It's a moving mouth puppet, also know as a mouth puppet, the same basic mechanism as most Muppets.

I doubt you're going to find specifically a "How to make a moving mouth fish puppet" tutorial, but really all you need to do is make a standard mouth puppet (which there are tutorials for) and build out the back of the head into a tail.

James Wojital recently made a fish puppet like this for his niece and photographed a few steps of the process.

The fleece pattern

Most puppets of this kind have a foam "skull" and use foam or polyfill to build out the body. This is then covered by fabric, normally some kind of fleece.

There are a few patterns for creating mouth puppets here.

Here's one tutorial on youtube, broken into several videos it details most of the process of creating a mouth puppet.

If you've got some time and a small amount of money on your hands, I highly suggest The Foam Book a great resource for building with foam. You can also purchase a great puppet pattern from Project Puppet.

If this is all overwhelming you and you want something really simple and cheap, just get a colorful sock, add ping pong balls for eyes and fabric for fins and you're there. You can make the mouth perform better by wrapping a rubber band around it.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

I can tell you how my setup was done. Granted I had already been using equipment to work on indie projects, so take that into consideration.

For a Filming setup:

  • A professional video tripod (mine is a manfrotto but you don't have to get something that expensive, This will fill the role.

  • Either a Camera Boom arm or a Adjustable height Table to get the camera up to the needed Height for standing shots.

  • A mirrorless DSLR that has a mic input and HDMI output, so you can output your camera feed to the ground monitor, and a capture card later if you want to shoot uncompressed. (reason for mirrorless is that less expensive mirrored DSLR's usually have a timeout function for what's called "Live view" and that can cause issues, and Prosumer Camcorders can cost as much as a decent Mirrorless and not be as versatile.

  • 1080p Monitor that you can adjust or lay on something to show you the image from the camera.

  • A separate portable audio recorder (I have a Zoom H5) that accepts XLR input and can output to the camera. Also a Line-to-Mic Attenuator Cable to drop the output from the recorder to acceptable levels. (This gives you the ability to record ambient sounds separately, give you a audio scratch track on the camera recording to sync to, and allows you to record using a standard XLR mic in/out)

  • Heavy-duty sweatband to attach a plastic or metal piece to attach a Lav mic to

  • Wireless Lavalier mic system. This allows you to mount the mic on your head above your mouth (as the Henson Puppeteers and others have done) to give that projection needed for the voice to work. You could also use a Shotgun Microphone, given a quiet enough environment and a Boom mount.

  • Lights! You'll want to stick with LED panels, 5600k color temp probably, as you'll need to light your scene evenly, softboxes for the lights will help. You can get 3 high-output lights with stands for WAY cheaper than they were years ago.

This is primarily for a reasonable setup, if you're doing any Greenscreen work, you'll need to adjust your lighting priorities and other things.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

If all of these items were bought new, given the inexpensive decent options out there now, I'd say a budget of $1300.00 would seal the deal.

I've been thinking of having my puppet do some vlogs, and I was looking at something like this: https://www.amazon.com/STUNTMAN-360-Shoulder-Harness-Cameras/dp/B01LW4EHCW/

I've got a hand + rod puppet, so I can't even use my free hand for the camera. And I thought a chest harness might be a bit low-down. Depends what kind of camera you're using too, I guess.

I've been thinking about doing something similar with one of my puppets being a YouTube vlogger. I've been eyeing this selfie stick/tripod on Amazon with either a phone or a GoPro mounted on it.

I'm also looking into how I could mount some kind of flex or articulated arm like these below to my forearm so that I can get it to look like he's holding the camera but I haven't found any way to brace it to my forearm yet
