Yes, mixing is the most important thing regarding a final result, but really I think your tracks could be sounding even better with some masterchain processing. There is a book by David S Eley, that I've read recently, and from all the stuff I've read recently it may be the best. Actually, the first half of the book is avalable online for free, but there are really some advanced techniques you can read about in the other half. Writer of the book is very well aware of electronic music also, so it he gives good tips in the context.

How I understood it is that careful minimal appliance of EQ, some saturation/exiting and (parallel) compression on master chain gives a final gel and helps "putting it all together", as well as giving it a little boost in loudness without loosing too much of dynamics. All of that should be used in the context of mid/side data, so stereo image is not ruined. Also, making it sound good in mono is pretty tough task (maybe the toughest one), but there are some plugins that can help solve such problems easily.

Just tell me, are you using sidechain compression/eq on individual channels to help emphasize some elements?
