I'm using a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33mm on my Mini-30, using it for deer hunting in woods/hills (50-100 yard shots at most).
I've only had it one season but it has netted me a deer so far and has been enjoyable to use.
Pros: clear, good low-light, not overpowered (2x is good for close shots, 7x is about the reach of the mini-30)
Cons: Have to really double down on the lock-tight, mount came loose causing me to completely miss my second deer.
If I could Trade: Not really, at least none come to mind. I have a 3x-9x on my .270 and I think it's under-powered for that gun, but for my mini-30 the 2x-7x is comfortable.
I used the Wheeler scope mounting kit for mine, overkill if you are just doing one (local gunshop would be happy to do it) but useful for me as I have several guns and I have a bunch of family and friends who have used it, after your second scope mounting it really pays for itself.
Ha ha yep those factory sights were pretty disappointing.... I got these:
https://www.amazon.com/Meprolight-Ruger-Tru-Dot-Night-Adjustable/dp/B00488IYPI
Literally the only choice I found for night sights, which is surprising considering how popular the gp100 is. They are awesome once installed- but you will have to grind/ sand them down to get them to fit. It wasn't too bad of a job with a dremel but for the money you wouldn't expect to have to do that. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.
Pictured
On the left is my first long gun, a Ruger American Rimfire model 8301. It has a Simmons 3-9x32 scope on an Evolution Scope Base. It currently has no other mods. I've considered dropping in the Timoney trigger, but I feel like this firearm is AOK in the current configuration. This was the second time I have fired the RAR with the scope on it. The first time was about a week ago where I shot it off of bags to get it zeroed in. Today, I shot standing/unsupported. That was a challenge. I loaded 5 rounds at a time. I learned that doing an upper body workout a few hours before going to the range can make a light firearm feel really heavy. I think I'm going to try using the higher comb cheek riser to see if I can get a more consistent cheek weld without having to contort my neck so much. My focus this range visit was shooting with both eyes open, and getting as consistent groups as I could. I fired 50 rounds of CCI Blazer. Now it makes sense to me why people shoot prone, use a monopod, or a bipod. Shooting off hand made me realize how much I move when firing. It was a great training experience that will carry over to how I shoot my other firearms.
On the right is my most recent long gun (I picked it up yesterday), a bone stock Ruger PC Carbine model 19101 (non-treaded barrel with 10 round magazine version). This was my first range visit with the PC Carbine. I was extremely excited to get some range time with this one. Prior to this, I had only fired: .22LR, 12 gauge, and .223 from long guns. The .223 was when I took a rifle course at Sig Sauer Academy (loaner MCX).
First Impressions of the PC Carbine
To me, it had all the fun of shooting a 10/22 with a bigger boom.
I was skeptical about trying to use ghost ring sights. I have horrible eye sight, and could not get a sight picture with Tech Sights on a 10/22 to save my life. However, these were really easy to use. I'm going to wait a while before trying it with a red dot sight.
Recoil was fine. It is a 9mm, so it was not bad by any stretch.
Trigger feels pretty good to me as far as break and pressure. If an aftermarket company releases a metal trigger (the actual trigger component), I'd strongly consider adding that.
The only thing that felt a bit odd was the magazine release. I'm going to add the Taccom one.
The surprising thing to me was that it would fit in a cheapie bag that I picked up for my shotgun. So, I'm not planning on picking up a specific bag for this firearm anytime soon.
I'm on the fence about magazines for this thing. Pmags for Glocks are pretty cost efficient compared to the cost of the Ruger SR9 mags. So, I have some research to do.
Eventually, I'll throw a picture of my three Rugers up on here.
Not pictured is my Ruger 10/22 Sporter model 1102. I have made some tweaks to it. So far, it has the Ruger BX Trigger, Volquartsen auto-bolt release, extractor, and then I just got in the Surestrike firing pin and bolt handle. It has the same scope that I put on the American Rimfire but on a Monstrum rail. I still need to zero in the scope for this one.

The hammer lock is in the sear; but it also engages the indexing pawl and the cylinder latch - and both of these are exposed when you are doing this work. I would suggest you start there and work your way inward. If I were a betting man, I would place my money on the cylinder latch spring being slightly out of alignment (probably not seating all the way down) with the cylinder latch and not allowing lock-up to occur, although the pawl has much the same effect, and is potentially damaged easily while reassembling the pistol. Another potential problem is if the base pin isn't fully engaged, the mechanism won't work correctly either. This is the easiest to fix (just try to seat the base pin further into the revolver) so try it first. The stronger Base Pin Latch spring can make it a little tougher to seat the base pin correctly; but once it's seated it's locked!
If you don't have a copy of [Ruger Single Action Revolvers Blackhawk, Vaquero, and Bisley Disassembly & Reassembly Gun-guide (Disassembly & Reassembly Guide)]
(http://www.amazon.com/Revolvers-Blackhawk-Disassembly-Reassembly-Gun-guide/dp/B000MXSON0/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1415304577&sr=8-9&keywords=ruger+single+action+revolver) it's worth every penny of the $7 it costs from Amazon.
Good luck, and let me know if you get it figured out!
I have a glock 23 and an lcp, and I carry my lcp a whole lot more because of how convenient it is. Your main complaint is the same as mine, I wish it locked open. It may make it more difficult to pocket carry, but I highly suggest getting these for your magazines. I got then and they made a massive difference in my accuracy and speed. I shot my first IDPA tournament with my lcp and while I didn't blow anyone away, my friends and I were surprised how well it performed. I also put a bit of white out on the front post to make it stand out a little more, since I can't just change it out like my glock.

It's Weigand mount. https://www.amazon.com/Weigand-Gp-100-Barrel-Revolvers-Silver/dp/B003LT673G
It was incredibly easy to install, and works perfectly. I don't have a holster that it fits, and didn't like that. I honestly prefer shooting with open sights to the red dot, but I should have out the dot back on for hunting season. I'm hoping to have a carry sized 357 soon with groove or fixed sights, and at that point I'll shoot that one for fun, and try to get some distance out of this one.
You can spend a lot less for basically the same thing. I have a few of those inexpensive bags and they do just fine for a range bag. If you want something a bit larger to carry all your gear look at one like this. I have two of those and they hold up great.
I put a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40 on my 270 American and have been very happy with it. I'm in SC and don't plan to take shots longer than 200 yards or so. The whole package for scope, rings, and rifle came out to right at $500.

Edit: I am working on hand loads so don't have an ammo recommendation.
I do, it's large, (I don't know how to shorten links): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S7W3GDQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ra7WCb7Z3PDS0
I use the belt loop 'holster': https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000056BMW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Uc7WCb78VNMA6
Bulky, but an effective light, and a solid alternative for personal defense if the pew pew is not the appropriate choice.
Amazon actually, here's the link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TE9IJ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_
Second best thing I bought for it, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MRAPIGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_6IsEwbKF0QXXQ
I found it on amazon. I wear it everyday I'm working and I've been happy with it.

I carry my LCP in this every day.
Slim, light, convenient, covers the trigger. I keep it tucked in my waistband at 3:30-4 o'clock. Doesn't budge at all throughout the day. But if your method works for you, great.
The one on my daughters (red/left) is what I'd call an entry-level sight. It is a FieldSport red/green reflex. The one on her buddy's (blue/right) is a C-MORE Systems Railway (not sure which one, exactly). It is definitely not entry-level :-)
I'm a gun newb an there might be better options but I've been happy using this for my first two months of gun ownership.

I have a simple two point Allen sling and it does the job just fine.
https://www.amazon.com/Allen-Company-Slide-Black-Swivels/dp/B001F0NTSE
I'm just using the factory forend though because for some stupid reason, we can't get any of the handguards up in Canada yet. It looks like you're going to need an M-Lok sling mount to fit your handguard.
You can pick up a sight-through scope mount.
https://www.amazon.com/MSP-Ruger-See-Through-Scope-Mount/dp/B003JHQO6A
https://www.amazon.com/Bianchi-Black-Widow-Hip-Holster/dp/B0051F4YCO
It's a regular owb holster with thumb strap if that's really all you need.
They're mounted in the dovetail.
Bushnell TRS-25. It's running a little high now but I've gotten them as low as $50.
