I suggest looking for “Trainer Kits” like this one:

Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon Trainer Kit Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu Card Game https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3MXZDbZNC8STP

They come with instruction guides, a playmat, all the necessary tokens and two training decks that can be merged into a full deck once you understand the mechanics and get additional decks to play with.

It’s a pretty good starting place for both of your to learn, and the deck(s) are designed to be somewhat simple for beginners.

After you have a good understanding of the game you can get additional 60 card Game Decks, or can five deep into the rabbit hole of buying packs and trying to construct your own decks. For new players I’d suggest Game Decks and a few boosters or even a Trainer Box (8 packs, card sleeves, tokens, additional energy, and a storage box with dividers.)

Varieties of any of these should be easy enough to find on Amazon if you search for the right terms, or can typically be found at any big box store that sells TCGs (Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc...)

I hope this helps and you get everything you need.

u/whiterabbit108 · 7 pointsr/pokemon

You could buy him a tin or two like these

Or be super awesome and buy him something like this but this box is really only worth it if he actually plays the TCG. If he just collects the cards, stick with these- booster packs.

And every kid needs a binder to put their cards in!

If your son does not know how to play the card game but would like to learn how to you could get him this.

Or you could be the best mom ever and get him a 2ds, 3ds or 3ds XL and a copy of pokemon X or Y!

u/mrogersj5 · 2 pointsr/pokemon

I'd suggest asking him to write down some of his favorite pokemon. Each game as a different selection of critters, including the starter pokemon (who are usually big favorites) and the rare, powerful legendary pokemon (usually the critter on the box).

As far as which game to choose, it is hard to go wrong with classic pokemon games. X and Y are about a year old but are good quality games. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire came out two days ago (they're remakes of the third pokemon games from 2003) and are also high quality.

My real suggestion would be this - figure out if your son is a kid who will spend tons of time invested in the game. If they are, get them a game for Christmas and a handbook like this. I am a teacher and I have a fifth of my class who love to look up, share, and draw with these books.

u/God_of_Illiteracy · 1 pointr/pokemon

Ok, let's truly see how much that would have cost you in reality.

By going through your post history I found this lovely graduation photo of what I presume to be you.

Now with that, along with this article from the LA times, we can guess that you will make around $2.3 Million in your lifetime. However, that information is a little dated since it is using data from 1999 graduates. So, for the sake of inflation and because I assume you have a good job, let's round that to $3 Million.

Now, it is just simple math. $3,000,000 x .25 = $750,000.

So, if that was a true saying, you just spent $750,000 on a $20 plushie.

To put that in perspective, you can buy a lot of things with $750,000. Some of these things include:

The general opinion is I should not continue due to costs of ink and paper.

Thank you all for your feedback. Yes, this is exactly the same as Bulbapedia but I did not know there was a national b/w dex out.

Coreus stated that he found one on amazon that looks pretty awesome.

It was just an idea I was throwing around.

u/Digipatd · 2 pointsr/pokemon

I understand, but that's still quite an undertaking. It'll be something to be proud of once it's complete! I'm just collecting the cartridges.

For completing the National Pokedex, get the half-sized Pokedex book. I have it and it is an awesome resource. You might want to start running through HeartGold/SoulSilver to get the exclusives now, because it takes a little while.

u/gyarados_ouroboros · 2 pointsr/pokemon

I'm playing Heart Gold and working on the National Pokedex. In the Safari Zone, I can place up to 30 items of different types in each zone to increase my chances of finding certain pokemon. I also own this strategy guide:

https://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-HeartGold-SoulSilver-Official-National/dp/0307468054

and in the Safari Zone section it has several examples of certain pokemon requiring more than 30 items (for example, Cacnea requires 35 forest items). How am I supposed to find these pokemon if I can only place 30 items in each zone?

u/TheSandmanECW · 1 pointr/pokemon

Well I recently picked up this http://www.amazon.com/Pok%C3%A9mon-Official-Postgame-Adventure-Strategy/dp/0804162573

It serves as a pokedex and post game strategy guide(which I love the idea of) and lists all 150 original pokemon plus all the other ones included in X&Y. Honestly the only reason I picked it up in the first place is because it specifically reminds me of this same old pokedex book. I dont even own a 3ds or any of the new Pokemon games.

u/CrazyKyle987 · 2 pointsr/pokemon

Yeah, there are. Although that one is ridiculously expensive, i got mine for $25.00 at toysRus a few years back so i could play animal crossing with my friends (this was before DSi). If you search Ebay im sure you could get one, or even if you go searching around at best buy or walmart you might be able to get one.

u/23cricket · 1 pointr/pokemon

Buying some cards as a gift for a new Pokemon player - but I know zilch about Pokemon. I figured a Trainer Kit like this or this would be a good start. But I also want to add some additional cards so they can build upon this foundation.

What Battle or Theme Decks or other card bundle would build upon either of those trainer kits?

Thx

u/Gardevoir_LvX · 23 pointsr/pokemon

Yeah. My girlfriend encountered that problem. Yoshida's signature slightly smeared when she put it in her bag.

Nintendo 3DS XL Duraflexi Protector - Clear by HORI I protect my 3Ds XL and signatures with this, and I highly recommend it.

Alternatively, you can go to a hobby shop, and buy a mat clear coat finish for model painting.

u/wet_ninja · 1 pointr/pokemon

My daughter and I are getting 3DSes for Christmas and are looking to get into Pokémon. I think we're going to start with X&Y and move onto Sun and Moon later (though I could be convinced otherwise).

That said, now that we're three years past the release of X&Y, what books are recommended to pick up to help with the game? I know there's a lot of information online, but my daughter is too young to browse online, so a printed book would be good.

Should I get the Kalos Pokédex? Does that cover all the Pokémon in X&Y, or do I need to supplement with a national Pokédex or an earlier Pokédex (such as the one for B2W2)?

Should I get the guidebook, or is the Pokédex all we need?

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/pokemon

I had this one and this one

I honestly can't believe how much that first one is worth now o.O wish I would have taken better care of mine.

u/superboySR · 0 pointsr/pokemon

Ok I think I found you 2 legit cartridges judging by the comments on Amazon. They are both under $/£35 B-) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00028S9P8 - Leaf Green with free GBA adapter. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0006GBD04 - Leaf Green by itself. Hoped this helped :-D

u/Quazifuji · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Yep. Gamestop has a lot of sucky business practices, but I don't think this is one of them. They're selling the games for the price people will pay. You can get it cheaper on Amazon, but that would require buying it from random sellers you've probably never heard of.

Some games become dirt cheap when they get old, others become collector's items and don't. Not really surprising that an old Pokemon game is in the latter category, given both the popularity of the game and that there's still motivation to buy it (I don't think you're the only one trying to pick it up to help complete the Pokedex).

u/PrimativeJoe · 9 pointsr/pokemon

I ordered the carbon fiber version of this,

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008JHH748/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1373737251&sr=8-2&pi=SL75

I think it is the best accessory for a 3ds, it also has a lifetime replacement guarantee, the only downside is you must let it settle for a week before it is ready.

u/slusho55 · 14 pointsr/pokemon

I just found this, and I find it interesting, because we might be able to make estimates based on what the National Dex book has: 772 Pages.

Each page in that had 1-2 Pokémon on it, based on the Amazon pictures, I and I’m assuming it had mega evolutions too. So, I believe we’ll get at least 500 Pokémon, if not more, if we are getting around 61% of the Pokédex, which we know megas are gone, and the total number will probably go past 900.

Wanted to share this to see what others thought.

Here’s the Amazon link to the Galar Dex.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1604382058/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SEuDDbRVA0CNC

https://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Kalos-Region-Handbook-Scholastic/dp/0545646022/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=pokemon+handbook&qid=1573852603&sr=8-4

if reading (and bonding) is your goal, you can buy a "Pokemon Handbook" (basically a encyclopedia of pokemon, with their pictures and descriptions! I linked one). there are way more pokemon now than when i was a kid but as a kid i absolutely adored my copy, and read through it countless times. Most are sorted by "Region" of pokemon. An idea is that you can read it together, act out the moves, and go out to hunt for the pokemom cards of his favorites. Honestly as a kid I was vastly disapointed with the card game, as it had aso many rules, and what I really wanted to do was yknow, pretend to shoot fire and stuff.

u/uh_oh_hotdog · 2 pointsr/pokemon

Oh god, now I want the Charizard too...

But in all honesty, $60 is a bit steep. That's about the same price as the D-Arts Charizard figure.

u/treacledormouse · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Yes get one of the 'Pokémon Handbooks' (probably this)

Or this when it comes out, although it's more of a strategy guide.

Or you could just play around on the Pokédex section of the Pokémon website.

u/doomedcow · 2 pointsr/pokemon

I highly recommend this book for completing the pokedex. Volume one is good too, but if you have already beaten the game then you really are going to want to get the book linked. While I have not completed my 'dex yet, I am actively working on doing it, and this book gets into the gnat's ass about where to find each pokemon, its evolution etc. It also tells you what games the pokemon is available in (will help when knowing which ones you will have to trade).

Hope this helps.

u/SmashingEmeraldz · 1 pointr/pokemon

[Here you go] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019GE15PY?keywords=pokemon&qid=1454217507&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2)

How is the four pack compared to the original release? Would it be worth it to get this?

u/Coreus · 6 pointsr/pokemon

I bought this one. I know this information is available online, but sometimes you can't beat a corporeal book. [Inside looks like this.]

u/modernotter · 44 pointsr/pokemon

They have decks like these designed to learn the game:
https://www.amazon.com/Pokémon-TCG-Trainer-Lycanroc-Alolan/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=pokemon+cards+starter+kit&qid=1573834186&sprefix=polemon+cards+s&sr=8-4

It’ll have two 30 card decks instead of the full 60 card deck so it’s quicker and usually the cards are less complicated. It will also come with a paper board... no board is needed once you know the game better though.

u/popwert90 · 1 pointr/pokemon

awww, alright. The book has that as well.

u/jAquaD · 1 pointr/pokemon

Well, almost all Pokemon games have been on some kind of sale recently.

u/ShinyRaticate · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Idk how much you really want it, but this is what I use, works for DS, DSi, 3DS, and XL but its 20 bucks which isn't too bad really, but its up to you of course
http://www.amazon.com/Action-Replay-Nintendo-3DS-DSI-Lite/dp/B00A1AQJAO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1450220511&sr=8-3&keywords=3ds+action+replay+pokemon

u/junkytrunks · 1 pointr/pokemon

One of these?:
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-DS-Wi-Fi-USB-Connector/dp/B000MXMNG4

Gamestop (yeah, yeah, I know, I know) has them used sometimes.

Ask the kid at the counter. Usually they can check inventory at surrounding stores too. They are getting hard to find though.

u/NFHoward · 1 pointr/pokemon

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but what are your thoughts on the gold plated pokemon cards . I have all of these from when I was little and am thinking about getting rid of them soon. As a collector, do you think this is an item a collector would want for themselves? or are they too gimmicky?

u/LSStaf · 1 pointr/pokemon

Sadly, only used online. eBay, too. If you are really lucky, a used game store could carry one.

u/Deku-Miguel · 1 pointr/pokemon

I'm not sure on previous releases but for SWSH the guidebook is being released soon after the game, but the pokedex book isn't for another month. Although because of the pokedex situation there likely won't be a big national dex book, so I'd suggest getting the one for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon if you want a coffee table type book.

u/SaucyWench7787 · 5 pointsr/pokemon

Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon Trainer Kit Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu Card Game https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tuMEDbVSVK7F3

These right here. Those are 30 cards each and 10$.

u/TAFHUC · 1 pointr/pokemon

Amazon is offering £33 for OR and £31.99 for AS

u/Andrewsarchus · 1 pointr/pokemon

Use Action Replay for the DS/DSi. It's about $20 on Amazon.com. You can use the codes generated on PokéGen to get them onto Black2, then use PokéTransfer to get them into PokéBank.

I use this one.

u/EvChemical · 2 pointsr/pokemon

The books are already larger that "pocket size", the one for BW2 is under $20. HGSS is the same price, also.

u/tytotabuki · 5 pointsr/pokemon

With shipping Emerald is about $30. Fire red is about the same at $28

u/direbee · 2 pointsr/pokemon

Never mind, I think I've got it!

u/SEJIBAQUI · 1 pointr/pokemon

Nintendo DS systems are fishy about wireless networks. I'd suggest going over to /r/techsupport or a related subreddit, considering this is more about networking than pokemon. I don't know if they still exist, but there's a device called a Wireless USB adapter or something. You plug it into a USB port and it connects to the internet through your computer.

u/Holly164 · 11 pointsr/pokemon

MY CONSTANT NEED FOR ALL THINGS POKEMON HAS MADE MY WALLET CRY THIS MONTH.

ANYWAY, BACK ON TOPIC... I NEVER EXPERIENCED POKEMON LIKE THAT BECAUSE I HAD THE POKEMON HANDBOOK. IT WOULD BE PRETTY COOL TO GO IN BLIND, BUT I WORRY I'D END UP REGRETTING MY TEAM CHOICES. AND YEAH, THE WANTING ALL THE INFORMATION NOW THING AS WELL. SO I'LL PROBABLY NEVER EXPERIENCE THAT.

u/Nealon01 · 2 pointsr/pokemon

My girlfriend didn't know who the fuck Charizard was. She got this for Christmas that year.

u/Coal_Morgan · 7 pointsr/pokemon

Galar Pokedex Guide

Page count in that book is 448. Traditionally there has been a page a Pokemon in the Pokedex books. With 20-30 pages of fluff.

They could change but I doubt it. I think we'll get slightly north of 400 Pokemon given that book.

We have 807 right now, if they add 125 new ones which is in the mid range for all generations but high for the last few that's 932 but I also consider Megas to be Pokemon 48. so that's 980 Pokemon. There are also 18 Alolan forms so that's 998 apx.

So we're probably losing 500 to 600 Pokemon individually stat'd Pokemon.

If you count Unown and Vivillon and other such things by form then significantly more since Pokemon with a lot of forms will be main targets to eliminate.

It'll be the largest Regional dex but be the smallest amount of Pokemon since Gen 3 I think.

u/ForwardReception · 7 pointsr/pokemon

Holy shit I had this too. Don't worry, you're not going crazy.

I got it at a toy store over a decade ago. I had Charizard, Blastoise, Blaziken, Sceptile, Swampert, and a sixth I can't remember (I wanna say it was Electric-type) Typhlosion.

I'm going on a very deep search now to find this. I'll edit if I find anything.

Edit: I found this, but this isn't the same as the one I had. It's very similar, though.

Edit 2: I FOUND IT. HOLY SHIT YEAH.

u/Fastsalmon · 3 pointsr/pokemon

I can confirm that it still works and that the code is sent to you within 2 minutes. I'm from the Netherlands BTW.

I first made a fake account using hotmail (this isn't necessary btw, it is just precaution).

Then I went to this page on Amazon to purchase Omega Ruby.

I filled in the necessary information. WATCH OUT! You need to fill in a legit UK-Address and phone-number. Just think of a fake phone-number and find a UK-Address on Google Maps or something like that.

Then go to this website to create a fake Creditcardnumber. Just fill in a fake name and use VISA as the company.

Then purchase the order, wait for you e-mail and then cancel the order as soon as possible!

There you go! ORAS-Demo for everyone in Europe!

EDIT:
I found out that you can get 2 ORAS-demo codes if you pre-order both Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire separate from each other. So get 1 for yourself and give the other away! :D
