How it goes with the xbox 360 controllers, is that there is only two ways of connecting to the PC:

1.) Directly connected with a controller with the cable built in, not any of the controllers with batteries or battery packs. The Play and Charge cable is only for charging your controller(s)' and/or playing directly connected to a xbox360. But not supported for PC play.

2.) A specific wireless dongle that will allow your wireless controllers to connect wirelessly to your computer.

The links are only to Amazon, and there will definitely be better deals to be found. Hopefully this helps out.
Good Luck, Have Fun.

Mini PCI is a standard that some motherboards have (Looks like this: http://psg.i.lithium.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/72899iDB437F35348C63E3?v=v2), a lot of laptops use it as a standard for plugging in wi-fi cards since normal PCI would not fit at all with any laptop.

Here is the thing with Mini PCI-E cards, some laptops allow you to swap it out easily while others require some disassembly. I looked up the HP ENVY 17 and if it is the same or similar model to this video (https://youtu.be/W5nAvEmTy-w), it should be a easy swap. You will need to replace the part that is to the left of the RAM. It is pretty simple to swap it out. First, take a phillips screwdriver and unscrew the 1 or 2 screws holding it in place, it will pop up on its own usually. Take the replacement one and pop it in, lay it flush with the screw hole and screw it back in. Make a note of the wire location before starting this unless the instructions note to plug it in differently (usually pretty standard). You might need to download additional drivers and uninstall the old one from device manager, just follow the instructions it comes with and it should lead you where you need to go.

Secondly, it looks like it is using a half height PCI-E card. You will need to get something like this if you want to upgrade: https://www.amazon.com/Intel-3160-HMWG-R-Wireless-Bluetooth-Supports/dp/B00MY9EVHI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484239061&sr=8-3&keywords=mini+pci. Half height is usually what most laptops I have worked on use and from the look of it the ENVY uses it as well.

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

thanks for the detailed reply!

i may as well get another xbox controller as it’s pretty much the same price as the adapter, this one seem good?
https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Controller-White-one/dp/B01GW3H3U8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=xbox%2Bone%2Bs%2Bcontroller&qid=1564742288&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

edit: i’d get the used very good one from rock30games or do you think i should just get a new one (they’re like 94% positive and have 25k seller reviews and it’s “very good” condition)

For gaming, the monitor looks good. Here is a review.

If you have an AMD card and you want a 24" monitor this one is better.

I don't have this monitor, but I personally like Asus monitors because they usually can get pretty tall so I don't need a monitor stand. I have the PB277Q and it looks nice, performs well and I have not had any issues with it in the year I have had it.

This depends, the 24" with have a higher PPI by about 10 (not that big of a deal really) and the 27" will be larger. Personaly I would get the 27" if they are the same price like they are on Amazon.

Thank you very much for the detailed response that answers everything but it also raises a ton of

Questions

  • It says I barely use any of the total system RAM, is RAM not the monitor memory?
  • Aren't hard drives and memory the same thing?
  • What does the case refer to in "case fans"? Don't power supplies have a built-in fan?
  • Why do I need an extra 150-200w over? To be safe?
(Extending off of that, someone below has recommended a 600w corsair, from which I found this, is that a good fix?
  • On that note, is it compatible?
  • Where does the 2500 come from, in "Intel HD Graphics 2500"?
  • What does full spec mean? (Doesn't maximize the Radeon R9 380's efficiency?)
  • What's the difference between this and this? (holy shit gaming monitors are expensive, is 160 Hz really worth 600$ more?)

Bonus Questions (unrelated, feel free to ignore)

  • WPS = ?
  • Panel = Monitor?

Did you install the drivers for your controller? If you did and its still not working, get a wired Microsoft Xbox 360 controller or wired Microsoft Xbox 1 controller. You can see it's much cheaper to get the wired 360 controller. If you absolutely want a wireless controller, you could get either the wireless Xbox 360 controller and the Windows Xbox 360 adapter or wireless Xbox 1 controller with Windows adapter (old version) or wireless Xbox 1 controller with Windows adapter (new version). Since they're made by Microsoft, they work fine with Windows. Logitech also makes a few good controllers, the wired Logitech Gamepad F310 and the wireless Logitech Gamepad F710. I personally have a wired Microsoft 360 controller and a wireless Logitech F710 and from my experience, the official Microsoft controllers work best with games. I hope that helps.

If you have WIFI available in the house you could source a cheap USB wifi adapter, for example this one at Amazon. There are plenty to choose from, some are better than others, so find one that suits your needs. If no WIFI you could try a powerline connection but those are a bit more spendy and hit or miss if they will work for your particular house/situation. As an example this TP Link kit. Just make sure you source it from a place that accepts returns should it not work out for you.

You could use a splitter but that does not account for the internals of your headsets being quite different to the amplifier built in to your speakers. Usually this causes volume imbalance, which you could probably fix a bit with the volume knob on your speakers but it's not the best. Speakers with a headphone connector would be the best for that part but that won't fix the microphone part.

The StarTech splitter that was linked only works for devices with a TRRS socket (normally you only have TRS, so one Ring in the middle, RR has double rings).

If you want to be sure that won't break shit you'd need to post the motherboard/audiodevice/case -model depending on where this singular output is on your PC. That way we could try to see if it has a TRRS connector instead of just TRS.

You could also get a DAC (Digital Audio Converter) which would take up an USB port. Most have both audio out and microphone in. Unfortunately this installs as a separate 'sound card' and different audio device so you'd need to set up preferences for 'playback' and 'communications'.

Also some programs (even Skype goddammit) ignore the OS settings for which audio device is active/preferred so it would require some tinkering from time to time when you get a DAC.

Edit: example of a DAC this one was linked from the StarTech splitter as a related product. I can't vouch for this particular product etc. or that is even a good price. Just so you can see what it would look like.

So, for $973 here is the list of components you can actually buy:

cooler, which is optional

motherboard

Cpu

Ram

Gpu

hard drive

case

PSU

I did what I could to save where I could and allocate elsewhere. You won't need to upgrade too soon from this moving forward. If you'd rather go cheaper I can help with that as well.

Yes you need an adapter for your wireless 360 controller. Just plug this into one of the USB ports on your steamlink and you should be good to go. I have the same setup at home.

u/Geshman · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

So there is a wire that comes off of the monitor and into this box, then the wires coming off the box go into your PC? It seems you have one, possibly two options.

If the cable that goes into that box (I believe it is a mini display port cable) is NOT removable from the back of the monitor, my suggestion would be to get a cable or adapter that you will plug that boxes cable into, allowing you to plug into the Wii U.

If you can get the mini display port cable to disconnect from the monitor then this cable or this adapter should work. This option seems more likely to work if the mini display port cable can disconnect.

Note: Mac connections can be finicky, and it could possibly be proprietary (only work with other Mac products) so neither of these options are guaranteed to work, but I'd be willing to bet the $5 on it.

Also: you make the links into words by formatting it like so words

Is this it? I've seen those at Walmart before but I always thought they were just for the actual consoles haha.

u/kkjdroid · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

This one is the only model on Amazon with BT support. You can also get this adapter to connect up to eight Xbone controllers of any type.

u/alesbabnik · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

The headset works perfectly and the audio is decent (SteelSeries Siberia V3 Gaming Headset). I thought about getting this https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Adapter-Windows-AU-MMSA/dp/B00IRVQ0F8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482869906&sr=8-1&keywords=sabrent+usb

But might not be good for gaming don't know

u/sotodefonk · 2 pointsr/pcgamingtechsupport

You need an adapter or a cable. I suppose your card is like this, there is a direct HDMI output, use that to connect one of your monitors, and then buy and adapter or cable from DVI to HDMI, or DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter, whatever is cheaper or in your store.

u/JJCXV · 2 pointsr/pcgamingtechsupport

I just ordered myself...

this motherboard

and

this RAM

hopefully that's all I need to buy! I'll stick with the 970 till I can afford something better because I am poor now! :P

But your 1080 is gonna have Display Ports on the back and using that is gonna give you better quality I think so get this instead

I think a 3.5mm audio cable that has a female jack on one end and then splits into a headphone plug and mic plug on the other end would work better. something like this: Maeline 3.5mm Female to 2 Male Gold Plated Headphone Mic Audio Y Splitter Flat Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PYZ2BT4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_YkcRwbA2CMW70 (maybe not this exact one but same idea)

OP, all you would have to do is plug your headphones into this cable, then put the microphone end into the microphone port on your PC, and the audio end into the audio port on your PC.

>Do they both work the moment they're plugged in?

The drivers are automatically installed once you plug them in, no 3rd party software is needed.

>Also, do they have wired versions of the controllers?

Xbox 360, yes. Xbox One, I don't believe so. The Xbox One controller has a micro USB port that works when plugged into a PC.

The Xbox 360 wireless controller doesn't work when plugged in to a PC, so if you go with an Xbox 360 controller, either grab a wired one or buy this with the wireless one.

u/brain-eating-amoeba · 3 pointsr/pcgamingtechsupport

Sure.

You got some choices.

I run a Nvidia card at home (970 gtx) I do not know the answers to AMD flavors... in fact, what I am about to throw at you might not be possible under AMD (I don't know).

Enable streaming through GeForce Experience. Then, create a VPN between your router and your laptop (or possibly the PC and laptop) and run software called 'MoonLight'.

Done and done.

(so you can follow along, a VPN extends your home network - placing your laptop on the same network as your PC! this is important as GeForce experience won't stream remotely)

However, this sucks balls. It requires a couple hours of configuration and you are kind of in the hospital.

Fuck that running.

Get one of these:

A PS4 bluetooth adapter.

Then subscribe to PSNOW.

I was thinking of using this for hdmi and this for audio, wouldn't it work? I'd really prefer if I could keep it down to a single cable.

u/ExquisiteBlizzard · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

There was only the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I think the consensus in r/buildapc was that I have to buy a cable that splits the mic and headphone. (Ex: Here)

I never buy Gigabyte stuff, any hardware failure I've ever had was with Gigabyte products. Damn, those 1050ti's are cheap though...

u/Richard_MF_Nixon · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

I doubt it. Even if it was enough you'd be pushing it hard. EVGA's power supplies are solid, and this one here should do the trick.

u/mushsuite · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

I suspect your VGA converter. Generally, you don't want to do analog to/from digital conversions on the cable, as things get weird. HDMI to DVI would be the right way to go.

Here’s the monitor: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-SB220Q-Ultra-Thin-Frame-Monitor/dp/B07CVL2D2S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=acer+sb220q&qid=1565054967&s=gateway&sprefix=acer+&sr=8-1

The monitor seemed like it was brand new when we got it, not too long after we got it though, it started showing symptoms of a black screen and a few lines across the screen, now it displays it constantly and the colors of the lines are brighter and blocking the Windows home. I’ve heard of other users having this problem and even tried to switch cables but that did nothing for them or me. I’m not sure if this monitor was damaged when it arrived because it’s an LCD monitor and it says things like keeping it away from sunlight, moisture and rain. Also says to keep it in range of a room with -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit which I have done. We might have to get a replacement if I can’t figure anything else out by tomorrow. This is ridiculous.

u/Zalgo165 · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

Yeah it honeslty makes no sense to me but maybe I found the problem?

So after that issue I turned everything back to normal and I don’t seem to have the issue anymore. By back to normal I mean, I only use the headphones when I’m streaming (for sound separation) and to connect it i use a cheap USB soundcard this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IRVQ0F8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0ootDb8T6M4A6

I noticed that when this problem starered I would hear a “pop” while everything disconnected for a second, so maybe it could be this thing shorting out and affecting all my other devices for a second? Think knight try to buy another one to see how it works.

This is the current one hook up to my PC but it annoys me sometimes it'll say dns is not connected or something along those lines and i need to go through the hassle of troubleshooting

I also used a usb wifi when my powerline gives out and when do i do a speed test i get around the same results could it be something other than my internet source? I keep updating my drivers on my mobo and see no results. faulty mobo? (Asus Z97-A)
