I've been using a pair of BlueAnt Pump bluetooth earbuds for the last couple of weeks. They're only about $33 on Amazon. So far, the fit seems very stable; they don't fall out of my ears while I'm running, and I haven't even messed with the included stabilizers. They have a pretty good range; the audio doesn't start cutting out till I'm about 25 feet from my phone (at least when the battery's fresh...) They're waterproof and supposed to have 8 hours of play time and 2 weeks of standby (assuming you remember to turn them off after your run -- otherwise it counts towards your 8 hours of playtime). I'm very impressed with them, particularly given the relatively low price :)

Oh wow, I imagine that's hard. Week 8 seems does this weird varied intensity thing that looks like, well, like "real" running. I just started Week 7 and I've pretty much decided that I'm not even going to attempt Week 8 until I can run all the free-forms. (This may be an excuse to stall since Week 8 scares me!)

Editing to say, don't be embarrassed about the chafing. That's actually a really common problem, so much so that running stores carry things like anti-chafing gel and nipple protectors.

Also, congratulations on the weight loss. That's awesome!

I had a rough time with shin splints for much of the first half of my training. Several recommendations. First, disclaimer, I'm not a PT, OT, Osteopath, MD, etc... Talk to a professional to determine the exact cause of your pain (what we call "shin splints" can be any of about 3 different conditions of varying severity).

That said, this is a really helpful article on Medial Tibial stress syndrome, which sounds similar to what you are describing.

Once you're sure you're dealing with this and not the muscle sack rupturing (ewww), there are a few things that I did that were a big help. This article (also available in the sidebar under stretching & strengthening) and this give you good exercises to help strengthen your legs and prevent shin splints.

KT tape can be used for all kinds of injuries, the link is specifically for shin splints. I was finding myself unable to complete runs because of my shin pain and running with KT tape literally stopped my shins hurting on runs -- amazing!

I also bought a compression sleeve and wore it after I iced after my runs. Highly recommend.

I always ice my shins & knees when after running to help with any soreness and swelling. In my experience I have less soreness and stiffness that day and the next when I ice. Your mileage may vary.

Good luck, fellow runner!

Make sure you hydrate before your run. Consider investing in a hydration pack. The one I use is something like this. It will take a while for your body to acclimate to the heat, so take your first few runs nice and slow.

Depending on your knee issues maybe a knee brace may help. My knee injury was running related, and I now run with a knee strap. Sometimes just fixing your running form may alleviate some pain on the knee. But check with your doctor on what's best for your knee issue.

I'm 41/m and started my 5K training at 239 lbs I have since lost 10 lbs and still losing. Sure, shin splints stuck with me until week 4 or 5. But magically, they disappeared, and have been pain free ever since.

You can do it. Keep reading this sub for inspiration. Doc Myers and Sam Yao are very good at keeping your spirits high during the run. Report your progress (or lack thereof) here in this sub because we are a supportive collection of people from all walks of life.

Welcome, Runner 5. And I look forward to seeing you at the finish line.

I've got one of those Road IDs - they're pretty awesome. I have the slim version, and I wear it all the time. It's fairly inexpensive and I never have to worry about carrying an ID. I would wholeheartedly recommend getting one.
I also have a little Nathan Runner 5k Waist Pouch which I love. I put my phone in there and don't have to carry it around. When I've got a little cash, I'll grab one of these little hydration thingies.
I don't worry about my house key, my partner is always home when I go on a run. Running's not his thing. :)

Also, consider getting a foam roller and watching a youtube video on how to use it. They hurt to use, but they are like free deep tissue massages you can give yourself. This will often help your muscles recover -- assuming that's the issue. I agree with the other posters in here -- if you feel a weird pain and can't push through it, check with a doctor.
