I played the TCG years ago and I'm still playing the 3DS games, but I've got a Christmas wishlist here that sparked some questions. Can someone help me?

  • If a kid wants specific cards, where should I go about ordering them? I remember using eBay back in the day, but I found a bunch of other sites when I did a quick search. Is one more reputable than the others?
  • If a kid wants to get into the game, which of the basic starter decks would be a good choice? I assume we'd stick with SuMo and not buy legacy stuff, but there's a dozen options within that. Ideally, I'd like to get two decks that don't precisely "counter" one another. Going by the VGC, I'd say Steel Sun + Bright Tide would be a good combination, but I'm not sure if the same rules apply.
  • Is this playmat from 1999 still relevant? I haven't played the TCG in like 10+ years, but I remember the playmat being really helpful when I was learning the rules.
  • Does the game still use coins and damage tokens? Anyone have links to some fun ones? Etsy, Pokemon Centre, whatever.

I went to office max (now also office depot) and bought a Case-It Binder (i'm using The Sidekick, but theres a ton of other options).
All major supply stores should have this (staples, office depot, office max)

https://www.amazon.com/Case-Sidekick-2-Inch-Removable-D-901-BLU/dp/B000SDWBA6

Theres a removable organizer that i'm using for my rulebook/erratta printouts

---

has a carrying strap and i fit 40 pages of (crappy) sleeves in it, stacked with full playsets (4) of almost every card on both sides. I fit well over 2500-3000 cards in weight in it and it's perfectly fine.

It uses some kind of really hard plastic on the backs front and back cover that hurt a little when i did a punch test. :P Not the flimsy crap you see in the ultrapro binders.

(no, i didn't stack the Ex's haha)

Can't really beat this for only 20 bucks...

Good luck!

Edit: if you need any more pictures or have questions about this specific binder - feel free to let me know. This is by far the best budget card holder i've ever owned and is 2-3 times the quality as similar priced ones from the card shops.

>can you maybe give me a resource to look at the champion decks from last year that you speak of and they're pricing?

Here's a listing on Amazon. If you live in the US I recommend buying through that link as it's a very good price. Their starting price point is usually $10-12 per deck at B&M stores when they're first released in November but after that their availability is a bit spottier and they usually run for closer to $15 a pop, so getting all four decks for under $50 shipped is a good deal.

One other thing: I recommend purchasing card sleeves to prolong the life of the cards you are playing if you haven't already. Even the most common staples like Pokemon Communication are still worth a dollar, and replacing a 5-cent sleeve is a lot easier than having to replace frequently-played cards for a dollar or more. If you really want to go cheap, you can get transparent sleeves that usually come in packs of 100 for $1, earning them the name "penny sleeves." If you're looking for something more substantial, see the recommendations in this thread.

I'd say you have 2 pretty good options as to what to buy him, it just depends on if you wanted to get him pre built decks or a large amount of packs.

If you wanted to do the packs I would recommend an Elite Trainer Box. An ETB comes with 8 packs of cards, 5 of each type of energy, status and damage markers, 65 card sleeves, and the box itself is designed to be used as storage.

There are several available.

As for pre built decks, there are quite a few to choose from. There is a new Arena Deck that comes with 2 pre built 60 card decks, perfect for 2 people to play and learn with. It's rather cheap as well, and you could supplement it with additional packs or additional pre built decks.

I'll mention that the pre built decks are definitely meant for younger players and are not very good in competitive play, but that's more of a disclaimer than anything. They're still fun and perfect to learn with.

When I purchase singles online they almost always come in one of two sleeve types:

  • BCW Topload Card Holders [Amazon Link]
  • Ultra Pro Semi Rigid Card Holders [Amazon Link]

    The BCW ones are more expensive, but very sturdy. Definitely the best for card protection. I would absolutely use these for my most expensive cards.

    The Semi Rigid ones are a little floppy, but still durable. They have a little extra flap at the top. They are a lot cheaper than the BCW ones.

I use this, it holds playsets of your valuable cards, doesn't have rings to fuck your cards up and has a stiff front unlike the ultra pro binders which can bend and damage your cards.

Now to be clear, binders, while convenient for accessing your cards are not ideal for keeping them in perfect condition. Sleeved and in a box such as an elite trainer box or a BCW box is the ideal way to prevent any damage to your cards.

As for commons and uncommons storing them unsleeved in a BCW 4 or 5 row is more than sufficient since you will accumulate a large amount of them over time.

Someone else in the thread mentioned the Ultimate Guard ZipFolio which is honestly probably the best binder out there, im just not interested in moving all of my cards from the binders they are currently in.

If you plan to double sleeve cards, here are some cheap inner-sleeves.

https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Standard-Pro-Fit-Transparent-Sleeves/dp/B005HXLH3O

They are designed to fit the card snuggly, I've used these to sleeve some ex cards to keep them from warping. They are small enough though that then the cards should be able to fit in a regular sleeve.

The desiccant is a great idea. I would suggest keeping the cards in an area of the house which won't go through huge temperature swings. The warping occurs because the foil layer doesn't absorb moisture as much as the "cardboard" portion of the card.

For scaling or not doing drugs?

If you google a bit, there's an entire thread dedicated to scaling here, but it's a different card game although the principles are the same. There's a ton of experts and whatnot, but the basic idea is simple enough.

This is a pretty cheap investment. $10 scale. You can use it for culinary or scientific purposes also.

As for drugs, I guess I just never got into them as a teenager.

u/I_Hate_Robots · 1 pointr/pkmntcg

Best bet for storing a large lot of cards is cardboard boxes such as those you're seeing online. Anything will do, really. If you're concerned about the long term health of the cards you'll need to keep them in a watertight container in a temperature controlled room.

As for card sleeves, most folks will use one of the following (listed from most to least durable, roughly):

I just ordered one from Decktutor so i'm looking forward to trying it out. I just hope it isn't a fake :(

Here is a post I made earlier about getting into the game.

>To give you an idea on deck building, here are some information that you will find helpful.

>https://www.reddit.com/r/pkmntcg/wiki/budgetdecks

>Now, I will also give you some important information what stuff you need to play your deck.

>Purchasing cards
=============

>For purchasing cards, I recommend buying a booster box and an elite trainer box for each new set that comes out then purchase singles. An elite trainer box also gives 5 of each Energy type and burn and poison markers as well as nice dice! One for flipping and the others for keeping track of damage They're made of acrylic, not cheaper cardboard that come with preconstructed decks.

>Sleeves
============================

>Also, I can't stress this enough but, you need sleeves. I recommend Ultra Pro Matte Sleeves. You would need 66mmx91 mm ones to fit Pokemon cards.

>You can never have enough sleeves. Extras are used to replace ones that look worn out. If you play with worn sleeves (marked) you can get in trouble.

>Playmat
>======================

>Another important thing is a play mat. I really don't like seeing players struggle to scoop up cards on the table instead of a mat; damaging their sleeves in the process!

>http://www.trollandtoad.com/p1064929.html

>Deck Boxes
>==============

>Get a couple deck boxes. I prefer boxes that match the colour of my sleeves. These tower ones are the ones I use. They store a lot of cards and you don't need dice bags to store your dice!

>Dice
>=====================

>Lastly, you need dice. They are used in place of damage counters and coin flipping. For coin flipping die (in competitive play we use them instead of coins), you need a clear one. The rules state you need to.

>Storing cards
>=============

>I store cards in a mix of binders and boxes. For binders, you either can use these or try to save some money and get these and these

>For boxes to store non-EXs, secret rares and Trainers, I use [these[(http://www.amazon.com/Trading-Card-Storage-Baseball-Basketball/dp/B00RS7K05I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448893048&sr=8-1&keywords=card+storage+case+jammers)

We use these storage boxes We organize them by set and type except for trainers which live in their own box. Set/Type makes it very easy to both sort and find what were looking for (E.g "check the psychic section in Phantom Forces"). When we open packs or go to a pre-release, we just put them into type piles as we open them; when we get home we drop them into their section of the box using plastic dividers.

Trainers are sorted by Supporter, tools, stadiums, balls, spirit links, energy manipulation, etc.

u/icebear518 · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

also if you buy the trainer box http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Card-Game-Elite-Trainer/dp/B00IA2UWUI you get packs and some energy cards as well of all types

No it doesn't. The Tag Bolt print is also A block (see here). The actual set in which a card releases no longer have any bearing on its legality, only the block marking (or to use the actual term in Japan, "regulation mark"). Note that Japan has not yet reprinted anything from an earlier block into a later block since the start of SM. All reprints have retained the original regulation mark, regardless of whether it was an alt art or not.

We're suspecting that there will be some reprints (with new regulation marks) in the upcoming SwSh base set, if only because staples like Switch will rotate otherwise. Or at least, only rotate for a short time: SwSh base releases 6 Dec, so there will be a week in which rotated cards have no later regulation mark reprint.
