Book recs: the book "Queen" by Sutcliff is very comprehensive and is full of some amazing photographs. Some of the writing style is a bit stilted but it's a fantastic jumping off point and covers the beginning, middle, and end of their reign while also talking about the members' personal lives. Album reviews too!

The book "Mercury" by Leslie-Ann Jones is really great. It's a biography of just Freddie, from birth to death. But it also includes information about the band members (how could it not?). It's a better written book than the aforementioned one, although it may be a little too specific for your tastes.

Concert: Live Aid is, as elderpo23 rightly points out, considered the greatest performance of any band ever. You really can not go wrong here. For a more feature length performance I also really recommend their Montreal concert. Luckily BOTH Montreal and Live Aid are available on on disc! http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Rock-Montreal-Live-Blu-ray/dp/B000W00Y0Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370281675&sr=8-2&keywords=queen+rock+montreal

The blu ray transfer is absolutely incredible. It's not as high quality as a movie, but considering that this was shot in a dark amphitheater in 1981 your jaw will be on the floor. The 2 concert combo is also available on dvd if you prefer.

Last word on the concert, it's available on netflix if you don't want to buy the dvd/blu ray: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Queen_Rock_Montreal/70081502?trkid=2361637

If you want a concert from later in their career and featuring a more all encompassing sample of their catalog, the Live in Budapest concert is also pretty incredible. Just came out on blu/dvd, but I haven't picked it up yet so no personal guarantee on quality.

You didn't ask for it, but "Days of Our Lives" is a fantastic documentary on the band. I saw it on tv a while back, and sadly it is not on netflix, but it is for sale on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Days-Our-Lives-Blu-ray/dp/B006GH6IS4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370281889&sr=8-2&keywords=the+days+of+our+lives+queen

It's also on youtube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbMvkf6NJRY

CDs: I'm not sure if you want a compilation or what, but literally every one of their studio albums is fantastic. Queen I, Queen II, and The Miracle tend to be a bit divisive/harder for new fans to get into, but really Queen fans tend to love just about every single track they produced, so go crazy!

If you aren't ready to put money down on a CD, I recommend browsing youtube and cross-referencing with their discography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_discography. 99.95% of their music is on youtube at this point. The sound quality is kind of shit, but it's a good way to hear the songs for free. Once you figure oout which songs are your favorite then you can go out and buy the CDs, Records, and/or high quality music downloads on iTunes.

Welcome to the family :)

Well if your friend likes Queen and guitar and I'm sure he/she is a big Brian fan. Here are some budget ideas.

This is a cool Jazz-themed sixpence that Brian would use as a guitar pick. $10

This is a cute Brian funko pop figurine.

Good luck!

I got a piano book on Amazon that has the piano music as it appears on the albums: Queen: Note-for-Note Keyboard Transcriptions https://www.amazon.com/dp/1495010260/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NYGUCb3J5DRDC

Both songs are there. I’ve discovered that Freddie really loved quarter notes and and writing songs in the key of E-flat major.

Also Love of My Life is fun to play.

Queen sells it on their website so I’m guessing it’s sanctioned in some way.

I agree that Peter Freestone's book is very good.

But I think my favorite is Freddie Mercury: A Life, In His Own Words. A previous edition was released way back in 2006 (?) I think, but it's just being re-released today. This book is entirely Freddie's own words, so you're not getting someone else's biased view of who he was. I love this book.

I LOVE "Queen Unseen", by Peter "Ratty" Hince. Great stories, but not "tabloid-y". He was a roadie for Queen for years.

It’s actually found in a book that is pretty cool. And it’s on sale for Kindle for $10.

This is in the [Queen](Queen in 3D Slipcased Edition (3-D Stereoscopic Book) https://www.amazon.com/dp/095742468X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YfYUCbMDBFGF4) in 3-D book he put out recently- note the 3 lens camera. It takes 2 slightly different perspective images and you view them with special glasses. It's a really cool book.

I really liked the one written by his personal assistant, Peter Freestone.

This?

Brian May worked on it and released it shortly after that tour.

She's so lucky to have you as a dad.

I hope they do one more tour with Adam Lambert.

Ah, he passed away earlier this year. RIP Gerry.

Has anyone read his book "Queen on the Road"? I've not been able to find a copy:

I also have this book, a bit older but doesn't focus on Freddie's sexuality as much as the first book I posted.

They're all great. I'd say Live at Wembley because it's the band in their prime, and it's a hell of a show. But On Fire at the Bowl is great, and so is Rock Montreal. And I actually really like Return of the Champions, with Paul Rodgers. Secondary to those (but still freakin' incredible) would have to be We Will Rock You, and the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

It's hard to pick just one, but if I absolutely had to -- gun to my head -- I'd say Wembley.
