I can't believe no one has said this one yet:

Off to Be the Wizard

Description:

>
Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.

>What could possibly go wrong?

>An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.

It was a great read and there are two more books after (with the next in production now). The sequels are not as good as the first but I still enjoyed them very much. :)

Check out “the Impossible Fortress” by Jason Rekulak.

It’s not set in any sort of sci-fi universe or video game like RPO or Armada, but it’s chalk full of 80’s Pop Culture and video game design.

It’s really good and I highly recommend it.

> The movie had zero impact. It was a meaningless CG fest.

I doubt that RPO the novel had "societal impact" other than people becoming fans. In contrast, a serious novel like Atlas Shrugged had societal impact. Ready Player One only has entertainment value; it's not a philosophical work.

If a Ready Player One movie were to have societal impact - a movie with philosophical content - it probably would have ended up being a box office bomb. Not everything can be Blade Runner 2049, which is one of the greatest movies of all time but was also a bomb relative to its huge budget.

just republished today I had tremendous crossover support from RPO fans
