I suggest buying online. The sets are better priced and more durable for your kid. I used to teach chess for k-12. 5 is a good age to start just having fun with chess. Don't push it too hard or he'll just end up disliking chess (I saw a lot of parents push too hard and their kids got burnt out by 9).
There is a good chess club here in SA but I think it meets a bit too late for your kid, plus it is a bunch of old men and college guys.

If you have a little cash, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a couple rolls of this rug/carpet stuff. Looks kinda like what you might have by the pedals in your car, except black and rubber on bottom. Really cheap. I think in the flooring area, but forget where exactly we got them.

Have you bought a pre-amp. A lot of the old recievers had amps installed for turntables, but the new ones do not. If you can barley hear it, you should get one, it was the issue w/ mine, and now it works perfectly.

I love hammocks! I use a cheap, $20 single person hammock I ordered off Amazon with some tree slings. It came with 'S' hooks, so I just replaced those with some heavy duty carabiner. It's held up just as well as my dad's $80 hammock. For mosquitoes, I use a cheap mosquito net. It doesn't work as well as his expensive mosquito cover, but his complaint is it gets too hot under it.
This bluetooth OBD2 tool for $22 will save you time.
Plus you can use it for all kinda of other neat shit, depending on what app you pair it with.
To follow up on this, if you don't want to go into caves but still want to experience the fright and thrill of them, read this book.
It's fantastic and scary and also makes you sit back and make you think.
