It might be worth starting on wiki books (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Prolog). I'd recommend Swi Prolog as the engine/compiler - it's what I was taught Prolog on at Uni.
If you can afford it, track down a used copy of Bratko's book on Prolog, too. Here it is on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Artificial-Intelligence-International-Computer/dp/0321417461
