With respect, I think perhaps you have unrealistic expectations from your phone and situation. I will explain by answering some of your specific questions/points:

> I keep my phone in my bag like many women.

Please note that, by doing this, you are blinding yourself when it comes to the contents of your bag. This is not a criticism; it is an observation that I hope we can agree is accurate: when you grab something in a bag without opening the bag, you cannot see it, which means you risk touching something you may want to avoid.

> My phone rings, I go to grab it, in doing so my finger touches the phone screen and rejects the call. What is going on with this terrible design???

This can happen when grabbing something you can't see. This is not a terrible design; it was designed with a touchscreen that you can, well, touch to perform tasks. You are accidentally performing a task the phone was designed to allow: reject a call with a small swipe. You are doing this because you are not taking precautions to avoid doing so. The phone was designed to be used by people who can see it. Your choice to not look at what you touch is outside the scope of their design.

> How am I supposed to do this?

You have three options:

  1. Look before you grab. If you cannot or will not do this, consider an alternative solution since the current one clearly isn't working. Speaking of alternative solutions:
  2. Buy a special case that covers the screen. There are many options for this; some of them quite stylish or functional. Samsung makes a smart cover that can display information, and there are many wallet cases on the market that will hold your phone as well as cards, coins, or whatever else while also protecting the display from accidental touches.
  3. Buy a bag/purse that has a pocket or slot that holds your phone reliably in the same position, and ensure that you always insert your phone in the same way. My wife has a sling-style purse that supports this. There are literally hundreds/thousands of bags that offer pockets designed for phones, including many purses, backpacks, duffel bags, etc.
  4. Consider purchasing a Bluetooth headset that will allow you to answer your phone without touching it. I recommend the Plantronics Voyager Legend or Voyager 5200.

Any of the above solutions will solve your current problem. It is up to you whether or not the cost of a new case/device/bag is worth the hassle you've faced thus far.

    > Its even worse if I go for one of those ones with the screen wrapped around the edge. Don't they understand that we actually need to pick up and hold these things with our hand??

Yes, they do. And, to be blunt, the phone can be held in one's hand without accidentally touching the screen if you are cautious. If you want more of a gap, buy a case. There are many cases that are classy and high quality, made of materials like leather, hardwood, or other fine materials other than plastic. Samsung knows that many, many people put cases on their phone because they don't want to risk damaging a $700-$1,500 device. Many of these cases are slim, and some cover the screen as described above. For those who don't wish to do use a case, they take care when handling their phone. You may need to re-learn how to hold it. This is something many of us have had to do when buying a new phone: we sometimes have to learn new ways to interact. This can include, when the edge style changes, how to hold it.

    > Why is it that when a call comes through, it has no form of protection from accidental screen interaction, because the grand majority of people will have their phone in their pocket or a bag.

Because most people pay closer attention to their placement of the phone than you have chosen to do so far. In a pocket, it goes in one way and gets pulled out in one way, which means you can control what parts of the phone you touch. You may of course continue to grab your phone without looking, but please understand that most people choose to take a more proactive approach. Your choice does not match most people's when it comes to this. In fact, you are the first person I've heard of who has chosen against using any of the solutions I mentioned above. You can resolve this simply by putting your phone in a pocket or slot in your bag and the problem will go away.

    > This just screams of atrocious product design.

With respect, the design is fine. They simply didn't design it for people who don't look at what they grab when they know it has a touchscreen. It is impossible to design something that matches the use-case for every customer's unique situation, so they went with the most common: that people will look at what they grab or that they will take minimal precautions to avoid touching something they don't want to touch.

    > The main reason I choose Samsung is because of gorilla glass that allows me to bypass a phone case and save money and tacky design.

Again, with respect, Gorilla Glass only makes it harder to break, not impossible. If you drop it on a hard enough surface (such as cement), it will still crack. It is possible that you may be expecting more strength than is realistic from your device. In addition, you are going to find (if you look closely) that microscratches are probably beginning to form on both the front and back of your device. Gorilla Glass isn't proof against damage; it's simply a protective measure designed to extend the useful life of your device. If you want to avoid damage, buy a case. If you don't want to buy a case, recognize that damage is not only likely; it is inevitable, one way or another.

    > Do Samsung even do any testing of their products whatsoever? Do they even understand the basic functions of the device they are making??

Of course they do. Your expectations do not match those of most consumers, and therefore Samsung has not designed a phone that supports those expectations.

    > What do people do? Is everyone just using a case even though it really ought not be necessary because of how tough the device is?

Yes, most people use a case if they face issues like yours. No, it is not reasonable to characterize a case as "ought not to be necessary" because this varies wildly depending on the situation. People drop their phones. People carry sharp objects in their bags. People, because of these factors, plan ahead. It is possible that you may wish to consider doing so as well. This is not a criticism; merely an observation. I hope my recommendations are helpful.

My go to products are from Spigen. I have been using this screen protector since the phone was launched and it still looks amazing. It's $8.99 right now for a 2pack.
