs, and both simultaneously. (Rotation must be done manually since Nook e-readers don't have gravity sensors.) I use Rotation Locker and OfficeSuite Professional, which allows double-tapping to zoom in and out as well as multi-touch pinch gestures.
Yeah I dont really want one built it. That would just be unnecessary bulk. What do you think of this one? http://www.amazon.com/Exact-degree-leather-Support-Function/dp/B00AAKLWXY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
I really want it in white haha. And I am confused at what the whole 360 degree thing is with the cases. What is it and does this http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimbook-Function-Manufacturer-Warranty/dp/B00AAKLE00/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1374171110&sr=8-2&keywords=nook+hd%2B+case have it?
This is the one I have, and I loves it :3
Check what u/DiDgr8 said first, but my advice (used to work for B&N in the nook department) is drop the first edition and pick up a refurbished simple touch (https://www.amazon.com/NOOK-Simple-Touch-Certified-Pre-Owned/dp/B00ESW6X16) <- for example. It's a massively superior device and you can find the refurbs for under $60
No problem, the sdcard slot was the main difference that made me choose the nook over something like a Nexus 10.
Also, I think you can get them really cheap if you choose a refurbished unit. They are in perfect working order and will cost you ~130 USD http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Pre-Owned-Barnes-Noble-BNTV600-16GB-CPO/dp/B00AGAS6XW
.
I've been trying to find this answer too. Here's what I've read: That the Color Nook does not support usb keyboards. However, if you root it, and add the android app Nook Tweaks, you can turn on usb access. Then the nook will be able to make use of a keyboard cover like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Keyboard-Protective-Leather-Protector-Holder/dp/B008HNIW2K/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1346371681&sr=1-2&keywords=mini+usb+keyboard+case
If you still have the original proprietary charger, it has information printed on the adapter that listed the voltage and amps. It should also list if it's a positive tip or a negative tip symbol.
With that information you should be able to use something like this and get it to work.
As long as it's not the physical port in the Nook that has worn out. Unfortunately, plugging and unplugging flexes the solder connections and eventually they wear out. Since the Nook probably has the connector soldered directly to the mainboard, it won't be possible to "repair" it.
This one is the current leader in the clubhouse:
http://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Bright-XtraFlex2-Clip-On-Version/dp/B002CMLDT6/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header
This is the case I bought for mine. Personally, I'd go with the case at all times as it gives more places to grip the tablet. It doesn't require me to continually move it in and out of a case or configuration.
There are a couple of cases on the market with a bluetooth keyboard, but I haven't tried any.
Except the nook HD has a propritary connector betwen charger and device.

just found the fitfolio from speck:
http://www.amazon.com/Speck-Products-FitFolio-Touch-E-Reader/dp/B00A88YXN4/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
it's not sold anymore though, do you know of similar cases?
Kandle
I know this borders on illegal, but purchase a nook from BN and just switch the cables. Then return the nook to BN.
Edit: or just buy a cheap replacement on amazon
www.amazon.com/Charge-Cable-Barnes-Noble-Black/dp/B0032UP32K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344379976&sr=8-1&keywords=nook+charge+usb
If you root it, Android allows for "USB tethering", which ought to do the trick. I have no way of testing this with a Nook though.
Also, there's always one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Panda-Ultra-Wireless-Adapter-150Mbps/dp/B00762YNMG/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Only a sucker buys the memory chips in stores; amazon.com gets you a 16gb chip for $15 while an 8gig card cost $20.
